SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- For quite some time, it looked as if it would never happen, but now it's a great to be an Aztec, as ground has finally been broken on the SDSU West Mission Valley Project. And what an exciting times it is, as the centerpiece of the plans includes a brand new stadium. "It will become the signature project that defines the future. Not only for SDSU, but for higher education in California," says San Diego State President Adela de la Torre. The project will include an innovative educations district, 86 acres of land used for a park and recreation, affordable housing, a hotel, and of course, a 35 thousand seat stadium "I can't wait to see the team run on to Basher field and enjoy the cheers of 35 thousand fans,"says de la Torre.Equally excited is Aztecs Director of Athletics JD Wicker."We are building a stadium for Aztecs football, international and professional soccer, concerts, and any other event you can think of. You name it, we'll host it."And who knows, maybe someday San Diego will see the return of the NFL.Jack McGrory, a member of the SDSU Board of Trustees, says the new stadium will be built with the NFL in mind. "That's really their minimum specification for the NFL, 55 thousand seats. We can do that down there."The SDSU West Project wasn't easy, as many challenges were dealt with along the way. But as San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer describes it, it's time to write the next chapter for Mission Valley."SanDiegans should take great satisfaction in knowing that the future of this land is finally set. As a place where education, athletics, and the community will thrive side by side."The stadium is set to be open and ready for Aztecs football in 2022. 1707

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- From big box stores to locally based companies, a number of businesses in San Diego County are significantly scaling up their workforces to meet the demand caused by the coronavirus.Walmart, the nation’s largest employer, plans to hire 150,000 associates by May, including 6,200 in California. The company has boosted pay and bonuses, raising e-commerce employee wages by an hour as online orders surge. In the San Diego area, the company is looking for cashiers and stockers, employees at fulfillment centers and truck drivers, said spokeswoman Tiffany Wilson.RELATED: San Diego COVID-19 trackerWith a lot of customers now shopping online for in-store pick-up, Walmart has a high demand for personal shoppers to fulfill those orders, Wilson said.Papa John’s announced Monday it will hire 20,000 workers nationwide, including 130 to 140 team members in San Diego County alone. The company is hiring various team member roles in stores along with delivery drivers, said spokesman Blair Carpenter.“Typically, delivery drivers can expect to earn up to to 15 an hour, and wages can vary at franchise locations,” Carpenter said.RELATED: What's the difference? Cold vs. flu vs. coronavirus symptomsCVS Health announced plans to hire 50,000 workers across the country, including more than 300 people in the San Diego area, part of what it calls the “most ambitious hiring drive in the company’s history.”The company is also boosting bonuses by 0 to 0 for health professionals and in-store associates working on the front lines.“If people have a mindset where they’re passionate about the customer, I’d love to have them apply,” said CVS Vice President of Talent Acquisition Jeffrey Lackey.RELATED: INTERACTIVE MAP: Confirmed coronavirus cases in San Diego CountyLocally based grocer Jimbo’s is also scaling up its workforce, with plans to hire 60-75 new employees. The positions include “food service, meat and produce clerks, stockers, cashiers and baggers,” the company said in a statement.Jimbo’s has given employees a 50 cent per hour raise, boosting its minimum wage to at least an hour. The company said it has opportunities available at their 4S Ranch, Carlsbad, Carmel Valley, Escondido and Horton Plaza locations. Many businesses are accelarating their hiring during the pandemic. Walmart and CVS said they had shortened the hiring process from about two weeks to about one day. RELATED: What's open during California's coronavirus 'stay at home' orderPapa John’s said many applicants would be hired the same day they apply.“We have simplified the hiring process so that most individuals can start in most restaurants on the same day,” said Carpenter. “Applications can be done online in just a few minutes, and we are offering flexibility to interview by phone or in-person, with some safety precautions in place.” 2862

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Erica Norman spent months saving thousands for a cruise down the Mexican Riviera on the massive Norwegian Bliss. Norman and about 4,000 others boarded that ship this week and were whisked away from the Port of Los Angeles. They were excited for a trip down to Cabo and Mazatlan - but instead, they wound up in San Francisco."I paid ,000 for this cruise and it's just a tour going in a circle in California," said Norman, who lives in Orange County. "I'm not happy about that."Norman said that about two hours into the cruise, the passengers got an announcement that the ship would divert to San Francisco, San Diego, and make one stop in Ensenada before heading back to Los Angeles. The ship made the call to avoid Hurricane Willa down south. RELATED: Tropical storms force Norwegian Bliss cruise ship to divert to San Diego"The safety and security of our guests and crew is always our top priority," Norwegian cruises said in a statement. "Guests were notified of the change as soon as our operations team was able to confirm the modified itinerary."But Norman said many of the guests felt blindsided. "I think they knew ahead of time, and then once they got us out in the water then they decided to change the itinerary because no one could get off at that time," Norman said. The Bliss reached San Diego Wednesday morning. At 1,094 feet long and a capacity of 4,004 passengers, it's the largest to ever dock in San Diego, a city that usually gets older ships on less traveled routes. RELATED: Cruise industry booming as season begins in San Diego"The guests will visit all the attractions, go on tours, go to restaurants, go shopping," said Adam Deaton, who directs cruise business for the Port of San Diego. About two dozen taxicabs waited for the passengers as they disembarked on Harbor Drive. Bikes that normally would have baked in the sun were rented. And pedicab drivers said they were finding new passengers. A food mart across from the ship had a line about 10 deep. "I'd rather be safe than sorry to even get in the area of Willa," said Lillie West, a passenger who said she was glad the ship diverted.West had never been to San Diego and said she had 0 to spend locally. The Port says most cruise ships have a 0,000 impact to the local economy in their stops in San Diego, although the Bliss is so big it could be up to million. But not everyone planned to spend their dollars in San Diego, Norman included."I work 45 minutes from here, and I'm just trying to find something to do to make the best of it," she said. For Norman, that was to go back onto the Bliss, the ultramodern ship where many of the amenities are prepaid. 2761
