SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A state measure just signed into law prohibits landlords and HOAs from discriminating against tenants and members who display religious items on their doors. The new rule stems from a dispute in Little Italy between residents and their HOA. The law "protects the display of a religious item within 15x30 square inches, as long as it does not interfere with the opening or closing of the door," Matt Wagner, with the Anti-Defamation League. The display must not "interfere with building operations and must be posted do to a sincere religious belief," says Matt Wagner, with the Anti-Defamation League.  The new law will take effect on January 1, 2020. The bill was written after a Jewish family in Little Italy was told by their HOA to take down the mezuzah on their door. The HOA has not been named.The posting of the mezuzah is required of all observant Jews. If the display is not posted, it renders a Jewish family essentially unable to live in the home. The Anti-Defamation League stepped in asking the HOA to allow the posting of the religious symbol, but they refused. The new law applies to HOA's and all landlords throughout the state.  "Just because you are a renter… doesn't mean you lose your right to religious freedom or expression," says Assemblymember Todd Gloria. "You are entitled to the same rights and the same protections as a tenant. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego man was walking downtown to his apartment with a pizza Thanksgiving Day, about to spend the evening alone, when he met a gentleman who asked for a slice.The two sat down, shared the pizza and a conversation. The man who bought the pizza, Broc Costa, said the conversation with the homeless man was enlightening. He learned the man was a veteran trying to get mental health services in California, splitting his time between San Diego and Arizona where his wife and kids live.He said it was too expensive to live or buy a hotel room here so he was on the street. "To be blunt, we're all about one or two paychecks away from being in the same situation," Costa said.So next year he bought 5 pizzas to hand out, the next 20 and the year after that, 20 more.This tradition started 7 years ago.Now Costa's raising money and sending volunteers across the county to deliver pizzas to homeless where they reside."It would be really cool for him to see what he started, because he's just as important in this as I was," Costa said he wishes him the best.This year they're at Petco Park's tailgate parking lot near the pedestrian bridge, in Escondido and Pacific Beach delivering more than 50 pizzas and serving 500 to 1,000, according to Costa. 1304

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An Encinitas family on vacation woke up to a disturbing alert last week, video of someone stealing multiple packages from their porch.Homeowner Mark Sandorf says the most peculiar thing was who the thief was."It’s different in that she looks like she’s probably someone’s grandma," said Sandorf.The family immediately filed a police report from New Mexico.10News blurred the woman's face because the San Diego Sheriff's Department has not yet said she's a wanted suspect.One of the packages had sentimental value, three custom holsters for Sandorf's son who is in law enforcement."My son is, like I said, risking his life out there every day and we try to keep him in good equipment and what not. These were custom made by a friend of mine in South Carolina," said Sandorf.Sandorf says the most frustrating thing is knowing the holsters will likely get thrown away.He hopes others in his Encinitas Ranch neighborhood will be on alert after the incident. 980

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An appeals court Friday granted a stay against a San Diego judge's recent ruling allowing strip clubs and restaurants to reopen despite the state's coronavirus restrictions.The decision by the Fourth District Court of Appeals, District One, freezes an earlier ruling, forcing restaurants to again only offer takeout and delivery service, per California's recent health order. Any opposition to the state's filing must be submitted by noon Wednesday.Lawyers for the state argued against the Superior Court ruling, saying it was overreach since no restaurants were parties in the suit filed by two strip club operators.RELATED: San Diego County to appeal ruling on strip clubs, restaurants amid health ordersCounty Supervisor Jim Desmond said in a statement the decision one day after some restaurants reopened was "tragic." "Today's decision to close restaurants one day after they were allowed to open is tragic for San Diego's workforce. The seesawing of people's livelihoods one week before Christmas is devastating," Desmond said in a statement.Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said in his own statement that the appeals court made the right call as cases surge."This is the right decision to protect our communities given the severity of cases and hospitalizations we are experiencing in San Diego County. This week, a judge ruled in favor of Pacers Showgirls and Cheetahs Gentleman's Club, which were forced to close in October due to coronavirus restrictions.
