SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County is now able to test for novel coronavirus without needing to send samples to the CDC, the Health and Human Services Agency announced Thursday. The County Public Health Lab can now run up to 40 tests at once. The lab is one of dozens certified by the CDC throughout the U.S. “This is great news for San Diego County and will help with our ongoing efforts to contain COVID-19,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “Being able to test locally means that when we have patients under investigation, we can more rapidly remove unneeded restrictions from those without infection. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Police have identified the man shot and killed near a downtown parking garage in early December as 37-year-old Samuel Burkhalter.The shooting happened on the 1400 block of G Street around 10 p.m. on December 1.Police say they received several calls reporting gunshots in the area. After arriving, officers found Burkhalter at the entrance to a parking garage in the area. Officers provided first aid until relieved by San Diego Fire-Rescue, but say Burkhalter died at the scene.Investigators say a light-skinned man wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and a black hat was seen running through the garage after the shooting. The suspect was later identified as Tyler Cosby, 23. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Police need help finding a man accused of burglarizing a boat and leaving behind a meth pipe and his own feces. The owner of the boat, Donnie Vachon, is still trying to pick up the pieces since it happened. He's out thousands of dollars due to damage and stolen property."Put it in perspective, it's just a boat, but it's our boat, it's our family's boat, it's my grand-babies boat," said Vachon.The theft happened in September and since then Vachon has heard of two more boat burglaries.He says the same off-brand soda can was left on both his boat and one of the others burglarized."It's kind of a heartbreaker, you wake up and go to work every day and here it sits," said Vachon, looking at the boat parked in the driveway.Detectives have not yet confirmed whether the burglaries are connected but are looking into it.If you have any information, contact Crime Stoppers. Winds will pick up on Tuesday. Then, the surf will increase along the coast before the Thanksgiving storm arrives.The atmospheric river will potentially set up the stage for heavy rain, flash flooding, and thunderstorms during the major winter storm. Rainfall totals could average from 3-5 inches for the coast and valleys and 4-8 inches in the mountains. Snow levels will start out high around 8,000 feet. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Police are investigating after a man died in Southcrest Community Park late Friday night. Police were called to the scene after a passerby found a man with trauma and, possibly gunshot injuries to his upper body laying on the 1300 block of South 40th Street just after 10 p.m.San Diego Fire-Rescue was also called to the scene and began life-saving efforts, but police say the man was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say very little is known about the circumstances surrounding the man's death. The victim has been identified, but police haven't released his name at this time.
