SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Monday night's Demi Lovato concert gave San Diego — and Parkland, Fla. — fans a night to remember.Kicking off her "Tell Me You Love Me" world tour, Lovato brought six Parkland shooting survivors on stage before a packed Viejas Arena."Tonight I brought along some people who are incredibly courageous and inspiring and brave. On February 14, one of the worst mass shootings in American history took place," Lovato said?on stage. "These students were in the school that day. Please welcome them to the stage."The Marjory Stoneman Douglas High students who survived the mass shooting then walked on stage to applause from 7,000 concertgoers packing the arena."These are the brave survivors who are working with us to heal their community," Lovato added. The Florida students, Julius Castillo, Mackenzie Marie Chapman, Samantha Megan Deitsch, Maia Hebron, Eden Hebron and Sarah Stricker, were flown to San Diego via private jet by Lovato, according to People Magazine.RELATED: 'Big Bang Theory' star Kaley Cuoco adopts pets from San Diego shelterLovato later said it was "an honor" to host the students, in a statement to People:"Tonight was our first night of the tour and it was incredibly special. I was able to bring out and meet a few of the students that had to experience the shooting in Florida on the 14th. It was such an honor to meet them and hear their courageous stories. I want to make sure their voices are being heard and we can provide them with the mental health and post-trauma care they need." 1590

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Neighbors are expressing their collective frustration after a vandal tagged a new community mural in South Park."Pretty awful and disrespectful. A lot of time, energy and love into this piece," said Heather Johnson. At 30th and Juniper Street and 30th Street, the community mural sponsored by several neighborhood businesses was targeted by a vandal over the weekend."I think it's disgusting to be honest with you," said Brian Padgett. The phrase "#Neighborhood" was spray-painted over, replaced with the phrase "ETHNIC CLEANSING." At the bottom of the mural, the phrase "#Hipster Pacifism" was tagged in purple."Disheartening, frustrating and an act of cowardice," added Ezekiel Morphis.Neighbors believe the spray-painted messages are sounding off against the gentrification of South Park. The tagged wall is a part of a building which will soon be home to a non-profit restaurant benefiting local schools. It was once home to long-time coffeehouse priced out of the area almost two years ago."It happens in every neighborhood. As a city grows, there is change. This is not the way to handle it," said Johnson. Some paint was quickly put on the tagging, but the creators of the mural — which cost about ,000 — say it may cost another ,000 to repair. Those sponsors tell 10News they're heartened by the response from the neighbors, who have offered their support and help in repairing the mural. 1424

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Padres fans, long wired to protect themselves from seemingly inevitable heartbreak, are expressing optimism as a team that made the playoffs last season gets bolstered by a series of blockbuster trades.“Just having the opportunity to think about padres baseball in 2021 as one of the perennial teams that everyone is looking at, it’s new territory for all of us," said Padres fan Andy Bolin. “It made me feel special again to have friends across the country saying hey man, those Padres are great. We’re having so much fun watching them. It’s nice to be able to brag for once," said fellow fan Mike Hernandez. In 2020, Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado each were among the top contenders for the MVP award and pitcher Dinelson Lamet was in the running for the CY Young Award as the best pitcher in the National League. While the team ultimately was eliminated in the playoffs by the eventual World Series champion, the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Padres have become a popular pick by baseball experts as the top candidate to knock the Dodgers off their thrown. And that was before the Padres reported acquisitions of ace pitchers Blake Snell and Yu Darvish."I really felt it was the best looking ball club that I’ve seen in my last 40 years, to be honest with you," Padres legend Randy Jones told ABC 10News about the 2020 team. Jones says he hopes the pandemic wanes enough for San Diego sports fans to return to the stadium at some point during the season. “It is fun to watch, and to see it in person down at Petco Park would be phenomenal for this fans. They’d just love it. They’d go nuts.” 1621

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Mostra Coffee, the San Diego-based coffee company that recently won the award for Best Roaster in the U.S., has opened its second brick-and-mortar store. The move is a risk, as many small businesses had to close or scale back during the coronavirus pandemic."Being an entrepreneur, it's just something that you pretty much fight for, and you are you're kind of programmed to just take a leap off the cliff even though you don't know what's happening," said Jelynn Malone, one of Mostra's co-owners.The new location is in 4S Ranch, an area of town that asked Mostra to move in. A petition in 2019 calling for the new location got more than 1,500 signatures."It was something that the community rallied for, and we felt that the community deserved it," said Malone. "So we just piecemeal this thing and slowly worked our way through to the point where we can actually open."But Malone admits it was scary taking that kind of risk during the Pandemic."Being a small business with over 20 employees, including my own family, it was very troubling and scary," she said. The company went through layoffs in the spring, and work on the new location slowed to a crawl. To keep the business going, Mostra built a website and app to allow for curbside pick-up and online ordering. Now that the new 4S Ranch location is open, Malone and her co-owners say the struggle has made their success more enjoyable."I'm so happy we made this decision, and I'm so happy with how the shop turned out. Everybody seems to love it so far." 1538

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One Comic-Con tradition for many has been donating blood every year through the San Diego Blood Bank. While the convention isn't happening in person, locals can still participate in the yearly blood drive and score some SDCC swag while they're at it.San Diego Blood Bank is extending its annual Robert A. Heinlein Blood Drive until Aug. 18 at any blood bank center or mobile donation drive. Donors will also receive a limited-edition Marvel Black Widow t-shirt while supplies last — a traditional reward for donors every Comic-Con.For the last 43 years, the blood bank says the drive has seen more than 25,000 pints of blood donated, impacting more than 75,000 lives. The drive is even more important this year as the blood bank faces a shortage amid the pandemic. Last month, the center said it's experiencing a critically low blood supply and all blood types are needed. Summer is usually a challenging time, according to the blood bank, strained even more without schools being open, businesses hosting drives, and as local hospitals continue surgeries delayed due to the pandemic. The blood bank is also testing all blood donations for coronavirus antibodies through the end of July. To be eligible to donate blood, you must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 114 pounds, and be in generally good health. Appointments must be made through the blood bank here. 1393
