LONDON — Trucks waiting to get out of Britain are backing up for miles and people are stranded at airports as many countries impose stringent travel restrictions over concerns about a new strain of the coronavirus that authorities say may spread more easily. In an urgent message Saturday, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson closed all non-essential shops, hairdressers, gyms, and pools, and told his country they would have to rethink their holiday plans. He said the new strain appears to be 70% more transmissible than existing strains, and British experts believe this strain is causing the explosive surge in cases in the UK. However, he added "there's no evidence to suggest it is more lethal or causes more severe illness," or that vaccines will be less effective.The World Health Organization and health experts from around the world are researching the new strain, and working to identify what makes it different. On Sunday, COVID-19 testing czar Admiral Brett Giroir told ABC's "This Week" that he doesn't believe a travel ban is necessary at this time. He said health officials around the world have seen almost 4,000 mutations of the coronavirus and there is "no indication" the UK's variant is "overcoming England.""I don't think there should be any reason for alarm right now," Giroir said. Areas that are in the country's top tier, tier 4, which include London and parts of the southeast section of the country, can only get together with their own household and only essential travel is permitted. Local police have noted a disturbing increase in the amount of animals found to have been shot and dumped left to die.Previously, Scripps station WTVF in Nashville reported a?spike in the number of canine thefts in Middle Tennessee that was possibly connected to a local theft ring. Now, rather than just disappearing, the dogs are being killed.One beagle did survive. It was shot in the head and found dumped in a bag. Thankfully, veterinarians in nearby Winchester were able to save the dog.But others were not so lucky. Concerned citizens have sent in photos of dogs found shot and then dumped by the side of the road in a half-dozen middle Tennessee counties."It think it's horrible and we need to figure out why it's happening and who is doing it," said veterinarian Allison Fields at the Hermitage Animal Clinic in Davidson County.The dogs were shot with guns in more rural counties. Now, many wonder if some of them were among the many stolen in recent months."This is a big problem of people taking dogs from people coming into the yard and just snatching them out of yards and just taking them," said Earl Stouzenberger, who lost his dog Leia, earlier this year.Police have been checking for chips in the dead dogs hoping to locate owners."Absolutely, I'm sure they have. Animal Control or police stations will have a scanner," Fields said. But identifying the dogs doesn't solve the riddle of why they were shot and often dumped in public places. A panel of judges rejected the appeal Tuesday, ruling that the bread sold by Subway contains too much sugar to be categorized as a “staple food,” which is not taxed. They said that the bread in Subway's heated sandwiches has a sugar content of 10% of the weight of the flour included in the dough, exceeding the 2% specified in the law.The law makes a distinction between “bread as a staple food” and other baked goods “which are, or approach, confectionery or fancy baked goods,” the judgement said.Bookfinders was appealing a 2006 decision by authorities who refused to refund value-added tax payments. LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Court documents show that a Los Angeles police officer accused of fondling a dead woman has been sued by her family.The lawsuit was filed Tuesday by the family of 34-year-old Elizabeth Baggett. The lawsuit accuses Officer David Rojas of fondling Elizabeth Baggett's breasts and "feeling her nipples, without limitation," as well as showing the body camera video of it to others.The alleged incident happened in October 2019.
