SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Strong Santa Ana winds moved through San Diego County Tuesday, toppling a big rig as it traveled on Interstate 8 near Alpine. The crash happened at 8:30 a.m. in the eastbound lanes at Willows Road, blocking the left lane for about an hour and a half, CHP officer Jim Bettencourt reported. Another semi overturned on Interstate 15 in Fontana. San Diegan Bashar Shebo was driving through the area on his way to Las Vegas. Check 10News Pinpoint Weather “So crazy man, the car was going left and right, left and right like this, barely could control it,” said Bashar Shebo. “We just saw a trailer was flipped over on the side.” The High Wind Warning was in effect through 10 p.m. for the mountain areas, with a Wind Advisory for the inland communities. Check 10News Pinpoint Weather “The coast will see easterly gusts up to 35 miles per hour while the deserts will have southeasterly winds up to 25 miles per hour,” said 10News Meteorologist Megan Parry. San Diego County’s mountain towns saw the strongest gusts of 91 miles per hour in Hellhole Canyon, 88 miles per hour in Fremont Canyon, and 77 miles per hour in Sill Hill. The Santa Ana conditions could end by next Monday with a chance of showers in the forecast, Parry said. Not sure video does it justice but it sure is windy up here east of Alpine. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Six San Diego inmates had to be treated with an overdose drug this month after deputies say they were showing signs of a fentanyl overdose. The San Diego Sheriff's Department (SDSO) said the overdoses happened just after 4 p.m. on Dec. 4 at San Diego Central Jail. The six inmates were given various doses of the drug Naloxone to reverse the effects of their overdoses. All inmates regained alertness and were taken to a nearby hospital for care.Deputies searched the cells of the affected inmates and discovered pills possibly laced with fentanyl, according to SDSO.The department says it's taking several approaches to stop drugs from entering jails, including x-ray body scanners, screening of visitors who may be smuggling drugs into jails, and overdose awareness and contraband detection techniques.SDSO says that about 70% to 80% of people entering their custody are using drugs at the time of arrest or have committed a crime during drug use. 974

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego State University’s oldest known alumnus passed away just 17 days after celebrating his 107th birthday, the campus reported.According to school officials, William “Bill” Vogt is among the first students to set foot on the campus at Campanile Drive in 1931."It was during the Great Depression at a time when Edward L. Hardy, whom Vogt once recalled as “very low key,” was the school’s second president," the school said.SDSU said Vogt completed his "business degree course work in late 1934 when San Diego State had no official commencement ceremony for mid-year degree completion. Although he said he requested a diploma, he could not recall having ever received one."In 2018, SDSU President Adela de la Torre honored his request and presented Vogt with a diploma 83 years later during a ceremony. The school said that Vogt was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War and retired in 1970 with the rank of commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve."A notice of his death issued by the Navy said he enlisted in the Reserve with a rank of Yeoman First Class in 1940 and was called up Dec. 8, 1941, the day after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. He served as an intelligence officer at several locations, including California and Washington, D.C. While living in Seattle, he was called back to active duty upon the outbreak of the Korean War," the school said.Vogt's son described his father as a role model, best friend, and hero, but also as a loyal Aztecs basketball fan.“He saw 90 years of SDSU basketball and this was the best team in 90 years,” Bob Vogt said. “The team meant a lot to him." 1641

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Some San Diego Police Department officers are being isolated as they await test results for coronavirus, according to SDPD Chief David Nisleit. Those officers were exposed to the virus and are currently under isolation, Chief Nisleit told 10News anchor Jim Patton. It's unclear how many officers are currently being isolated.“We’re waiting for results on five officers, those officers are isolated right now," Chief Nisleit said. “We’ve had some officers’ tests come back negative, so that’s great news; we are being impacted by it.”RELATED:San Diego COVID-19 Tracker: County reports second deathINTERACTIVE MAP: Confirmed coronavirus cases in San Diego CountyNisleit added, "We have some officers who are showing symptoms and we have some who are isolated because they've been exposed."Nisleit said officers have been practicing social distancing during the current pandemic when out in public. If an arrest or contact with someone must be made, officers put on masks, goggles, and gloves. A police spokesperson added that officers have been self-reporting possible exposure, both on-duty and off-duty. A medical expert then determines if they should be tested. "We're taking great care of them, absolutely," Nisleit added.Precautions are being taken by law enforcement across the county. A spokesperson from Oceanside Police says they're doing more phone or online reports when possible. Dispatch and officers are also asking more questions about cold and flu-like symptoms.A video from the Chula Vista Department tells the public, "We may ask you to wear a mask."Starting Friday, Chula Vista Police will be taking an extra step. A spokesperson says they'll strongly suggest officers wear protective equipment for all interactions with the public closer than six feet. The San Diego Sheriff's Department, along with El Cajon, Chula Vista, Oceanside, and Carlsbad Police say none of their officers has tested positive. San Diego County reported Thursday that 341 residents have tested positive for coronavirus. So far, three deaths have resulted from the virus locally. 2096
