SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Some places of worship around San Diego County appear to be planning to continue holding services on their property despite the state’s order regarding indoor operations.On Monday, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced pandemic-related restrictions for certain businesses and activities, and places of worship were included on California’s list.Via a Wednesday evening livestream, Kearny Mesa-based Awaken Church broadcasted their service in which there were people in attendance. On their website, Awaken Church promoted in-person women’s prayer meetings held at each of their campuses.ABC 10News asked church leaders to clarify the meeting, and an Awaken pastor said they were holding a prayer protest.At the church’s Balboa Avenue campus, a disclaimer is posted on doors that reads, in part: “By entering this building where COVID-19 virus may possibly exist, despite efforts and attempts at utilizing and employing CDC Public Health Guidelines, you take full responsibility for the decision to attend our services and activities.”A viewer brought a Facebook post by Lighthouse Baptist Church to ABC 10News’ attention. In the post, the Lemon Grove church says, in part: “We are aware of the current mandates of our Governor and County. But, by God’s grace will continue with their current schedule of live worship services on the property.”It’s unclear whether those services will be inside or outside.ABC 10News reached out to both churches for further comment, but neither have returned calls as of late Thursday morning.A woman who asked not to be identified told ABC 10News that her church also invited her back. She said she believes the places of worship that stay open are doing more harm than good.“They want things to be back to normal, everyone does. But they aren’t being realistic about it. I think they need to wait this out and be patient and slow the spread and it will be safer for parishioners, and the community and U.S. at large,” the woman said.As far as the enforcement of the state’s order, if the place of worship falls under San Diego County jurisdiction, it will be up to the sheriff’s department.If it’s within the city, it will be up to the police agency in that city to enforce. 2227

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Some men are sharing their story of an unlikely redemption after police spotted them spray-painting graffiti on a street in El Cajon.Gripped by the message of the recent protests, Dre, Dan, and Gee did something they've never done before. The three, all of them artists, ended up on Heart Drive with spray paint."Just wanted to put up something, so when people drive by, it says 'love.' It says 'peace,'" said Dan."We are about art. People need to see the message," said Dre.Around 2 a.m., El Cajon Police Sergeant Mike Murphy pulled up to the three, before two more officers arrived. The three friends prepared to be arrested. Sgt. Murphy surveyed what they painted: peace signs, the words 'BLM' and 'Justice For Floyd.'He talked to them about the impact of graffiti. The men apologized. There would be no arrest. The three friends offered to fix it and Sgt. Murphy said he would help."That's a good feeling. It's the same as the message we were out there painting that night," said Dan.That same day, the men turned up with paint and rollers and together with Sgt. Murphy, they covered the spray paint. The three men decided they would funnel their passions into an art installation with the theme of unity. Sgt. Murphy agreed to help them find a venue for it. Dre and Dan say their encounter with him shows them that police can be part of the solution."Not every cop is out to kill black people. There are good cops out there, and I think people need to start understanding and noticing," said Dre.After the art piece is complete, Sgt. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Speaking from the charred landscape ravaged by one of California's largest current wildfires, Gov. Gavin Newsom strongly asserted that more has to be done to battle the "climate emergency."Newsom toured the devastation at a park in Oroville, Calif., that was burned by the North Complex fire. Since the fire began on Aug. 18, the fire has burned 252,534 acres through Plumas, Butte, and Yuba counties and is 23% contained.It's one of 28 major wildfires burning across California, according to CAL FIRE.During his tour, the governor shot back at the debate over climate change and pledge to continue the state's efforts at lower carbon emissions. Newsom cited August being the state's hottest month in state history and annual drought conditions throughout the state."I'm a little exhausted that we have to continue to debate this issue. This is a climate, damn, emergency. This is real. And it's happening," Newsom said on Friday. "This is the perfect storm. It is happening in unprecedented ways. Year in and year out. "And you can exhaust yourself with your ideological 'BS' by saying, 'well, 100 years ago, we should've done this or that.' All that may be true. And I'm not going to suggest for a second that the forest management practices in the state of California over a century-plus have been ideal. But that's one point. But it's not 'the' point."Newsom said the current "mega-fires" are fueled by "mega-droughts" that have impacted the state."There's something else going on, not just bad practices over the last century related to forestry," Newsom said.Friday, Newsom signed AB2147 into law, which will allow inmates from the state's inmate firefighter program to become firefighters after completing their prison time. CAL FIRE trains minimum-security prison inmates who volunteer to perform the same work as their crews. Volunteer inmates also perform conservation and community service projects while not fighting fires, according to CAL FIRE. According to the Associated Press, inmates are paid per hour while on the frontlines and per day when they're not on duty. Inmates normally have their sentences reduces while participating in the program, the AP says.Previously, volunteer inmates were not eligible to become firefighters after serving time. 2299

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police say the man found shot behind a Midway District strip mall was the victim of an armed robbery.Police received a call on Wednesday just after 6 p.m. over shots fired and a vehicle collision in the 3600 block of Midway Dr. Officers arrived to find a grey Acura had crashed into a retaining wall behind several businesses. Inside, the driver had been shot at least once.The man, identified as 18-year-old Eduardo Salguero of San Diego, was taken to a nearby hospital but died of his injuries.Investigators say they've learned that Salguero had arranged to purchase an item through Snapchat. When he arrived to meet the sellers, two Hispanic males entered his vehicle. During the meeting, one of the suspects pulled out a handgun and the transaction turned into an armed robbery.Multiple gunshots were fired inside the vehicle, police said. The two suspects then fled on foot. Police only described the suspects as Hispanic males, between 20-30 years old, who were wearing dark clothing at the time.
