HONG KONG, April 16 (Xinhua) -- A volunteer from Hong Kong who lost his life on Wednesday when rescuing others in the earthquake- hit Qinghai province of China, has been recommended for a gold medal for bravery at home, local authority said on Friday.Wong Fu-wing, a 46-year-old volunteer, escaped from the earthquake on Wednesday morning but returned to rescue the trapped orphans and teachers in the orphanage where he worked in Yushu county of Qinghai province. He was critically injured by falling debris in a powerful aftershock.Tsang Tak-sing, Secretary for Home Affairs Bureau of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government, said on Friday that Wong has been recommended for the Medal for Bravery of Hong Kong.The Medal for Bravery (Gold), created in 1997, is the first rank in the Order of the Medal for Bravery, awarded for acts of gallantry of the greatest possible heroism or of the most conspicuous courage in circumstances of extreme danger.Chief Secretary Hengry Tang Ying-yen said Thursday that Wong's selfless sacrifice deserved the highest respect and expressed condolences to his family.Wong's family members departed from Hong Kong to the disaster zone of Qinghai province on Thursday to collect his remains. HARBIN, May 16 (Xinhua) -- Seven people were killed, and 98 more injured after a tornado and hailstorm struck northeast China's Heilongjiang Province Saturday, a local official source said Sunday.Altogether 8,502 people were affected, among whom 3,684 were evacuated, after 28 townships of Suihua City, about 120 km from the provincial capital Harbin, were hit by the violent weather from 3:15 p.m. to 5:50 p.m. Saturday, Suihua's emergency response office said in a statement.A total of 1,015 houses were toppled down in the tornado, and Minqiang Village of Gongrong township was hit the hardest, with the roofs of every house being uplifted, it said.Five people of Beilin District and one from Suihua's Lanxi County were killed. The strong wind tore through eight townships of Hailun city under the jurisdiction of Suihua, killing one more people."I was cooking at the outer room when the tornado came. I attempted to close the window, but the wind was so strong and fast that the house collapsed before I could close it," said Wang Junxia, a woman from Xinquan Village of Beilin District, Suihua City.Wang was temporarily buried beneath bricks, but she managed to crawl out of the rubble and saved by the rescuers.Relief work was underway.Two hundred quilts and more than 500 kg of bread were sent to the affected Beilin District.

BEIJING, April 2 (Xinhua) -- China needs to expand the Renminbi, or yuan, cross-border settlement efforts when conditions allow, the People's Bank of China (PBOC) said Friday."It is necessary for China to seek appropriate timing to expand the cross-border yuan settlement to more cities, enterprises and overseas pilot areas," said an international financial market report released on the central bank's website Friday.But the report did not detail the conditions for appropriate timing.The foreign trade volume settled in yuan is still small compared with China's total foreign trade volume, said the report, without specifying figures.Official figures from China's General Administration of Customs showed that the country's exports in 2009 stood at 1.2 trillion U.S. dollars, down 16 percent from 2008.China's State Council, or Cabinet, announced in April 2009 a pilot program to allow exporters and importers in five cities -- Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai and Dongguan -- to settle cross-border trade deals in yuan.The latter four cities are all in south China's Guangdong Province.The Bank of China (BOC), China's largest foreign exchange bank, announced on July 6 last year that its Shanghai branch had received the first cross-border yuan trade settlement deal from the BOC (Hong Kong).The government is considering enlarging the scope of cross-border yuan settlement from commodity trade into service trade, said the report.Yuan settlement was in accordance with the market demand, said Cao Honghui, a researcher with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, but increasing the yuan's global acceptance would be decided by factors such as the country's economic development and the financial system development.
