(KGTV) -- A local business and organization are coming together to take steps toward better protecting Alzheimer patients by providing free gun locks.Alzheimer’s San Diego and Poway Weapons and Gear have started the first of its kind program regarding what to do when it’s time to lock up your guns.Eugenia Welch is the President of Alzheimer’s San Diego and spoke to 10News. "As we were working further through this program, there was an incident locally, a gentleman shot his daughter because he didn’t recognize her as a daughter he thought she was an intruder. Luckily she’s fine but that could have been a really bad situation," she said. When families are helping their loved ones who have been diagnosed, they often forget about the guns in the home and how dangerous they could be. "If someone is retired military or retired police officer, they’ve probably had guns in their home their whole life and didn’t even think about it” Welch says.This program gives free gun locks to families. It started over the summer and so far they have given out 100 locks.Poway Weapons and Gear has donated 500 locks and tells 10News they will continue to donate as need grows.The program hits close to home for the business because the owner’s grandmother was also diagnosed with the disease.With the locks on guns they become completely unusable, preventing the cylinder from going back in with the rounds to allow the gun to be fired.While the ideal situation is for the guns to be completely removed, the organization says this is the next best option. 1610

"We've always done Christmas, but Christmas exploded for us about seven years ago."For two weekends in November, customers flock to their pop-up store, Christmas at the Barn. It's a Christmas haven for the holiday shopper."It's really become a big family tradition for our customers. They come with their friends, and we have three generations that shop together. We get customers coming from Palm Springs, Orange County, and from as far away as Las Vegas and Arizona," McNamara said.From Christmas ornaments and trees to gnomes, and holiday signs, it's all about making the home merry and warm during the holidays. "We try and bring those items to you that are unique and different," says McNamara. "Where your house feels like a home you want to be, and where you want to celebrate with your family and friends." Of course, this year will be a bit different as in a COVID-19 version of Christmas. Last weekend the store had a line that went out the door. This weekend, as San Diego has entered the state's purple reopening tier, McNamara does not know what to expect."How many people are going to come? We don't know anything. We are limiting our capacity, we are requiring masks at all times covering the mouth and the nose, and we require the use of hand sanitizer at the door," she said.Christmas is all about family and friends. This year, the pandemic will make it more restrictive — but that may mean starting to spread joy even earlier this year."Over decorate your house, and put your tree up now. Who cares, as long as it brings you joy and happiness. Do it, there are no rules this year. It's all about enjoying the season and making those special moments with the little bit of family you can. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order aimed at strengthening child-welfare programs nationwide. Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar hailed the order as a step toward major reforms. The goals include curtailing child maltreatment, strengthening adoption programs and encouraging support for at-risk families so fewer children are placed in foster care. Ok?"Trump's comments came hours after Secretary of State Mike Pompeo returned from a diplomatic mission to Saudi Arabia and Turkey and briefed Trump on Thursday morning in the Oval Office. Both Trump and Pompeo appeared to be buying time for the Kingdom on Thursday saying they were waiting on the results of both Saudi Arabia and Turkey's investigations into the matter before issuing a definitive statement about Khashoggi's death and any possible US action.Trump said he is "waiting for the results" of those investigations, after which he pledged to make "a very strong statement."Even as evidence has mounted that Khashoggi was killed in the Saudi consulate over the last two weeks, Trump has resisted weighing in on Khashoggi's fate, merely saying that he was "very concerned" about the situation and that he hoped the Saudi king and crown prince had no prior knowledge of the matter.And instead of heeding bipartisan calls from lawmakers in Washington to impose stiff consequences on Saudi Arabia and acknowledge that Khashoggi was likely killed by Saudi agents, the President has stressed the importance of the US-Saudi relationship and said he opposes rescinding a US-Saudi arms deal.After returning from Saudi Arabia and Turkey, Pompeo urged Trump to give the Saudis a few more days to release their conclusions.
