CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - It takes a lot to run a robot. Engineers need to fix and maintain the creation. Coders need to tell it what to do. Battery techs make sure power is abundant. Managers organize data.It sounds like a lot. But a group of Chula Vista students has it down to a science.Rancho Del Rey Middle School's Royal Robotics team is a "well-oiled machine," as they like to put it. And generally, some of them will be tournament champions so we do have to make our robot highly effective to combat them,"And the team has put in long hours to perfect their creation."They take the robot home with their parents' help and work on the weekends," teacher Kirk Braito said. "It's just an amazing amount of dedication."Thanks to the completeness of their design notebook, which houses all their data, the team hopes to grab the award for best design and have a championship banner to hang at Rancho Del Rey.But the team faces one last obstacle, getting to Kentucky."It is an enormous financial obligation that I'm trying desperately to make up because the funding is basically all us," Braito said.The team has set up a GoFundMe to help with expenses and has raised almost half of their goal. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - As the City of Chula Vista prepares to license legal recreational marijuana sales, law enforcement and a handful of other agencies are cracking down on illegal pot shops.In the last three years, they've shut down 44 of them. The city's cannabis information page on its website also lists a handful of locations that are currently facing lawsuits or other "enforcement actions."City officials say they're trying to make sure that when recreational marijuana sales become legal, only licensed stores are selling."That's our goal," says Deputy City Manager Kelley Bacon. "Our goal is to get 100% of the illegal operations shut down, and that's what we're working towards."The city has used a combination of zoning laws, fire inspections and other unspecified methods to shut down illegal shops. Recently, a SWAT raid at 1274 Third Avenue helped close a store operating on what some people have nicknamed the "green mile" because of a prevalence of marijuana-related businesses.Business owners in the neighborhood say they were glad to see the city take action."It was bad for us," says Paolo Passuello, who works at Ted's Garage on Third. "We'd come in the morning, and our driveway would be flooded with joints and little containers that the pot comes in. We're glad the city stepped in and did what they did."After the passage of Proposition 64 in 2016, which legalized recreational marijuana sales in California, individual cities had the discretion to decide how and when they'd allow it. Chula Vista chose to wait a few years and research what other cities and states did. They talked with people from across California, Colorado and other places to see what worked."We learned that you need to take it slow," says Bacon. "You need to make sure you write good, tight regulations and ordinances."In November of 2018, voters passed a city sales tax that allowed Chula Vista to start the process of licensing shops. The city plans to allow 12 shops total, 3 in each City Council district. Also, they'll only allow 2 of those shops to have store-fronts. They will also allow ten indoor cultivation businesses, which will be limited to 20,000 square feet each.The application process for those licenses will start sometime in January. A specific date will be posted on the city's website (see link above). Applicants will only have five days to submit an online application.Bacon says anyone who has already been known to operate an illegal shop will not be eligible to apply for a legal license.Even after the new, legal stores open, Bacon says the city will still target illegal shops."It's a little bit like whack-a-mole," she says. "You close one down and sometimes by the end of the day they've opened up in a different location."The city also has plans to start a criminal prosecution unit within the City Attorney's office explicitly targeting illegal shops and their owners. 2916

But some drivers working for popular ride sharing services like Uber and Lyft are willing to break the law.A hidden camera, undercover investigation by Scripps station WXYZ in Detroit exposed those willing to risk children’s lives for the price of a ride.In Michigan, the law is clear: Children younger than eight or shorter than 57 inches have to be in a child safety seat.First responders say it’s a matter of life and death.“I’ve watched a child go forward, go into the windshield and have a crushed skull,” EMS paramedic Gary McMenamin said.WXYZ decided to put Uber and Lyft drivers to the test, to find out just how many were willing to ignore state law and drive a mother and her 2-year-old son without a child safety seat.Emily Gottschling and her son “Weston” hailed six rides — three to Uber and three to Lyft. Gottschling agreed to be part of the hidden camera investigation.After calling six different drivers, five of them were willing to illegally take Gottschling for a ride without a child car seat.“People have gotten in the car and never asked, so we just go,” one driver said.“If you’re alright with it, I’m okay with it,” another driver said.A different driver acknowledged the law, then said, “Well, I’ll be careful.”The last driver would not allow Gottschling into his car for fear if being ticketed. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - A South Bay couple said they were able to pay off their mortgage by renting out their home on the weekends.“We paid off our house, and now we weekend on a boat. It’s incredible,” said Chris Morrow.Stepping into Chris Morrow’s backyard is like crossing a plane into an outdoor oasis. It's filled with toys, games, and multiple spots where you can pull up a chair and relax."You want to use every space of your backyard,” Morrow said.But having a dream backyard and a home in Chula Vista was once just a dream."Being a journalist, you don’t make a lot of money these days -- you follow your heart. Living in San Diego County, which is a resort town, you need to be creative,” Morrow said.Morrow is a CNN iReporter and a food and travel writer. About five years ago, before the housing market got hot, she and her husband leveraged their money and bought the Chula Vista home."I never even thought about Chula Vista, but it's a beautiful area,” she said. “I have a 1947 craftsman home, natural wood floors, beautiful plaster walls. There's a lot of uniqueness to it.”Morrow’s turned that charm into a small business: an Airbnb rental. It’s a move that drastically changed her life."Everybody wants to live that American dream, and we're doing it because we're renting this house out for Airbnb,” she said.Here's how they did it. Morrow said a few years into homeownership, she tried renting out just one of their rooms. It was a good first step, but it didn't bring in any extra cash. Morrow said they ended up spending most of the money on the guest they were hosting."I wasn't able to use that money for anything else, just entertaining,” she said.They decided to up the ante. Instead of renting out one room, Morrow said they rented out the entire house. It meant adding beds, furniture and moving into a hotel on the weekends."The first time we decided to rent the house we were so nervous,” Morrow said. “We must have driven by the house at least six times just to make sure they weren't having a huge party that you hear about in those movies."The decision was a hit. Now their rental can host up 16 people. The going rate is anywhere from 0 to ,800 a night. They’re regularly hosting large groups and have even done a wedding in the backyard. Most weekends are booked solid."We've paid this house off, and we were able to buy a boat, we're able to pay for the gas for the boat,” Morrow said.The extra income means they don't have to stay at a hotel on the weekends. Instead, they purchased a two-cabin, one-bath, 41-foot sport fisher boat. The purchase made possible by renting out her house."We’re living the dream,” she said. “We're staying here (the boat) on the weekends, and we're loving it.”In a resort town, one of the more expensive places in the country, Morrow is not only surviving, but she's also thriving. All it took was a little ingenuity and trust in people."We are creatively living the American dream,” she said.Tips for being a successful 5-star rental takes more than just renting out your house to be successful. Morrow has these tips she believes will help someone succeed:- Have outdoor games for guests- If possible, a garden can add to the backyard ambiance- Provide handwritten notes special for each guest- Post check-out information in a visible spot- Keep the refrigerator clean and add bottles of water, and maybe even a welcome gift- Include a local map with places that make the area special- Supply extra blankets and pillows (make sure they are clean)- Invest in great WiFi- If you accept smokers, provide ashtrays and smoking guidelines- Supply extra toiletries in an accessible spot- If you have a gas fireplace, make sure it’s on a timer 3721
CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Some unusual notices are showing up on front doors in the South Bay, sparking confusion and worries.On the first Saturday in May came the first encounter. Off J Street, Tony heard a knock and saw a casually dressed man at his door from a company called Pacific Home Remodeling. "He was looking to inspect homes for estimates of remodeling costs," said Tony, who asked us not to use his real name.Tony is a renter and told the man he wasn't interested. "I had to continually repeat, 'I'm not interested' before he finally left. He came back a second time a few days later - and the same situation," said Tony.Once again, the man was asked to leave. A week later, Tony and his cousin found a flyer stuck on their front door. It read 'NOTICE' in big block letters, and included a name and cell number, along with 'We were here for inspection and we missed you. Please call to arrange a new inspection.' The company at the bottom of the paper: Pacific Home Remodeling. A confused Tony set it aside. "I thought maybe they meant to put this notice on another house," said Tony.Then on Tuesday, the man turned up again. Tony's cousin was the only on home and heard a banging at the door. He was just inside the door, when he saw the man with his hand on the knob outside."He uses me cousin's name and my name saying we authorized him to come inspect home and look around. That wasn't true. My cousin told him to leave, and 10 minutes later, he returns and says he just got approval from me. Problem for him was I was on the phone," said Tony. Despite the notice, neither of them had given approval for an inspection. Tony later posted the incident on Nextdoor. Neighbors reported finding the same notices on their doors. One claimed a salesperson tried to talk his way into home past a confused elderly woman. A spokesperson with the company said they're looking into Tony's claims, but defended the use of the notices as "marketing material." Tony doesn't buy it. "It's deceptive. Very official looking. They put these notices on doors and hope people don't communicate with one another, and gain access to the house. It's very concerning," said Tony.Tony attempted to file a police report with Chula Vista Police, but says he was told there wasn't evidence a crime was committed.According to the Contractors State License Board, the Los-Angeles based Pacific Home Remodeling has had several citations dating back to 2015 and was put on probation. The latest accusations include poor work and failure to obtain permits. Hearing dates set for later this month and June could determine what happens to the company's license. 2764
