CHICAGO, Ill. – The pandemic has been affecting how Americans rest. Some have experienced better sleep and odd dreams, while others are left exhausted. With no morning commute and nowhere to drop the kids off, the stress of the pandemic coupled with a lack of scheduling anchors can lead to sleepless nights.“They could have difficulty falling asleep or what I'm seeing most commonly is difficulty staying asleep,” said Dr. Cathy Goldstein, an associate professor of neurology specializing in sleep disruption at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She says being stuck at home with unusual schedules shifts our internal body clocks, known as circadian rhythms, in unhealthy ways.“Now, we don't have to get up and go anywhere. So, I see people push their clocks later and they're falling asleep later at night and then they're sleeping in,” said Goldstein. “And so, the subsequent day, they can't fall asleep.”“Pandemic-induced insomnia” or “COVID-somnia” she says is also being compounded by over consumption of media on laptops, cell phones and tablets.“They also allow us to bring little miniature suns into the sleep period,” said Goldstein.A recent survey from Sleep Standards found that 98% of Americans developed sleep problems post lockdown and 68% feel stress or find it hard to sleep even after the lockdown.According to pharmacy benefits manager Express Scripts, between mid-February and mid-March as the outbreak began ramping up, prescriptions for sleep medications jumped nearly 15% compared to the same time last year.“We have seen an increase in prescriptions for insomnia medications. But we do recommend patients try lifestyle changes or OTC, which are over-the-counter supplements,” said Dr. Jessica Nouhavandi, lead pharmacist and CEO of California-based Honeybee Health.Things you can do to combat “COVID-somnia” include exercising early in the day, setting an alarm to wake up at the same time each day, and disabling the snooze button. You can also try winding down several hours before your fixed bedtime and put your devices away at least two hours before you hit the sack. One other tip Goldstein recommends is using amber blue blocking lenses to help with screens and energy efficient bulbs that emit blue spectrum light.“So, by putting on those glasses four hours before bedtime, you're getting rid of that circadian disrupting light. So, that's a huge help,” said Goldstein. Experts like Nouhavandi say sleep is even more essential while trying to confront the COVID-19 pandemic.“The lack of sleep directly affects not only your physical health but your mental health.” 2607

CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A woman accused of stealing a car containing two young children from outside a Lincoln Park cell phone store and driving to the U.S.-Mexico border, pleaded not guilty today to kidnapping and child abduction charges.RELATED: Police: Woman arrested after stealing car with kids inside, trying to cross border into Mexico?Leslie Esparanza Saenz, 26, was ordered held without bail pending a review hearing next Wednesday.  The father of the 8-year-old girl and 3-year-old boy parked his gold Hyundai Excel outside the Cricket Wireless shop in the 200 block of Euclid Avenue about 12:15 p.m. Monday and went into the business by himself, leaving the vehicle unlocked and its engine running, according to San Diego police.   Moments later, a woman who appeared to be in her late teens got into the car and drove off to the east on Imperial Avenue with the children still inside, Officer Luis Roman said.Police searched for the stolen car and missing children until shortly before 2 p.m., when the Hyundai arrived at the San Ysidro Port of Entry at the southern terminus of Interstate 5.There, federal agents who had gotten a be-on-the-lookout bulletin regarding the auto theft and kidnapping took the driver  - who was later identified as Saenz -- into custody without incident.   Authorities then reunited the children, who had suffered no injuries during the ordeal, with their father and returned his car to him, Roman said.Police have not established a motive for the alleged kidnapping. 1553

CHULA VISTA, Calif., (KGTV) -- No justice served. That is what a Chula Vista father said after he found out that the boys and young men who publicly attacked his son in April already got out of jail. Punch after punch. Kick after kick. Cell phone video shows 16-year-old Paul Martin being beaten while lying helplessly in the fetal position. "Our family changed since that day. It's not the same," Paul's father, Margarito Martin, told 10News. RELATED: Otay Ranch family upset over violent videoThey have not been the same since April 11, 2019. Margarito said his son was at the Cotixan Mexican Restaurant in Otay Ranch after school, defending a friend who had been bullied on social media. That is when seven people robbed and violently assaulted him. Police later arrested five minors and two adults. Investigators found that some of them were wearing cleats for maximum damage. Martin said miraculously, Paul only sustained scrapes, bruises, and a sprained wrist. "They knew what they were doing," Martin said. "They're not kids. They were 18, 19, and one of them was already 20."After a lengthy trial, the attackers were convicted of felony assault. But they were only sentenced to time served. 19-year-olds Aldrin Uy of Paradise Hills and Kent Pasunting of North Bay Terraces received years probation. All seven are now back on the street. RELATED: Family to hold protest outside Chula Vista restaurant after violent video surfacesMartin said he is still in shock of the seemingly lenient sentences for the boys and men who nearly killed his son. The judge cited "restorative justice" for their lighter sentences. "If you injure anybody or assault anybody, [they should] be sentenced more heavily," Martin said. That is why the family is now fighting to change the law regarding juvenile and young adult offenders. They have started a change.org petition to lower the age for adult charges when dealing with serious felonies. "I know they are minors, and they need another chance," Martin said. "We've all been there. Bad stuff when we were kids. Graffiti and that stuff, you're only affecting property. What we want to do is if some minors affect other people physically or assault people, be treated like an adult, and punish them more severely."RELATED: Teens accused in brutal assault at Chula Vista restaurant deny allegationsThe Martin family is also working on creating a non-profit organization called "No Mas" or "No More" to help victims of bullying and violence. 2486
