SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A serial flasher who exposed himself to seven women near University of California San Diego was sentenced Thursday, according to City Attorney Mara Elliott. Nicholas Saienni, 34, pleaded guilty to four misdemeanor charges of indecent exposure and received a sentence of 180 days of custody, three years of probation, a waiver of his Fourth Amendment search and seizure rights, and court fines and fees. He was also ordered to register as a sex offender and get counseling. If he violates his probation, he could face an additional year and a half in jail, according to prosecutors. San Diego Police arrested Saienni after eight separate incidents between January and March 2019. Prosecutors said Saienni exposed himself to the women while dressed as a jogger and wearing a hooded sweatshirt to conceal his identity. Saienni confessed to the indecent exposure and admitted he had been convicted of similar acts in Delaware in 2018, Elliott reported. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — After all these years, people still love coming to the San Diego Zoo to see the California condors.At one point in the 1980's, there were only 22 of them living outside captivity. The zoo began a major effort to save the species, getting them to reproduce and then releasing them across the state. It's worked. So it's pretty cool," says Maggie Stack, a San Diego State graduate student. Stack is part of a new SDSU team working with the San Diego Zoo to save the bird.As much success as the zoo has had with the condor program, new research shows that the condors in the wild are still under threat."The condors are still critically endangered, so there's still a long way for them to go until we can have a really self-sustaining population," Stack said.RELATED: New giraffe calf joins in the herd at San Diego Zoo exhibitA big reason for that is that the same pollutants that nearly killed the condor off so many years ago are still hurting them today. Stack's team is doing research suggesting that the condors are still dealing with lead poisoning and the chemical DDT, which was banned nearly 40 years ago."Those can cause egg shell thinning in condors," Stack added. "So we're seeing a significant amount of egg shell thinning in condors that live on the coast."A thinner shell means a greater chance of the egg being crushed, often accidentally by the parent condors trying to keep the egg safe.The researchers hope their work at SDSU can help solve the problem. 1768

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A University City lab is switching gears to produce COVID-19 tests on a massive scale.Friday, Helix CEO Marc Stapley took Mayor Kevin Faulconer on a tour of the lab, explaining how they used their technology that scans DNA to understand how genes affect your health, to look instead for COVID-19.They changed focus mid-March and launch one of their two new tests next week. The second test will be available in the summer."As we are beginning to reopen our economy, as people are going back to work and doing it safely, one of the things we have to make sure we have enough of is testing," Mayor Faulconer said. He praised the company for finding solutions to a worldwide problem.Helix's lab is mostly automated, making it ideal for rapid and safe production.The test consists of a nasal swab, like cleaning your nostril out with a q-tip, versus the deeper more uncomfortable tests, and a vial filled with a solution.The solution neutralizes the virus so it is safe to handle.In June Stapley said their new "testing service can scale to 10,000 samples a day," so they can supply hospitals, employers and local governments.The second test is said to be more sensitive than the CDC's test.Stapley said, it "could be sent to individuals, but more likely bulk shipping to large distributors or places of work etcetera, and then individuals will take their kit and go do the necessary swab and send it straight to us."The test results come back within 24 hours. 1483

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An Encinitas student beat out thousands of kids across the country to be named a co-champion in a national history trivia contest. He also uses history to teach kids about COVID-19.Quade Kelley, 11, produces different videos imagining what it would be like for historical figures, like Albert Einstein and Charlie Chaplin, in today’s world. In his videos, the student is telling others “about COVID and what we could do to have the cases go down."In one of his videos, he received the surprise of a lifetime when he found out he was a finalist in the Inaugural “Who Was?” History Bee. Kelley beat out 25,000 kids across the U.S.The student has read nearly 190 books about public and historical figures, over 250 biographies, and spent more than 300 hours studying.“Because of COVID, they canceled New York. It's sort of disappointing, but at least I had an amazing opportunity to be a co-champion," Kelley said.The winners of the contest split ,000. Sheets and towels are provided and changed weekly.
