The unemployment rate has dipped below 4 percent for the first time since 2000.The United States added 164,000 jobs in April, the Labor Department reported Friday. That was slightly below what economists expected. Unemployment dropped to 3.9 percent, the lowest since December 2000."The employment situation continues to surprise everyone," said Robert Frick, chief economist with Navy Federal Credit Union. "Getting down to 3.9 is quite a marker."Wages grew 2.6 percent from a year earlier. That was also slightly below expectations.The report indicates another month of solid job growth for an economy that has been expanding for almost nine years — the second-longest streak on record.Hiring gains in April were broad. Professional and business services added 54,000 jobs, health care added 24,000, and manufacturing posted an increase of 24,000 jobs.The mining sector added 8,000 jobs, extending its gains. Employment in mining has risen by 86,000 since October 2016.The wage growth number seemed unlikely to alarm Wall Street, which has been worried in recent months about inflation. Stock futures were little changed after the report came out.Inflation is closing in on the Federal Reserve's 2% target, gasoline is heading toward a gallon, and companies are reporting cost pressures. Faster inflation could force the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates more quickly than planned.Frick believes unemployment will keep falling as businesses offer more attractive wages and benefits to fill openings."There's still hundreds of thousands of more people who will enter the workforce," he said. "I think we can get down to 3.5 percent."If unemployment falls much further, it will reach territory not seen in half a century. The United States and Mexico have reached an agreement to change parts of NAFTA, the trade deal that President Donald Trump has derided for years as unfair.Trump announced the agreement from the Oval Office Monday, with Mexican President Enrique Pe?a Nieto dialed in on a conference call.But the deal left open the question of whether Canada, the third country in NAFTA, would agree to the changes -- and Trump himself said he wanted to throw out the name NAFTA altogether."They used to call it NAFTA," Trump said. "We're going to call it the United States-Mexico trade agreement. We're going to get rid of NAFTA because it has a bad connotation."Negotiators for both countries agreed to a new rule that dictates where auto parts are made.Under the current law, about 62 percent of the parts in any car sold in North America must be produced in the region or automakers have to pay import taxes. The new preliminary agreement would require that 75 percent of auto parts be made in the United States and Mexico, according to the U.S. Trade Representative's office.Much of the business world has been worried about Trump's trade policies, and the stock market reacted positively to the news. The Seattle Seahawks postponed a workout with free agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick after Kaepernick declined to stop kneeling during the national anthem, ESPN reports.According to ESPN, the Seahawks contacted the former 49ers quarterback two weeks ago to arrange a workout. However, the meeting was canceled at the last minute over the constroversial protest.Kaepernick began kneeling for the national anthem during the 2016 preseason, saying he was hoping to bring attention to police brutality. He continued his protest through the 2016 season, and his contract with the 49ers was not extended following the season.Kaepernick has not played since the 2016, though he is still a free agent and can be signed by any team. In October, Kaepernick filed a grievance against the NFL alleging the owners colluded to blackball him from the league. He was deposed by the league in connection with his complaint earlier this week.Kaepernick's former teammate and fellow free agent Eric Reid was also reportedly asked by Cincinnati Bengals owner Mike Brown about kneeling during the anthem during a workout with the team.
