WENZHOU, Zhejiang, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- At least 246 tourists remain stranded on an island in east China's Zhejiang Province Tuesday as tropical storms and a typhoon cut off ship ferrying services Monday, local authorities said. The tourists, including six Russians and 26 students, have to stay in hotels in Nanji Island, a popular tourist destination in Wenzhou City of Zhejiang, after local transport authorities suspended ship services Monday due to strong gales triggered by two approaching tropical storms and typhoon Kompasu.Officials have said that room charges have been cut by up to 86 percent, to 40 yuan (5.9 U.S. dollars) per day, for the tourists. Also, local government workers are trying to help the Russians solve visa problems and book new flight tickets.Ship routes are expected to reopen after the wind weakens.

PYONGYANG, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- A delegation of senior Chinese military officers led by Guo Boxiong, vice chairman of China's Central Military Commission held on Sunday a memorial ceremony for Chinese People's Volunteers (CPV) martyrs in Hoechang County, South Phyongan Province.Wreaths in the name of leaders of the Communist Party of China and Chinese government as well as the visiting delegation were laid in front of the cemetery for the CPV martyrs.A wreath signed jointly by the Worker's Party of Korea (WPK) Central Committee, the Presidium of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Supreme People's Assembly and the DPRK cabinet was also laid to mourn the fallen CPV martyrs.Guo Boxiong (L Front), vice chairman of China's Central Military Commission, addresses a memorial service at the martyrs cemetery of the Chinese People's Volunteers (CPV) in Hoechang County of South Phyongan Province, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), Oct. 24, 2010.Addressing the memorial ceremony, Guo said that 60 years ago the CPV crossed the Yalu River to support the DPRK people to fight the imperialist invasion and safeguard justice and peace and won a great historic victory.During the tough war, the Chinese volunteers sacrificed themselves and demonstrated the great internationalism and they forged, with their blood, the unbreakable China-DPRK friendship, Guo said. Many of the volunteers died in the DPRK, and they represent the best of China's fine sons and daughters, and their names will go down in history, Guo said. Thanks to the close care by DPRK's late top leader Kim Il Sung and the direct guidance of General Secretary Kim Jong Il, the bodies of the CPV martyrs were buried properly and the cemetery has been under careful maintenance, he added.

TIANJIN, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- China's top climate change official said on Wednesday that the country's greenhouse gas emissions would peak earlier than expected if developed countries complied with international protocols."We will try to get past the peak of emissions as early as possible, but this also hinges on how much money the developed nations will offer and what technology they will transfer, as required by the international protocols," Xie Zhenhua, who is also vice minister of the National Development and Reform Commission, told reporters on the sidelines of the ongoing United Nations climate talks in northern China's Tianjin."The more money they provide, or the earlier the money arrives, the sooner we should be able to pass the emissions peak," Xie said.He noted some developed countries, even with a per capita GDP of more than 40,000 U.S. dollars per year, have yet to reach their emissions peak as their greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise."Under such circumstances, how can you ask China, with a per capita GDP just over 3,000 U.S. dollars, to foresee its peak?" he asked. After three rounds of talks this year, which are moving slowly towards a negotiated text for the Cancun meeting, more than 3,000 delegates from 194 nations gathered in Tianjin to speed the search for common ground prior to a major meeting in Mexico's Cancun at the end of the year. However, the gap remains wide between developed and developing nations as rich nations remain wary of green technology transfers and providing additional financing to poorer nations.
