SAN DIEGO (AP) — California health officials have warned that a severe flu season could overwhelm hospitals that also are dealing with COVID-19. California Secretary of Health and Human Services Dr. Mark Ghaly joined the heads of the state's hospital and medical associations to urge people to get flu vaccines now. Ghaly said while the state has seen progress in recent weeks with a drop in coronavirus cases, officials expect an uptick as the economy continues to open. That makes it critical for hospitals to keep bed space available. Officials said currently hospitals are treating 3,500 confirmed and suspected COVID-19 patients. About 30 percent are in intensive care units. 688

SAN DIEGO — A leader has emerged in the battle between two democrats to represent California's 53rd District in Congress, according to a scientific poll released Tuesday. Sara Jacobs is leading Georgette Gomez 38 percent to 24 percent in the race, with 38 percent still undecided, an ABC-10News Union-Tribune says. Jacobs, a nonprofit founder who served in Obama's State Department, is leading Gomez among Democrats, Independents and Republicans who say they have made up their minds. Gomez, currently the San Diego City Council president, is leading Jacobs among the youngest voters, those between the ages of 18 to 34. Thad Kousser, a political scientist at UC San Diego, said the poll still shows the race isn't over, despite Jacobs' big lead. Kousser noted Jacobs still has not secured at least 50 percent of the vote, according to the poll."We're going to see an all-out press and more money spent by each of these candidates because they see that this race is far from over," Kousser said. "Sara Jacobs hasn't closed the deal, Georgette Gomez still sees a light at the end of the electoral tunnel from this poll."The candidates combined spent nearly million campaigning through June 30. Jacobs, granddaughter of Qualcomm founder Irwin Jacobs, reported .5 million in receipts, while Gomez reported .17 million. "It's always nice to have polls reflect what we're feeling on the ground, which is that what voters are looking for in this district is someone who has the kind of experience I have working in the federal government and who will be a new generation of leaders," Jacobs said in an interview. In a statement, a spokesperson for Gomez's campaign expressed confidence. “It’s still early and not a single vote has been cast," the statement said. "Georgette Gómez’s message of leadership in response to the coronavirus crisis and standing up to Trump as President of the San Diego City Council is starting to reach voters. Our campaign is ramping up its efforts to reach voters in every corner of the district."Kousser said Jacobs likely has more name recognition, given her ads and her unsuccessful attempt in 2018 to run for Congress in Coastal North County's 49th District. In the case of Gomez, he said local politics such as City Council does not garner as much attention as it should. The poll, of 534 likely voters, showed 63 percent of the undecided voters are Republicans, in the heavily blue district. Kousser said they simply may decide not to vote in that race. The poll also shows Joe Biden beating President Trump 61 to 30 in the 53rd, which comprises central San Diego and heads south into Chula Vista. The seat came open after Democrat Susan Davis announced she would retire after serving for nearly 20 years. 2751

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KGTV) - While some California counties are seeing stable rates of coronavirus cases and hospitalizations, others are seeing numbers they say raise concerns, according to the California Department of Public Health."We actively monitor all 58 counties and their current data," Governor Gavin Newsom said at a press conference on Monday.According to the California Department of Public Health's website, "The state will work closely with Local Health Departments to identify action steps and timelines for addressing issues that impact indicators of concern.”"We are providing technical assistance, we are providing resources, human resources and physical resources," Newsom said.As of Wednesday, state officials were working with 10 counties that have impact indicators of concern. At a Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors meeting earlier this week, health officials explained the state's concern about hospitalizations.Health officials told the board, they were working to find out if the increase was in Santa Barbara County residents hospitalized or people from outside the county."What this means is we will be meeting with the state (Wednesday), the team, to talk about the drivers of the increased hospitalization and what our next steps in addressing and monitoring a stable hospitalization," Santa Barbara County health officials said on Tuesday.Other counties on the list are dealing with things such as elevated disease transmission potentially from public protests with large numbers of people in close proximity without face coverings and outbreaks in skilled nursing facilities and prisons.According to the California Department of Public Health's website, "Over the past several months, California has used data and science to drive our response to COVID-19. The county data posted below is intended to give Californians insight into how their county is doing and provide some early indication of developing areas of concern.""It is incumbent upon state and local governments, business sectors, and individuals to work together and take actions that limit the transmission of COVID-19. Only together can we make a difference," the site says. "Opened sectors should follow state guidance on how to reduce risk to the public, and individuals should continue to practice safety precautions such as wearing face coverings in public, physical distancing of at least six feet, frequent handwashing, and disinfecting surfaces. Those over 65 or those with underlying health conditions should continue to stay at home."Health officials say if a county that is being monitored meets the state threshold criteria three consecutive days, that indicator will no longer be flagged. 2712

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 30-year-old man was killed when he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed into a fire hydrant in a neighborhood north of Scripps Ranch, police said Thursday. The crash was reported around 4:20 p.m. on Stonebridge Parkway near Stockwood Cove, off Pomerado Road in the Rancho Encantada neighborhood, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said. The victim was riding his 2019 Indian Scout motorcycle between 80-100 mph eastbound on Stonebridge Parkway when he lost control at a curve in the road, jumped the curb and slammed into a fire hydrant, Buttle said. The rider was ejected onto the roadway and pronounced dead at the scene, he said. The man's name was withheld pending family notification. 722

SAN DIEGO — The County Office of Education is taking its annual job fair entirely online, with already more than 800 registered job seekers. The job fair, which is regularly held at Liberty Station, will instead feature virtual lobbies and virtual tables. Dr. Sheiveh Jones, who organized the fair for the office of education, said more than 25 school districts and charter schools are participating. She said there may not be as many openings as in prior years because of temporary budget uncertainty, but that could change by the end of the summer. "When a position does open, the district may invite you to apply or they may just recognize your name when they look at the applications," she said. Jones said the districts are hiring for both academic and non-academic positions. She added there is always demand for bilingual, special education, STEM and substitute teachers. She said her best advice is to check out the posted jobs online ahead of time at Edjoin, so jobseekers can be better prepared to meet hiring managers, or even apply before the fair. The event begins at 3 p.m. Tuesday and lasts for three hours. 1131
