SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Local health care workers are seeing a massive number of at-risk patients through virtual visits amid concerns over COVID-19. “We've gone from having 100 visits a day [by phone or video] to 1,200 visits just yesterday alone, says Dr. Abi Olulade with San Diego's Sharp Rees-Stealy Group. She and hundreds of doctors with Sharp Healthcare are putting a special emphasis on telehealth appointments with patients who are considered at-risk because their immune systems can be weaker. RELATED: Coronavirus Impact: Concern over nurses' protective gear“[Patients] with lung disease, heart disease, diabetes and those that are immuno-compromised so we are focused on our higher risk patients,” she tells 10News.This week, 10News interviewed Dr. David Wetherhold at Scripps Health whose team is also trying to reach that same population through Scripps' telehealth program. It was supposed to roll out over the next 18 months, but with COVID-19, it's compressed into a few weeks. “The immuno-compromised, transplant patients, heart failure patients or cancer patients. [They’re] going to be our initial focus [with] trying to get them the care they need remotely without bringing them out into the community," Wetherhold said.RELATED: In-person EDD services temporarily closed“They are more at-risk of getting severe complications from coronavirus so we want to limit them coming into the office when we can,” adds Dr. Olulade. She wants to remind at-risk patients to stay in communication with their providers about any new symptoms, even if mild, that could warrant a need for further evaluation. But painstaking work right here in San Diego is bringing the world ever closer to ending malaria."After you've been doing it for a while you get a little bit tired," said PhD student Madeline Luth, as she works over a microscope, "You're hands get a little bit shaky."She's part of a research team at UC San Diego involved in tedious, precise work."I'm using my syringe here to separate out a single mosquito," she said, "to isolate the thorax which contains all of the malaria parasites." Malaria is a parasite spread by mosquitoes; making the insect the deadliest organism on the planet -second only to humans. Millions of people -primarily in poor parts of the world like Africa- are made sick by the parasite every year. And hundreds of thousands die."What we're trying to do is interrupt the process so the infection never takes hold in your liver.," said Dr. Elizabeth Winzeler, who heads up the research team at the UC San Diego School of Medicine. "So you never develop any symptoms of the disease".Dr. Winzeler says here team has tested more than a half million compounds against the parasite. And is now about to release hundreds of promising mixtures to researchers around the world. "They can take the recipes and the information that we've used and start their own anti-malarial drug development," says Dr. Winzeler.The open door approach with no intellectual property protections, is made possible by billions of dollars in grants from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. It is also a necessity since the vast majority of those new drugs will save, are too poor to pay for medicine. The venture is purely to save lives. "We're doing this for the good of humanity, says Dr. Winzeler, "And I think everyone is on board with this idea." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It's the final countdown for the San Diego Zoo's remaining panda bears.The zoo has launched a three-week farewell celebration for 27-year-old giant panda Bai Yun and her son, 6-year-old Xiao Liwu, before the two are repatriated to China this spring. Working with our colleagues in China, San Diego Zoo Global is ready to make a commitment for the next stage of our panda program.”Zoo visitors can see the pandas at their habitat leading up to their departure, and the park will be selling special commemorative bells and offering free tags to hang on the Giant Panda Friendship Wall.How you can see the giant pandasThe San Diego Zoo is open daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. One-day passes for adults cost and for children ages 3-11. Multi-day visit passes are also available, starting at .60 for adults and .60 for children ages 3-11.Once inside the zoo, head over to Panda Canyon. To do so, hang a right on "Front Street" after entering the park and head toward Bieler Plaza. Take a left a the plaza and follow the road down to the panda exhibit. Or take the skytram over the exhibit, and double back over Bashor Bridge. A stairwell at the end of the bridge will lead to Panda Canyon below.
