Alleged Austin serial bomber Mark Anthony Conditt was "a deep thinker" who came from a tight family that home-schooled him, people who knew him told CNN on Wednesday.Conditt killed himself early Wednesday after police, who had been staking out his hotel, followed him onto Interstate 35. After a short time, authorities said, Conditt pulled into a ditch and detonated an explosive device as Austin Police Department SWAT team members approached his car. That he could be a skilled bombmaker responsible for at least six explosive devices, five of which detonated, over an almost three-week period in Austin and outside San Antonio seemed unthinkable to his grandmother, she said, adding that he was a quiet, kind and loving person and she'd never seen any signs of malice or violence in him. 798
After slamming Florida and lashing Georgia, Michael is far from finished as it swirls northeast, threatening the storm-weary Carolinas. Since making landfall on Wednesday as a powerful Category 4 hurricane, the now tropical storm has left thousands of people without power, uprooted trees, turned homes and marinas into ruins and killed at least 2 people.Live updates on Hurricane Michael"It feels like a nightmare," Linda Albrecht, a councilwoman in Mexico Beach, Florida, said of the catastrophic damage in her town. "Somebody needs to come up and shake you and wake you up."The wrath of Michael continued into Georgia, bringing possible tornadoes and winds that kept first responders away from the streets for hours --- even as the storm weakened and became a tropical storm. On Thursday, authorities and residents will begin to discover the full extent of Michael's destruction in Florida and Georgia while the Carolinas brace for possible flooding, tornadoes and dangerous winds in many of the same areas still recovering from Hurricane Florence flooding.Michael is expected to drop 4 to 7 inches of rain from eastern Georgia to the southern Mid-Atlantic and up to 9 inches of rain in isolated parts of North Carolina and Virginia, the National Hurricane Center said."While we will not see the full force of Hurricane Michael the way Florida will, we could see gusty winds, rain, flash flooding and even tornadoes," South Carolina Emergency Management Director Kim Stenson told CNN affiliate WACH. 1520

AAA is expecting the great American road trip to make a big comeback this summer. If that’s how you plan to spend your vacation time amid the pandemic, think about COVID-19 when you pack. Bring face coverings, gloves, thermometers, and cleaning supplies.Don't just think about where you're heading, but where you are passing through. That way, you can avoid hot spots.Gas stations are open, but some rest stops, restaurants, and attractions may be closed or only allowing limited capacity.“A lot of places are requiring reservations,” said Jeanette Casselano, a spokesperson for AAA. “The last thing you want to do is get somewhere and you're not going to be allowed in, because you don't have that reservation, because you haven't called ahead, or you haven't done your research.”AAA also recommends you reach out to your hotel to learn of any new guidelines in place. You can use your cleaning supplies in your room.“Yes, they've been cleaned and they're extra protocols in place for sanitation,” said Casselano. “For peace of mind, wipe down those high traffic areas when you get into your room – light switches, faucets, lamps, and of course the remote control.”You can find help for planning road trips on AAA’s website. They also have a COVID-19 travel restriction map. 1281
