SAN DIEGO (Daily Aztec) - San Diego State men’s basketball returned in triumphant fashion to the friendly confines of Viejas Arena, defeating Jackson State 87-44 in front of a crowd of 10,453 on Tuesday night.SDSU (4-2), just six days removed from competing in the Maui Invitational in Maui, Hawaii, scored the first 11 points and never trailed in a wire-to-wire victory over the Tigers.In Maui, SDSU came away victorious against defending Big East champion Xavier, but struggled in losses to Duke and Iowa State, falling by deficits of 30 and 26 points, respectively.  Head coach Brian Dutcher said the game was a chance for the Aztecs to show what they were made of, following tough defeats.“We were challenged against Xavier and came back, we were challenged against Iowa State and didn’t fight hard enough,” Dutcher said. “So I said this is the next challenge. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) --  A federal judge ordered that the Trump administration reinstate the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival program, also known as DACA. The DACA program - which protects nearly 800,000 undocumented immigrants brought to the United States as children from being deported. While the decision has been made, it won't be an easy road for the people involved. The restart is delayed until August 23, to allow the government time to appeal Judge John Bates' decision.  For Dreamers like Ali Torabi, Friday's win is just the latest in the political tug of war.RELATED: San Diego Dreamers heading to the Capitol“I was preparing for, in the next four days, the complete opposite," Torabi said. He believed he might be deported. "I was actually working on my med school applications, and I was like, ‘I need to get my things together now.’”Torabi is a DACA student from Iran and a 22-year resident of San Diego.  He said Judge Bates' decision is huge for the undocumented immigrants protected by the program. But being in constant limbo can be emotionally draining. "Having this back and forth, where one day we don’t know if we’ll have any protection and were up to be potentially deported or detained, to telling us, well yea we’ll keep the protections...it’s difficult," he said. "I’m not going to lie to you, it’s emotionally difficult.”It isn't over yet. Judge Bates ruling could conflict with another decision on the program -  expected to be ruled on by a federal judge in Texas by as early as next week.The Texas Attorney General calls the program unconstitutional because it came from an executive order.“It invites future presidents to ignore the law, ignore the will of the people, and set their own policies on the second amendment, privacy rights, drug laws, or any other important issues debated in Congress," said Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. Torabi said he has hope. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A group of Uber and Lyft drivers hit San Diego roads Friday morning to tell everyone they passed to vote no on Proposition 22.Prop. 22 is a ballot measure that would make rideshare and delivery companies exempt from Assembly Bill 5, a new California law that classifies many "gig economy" workers as employees.AB 5 turns the 2018 state Supreme Court "Dynamex" decision into codified law. It says companies like Uber, Lyft and DoorDash have to classify their drivers as employees and not independent contractors under what's called the "ABC Test" of employment.That gives the drivers access to protections like minimum wage, unemployment insurance, time off and other protections not usually given to independent contractors.Prop. 22 would give the drivers some wage protection and health insurance subsidies, but not as much protection as AB 5."It strips us of all our rights," Lyft and Uber driver Tonje Ettesvoll said of Prop. 22. "We're talking unemployment, we're talking health benefits, we're talking sick days, family leave. If they win Proposition 22, all those things go out the window."Ettesvoll organized the car caravan, which went from the rideshare lot at San Diego International Airport to Lyft's San Diego headquarters on Morena Boulevard. About a dozen cars joined her on the road, decorated with signs and stickers urging people to vote no.At the end of the ride, Ettesvoll and other organizers gave out hand sanitizer and masks to drivers. They say Lyft and Uber don't provide those items, but still expect drivers to clean their cars between each passenger drop-off. They worry the new rules would turn them into full-time employees and they'd lose some of their independence and ability to be their own boss.Ettesvoll and the drivers on Friday hope voters end the debate and force the companies' hands."They have had years to abide by the law," she said. "This isn't something new. That you have to pay your workers a minimum wage isn't new. That you have to have a certain amount of benefits for people isn't anything new. San Diego (KGTV) –  Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer Friday announced the expansion of his successful “Play All Day” initiative, a pledge to break ground on or upgrade 50 parks in five years, by adding an additional 15 parks to neighborhoods across the city.   The program was initially proposed during Mayor Kevin Faulconer's 2016 State of the City address and the initiative is a partnership between the City of San Diego and the San Diego Unified School District, designed to maximize public resources and increase the amount of city park space, especially in urban communities. The parks are used by the school system during the day and remain open to the community after school hours.  720

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 9-year-old San Diego girl is using her cookie business to help support other local businesses.The 9-year-old, named Daniele, wrote a letter to Kenny Chen, the owner of Onyx Moto in Kearny Mesa, proposing a way to increase business.Daniele is proposing that Chen use Girl Scout Cookies to sell more motorcycles.RELATED: Girl Scout sells more than 300 boxes of cookies at San Diego marijuana dispensary“You can give customers a box (of girl scout cookies) while they sign all those papers. They may even buy the second warranty,” the three-page letter reads.“You have customers and they get hungry.
