Prosecutors say multimillionaire Jeffrey Epstein's wealth makes him a risk to flee the country or to tamper with the investigation, so he should be detained ahead of his sex trafficking trial. But Epstein's lawyers say he has scrupulously followed the terms of his 2008 plea deal over the past decade-plus and is no longer a danger to anyone. They argued he should be allowed to live pre-trial at his Manhattan mansion -- a home that prosecutors say would be a "gilded cage."The two arguments came to a head in federal court on Monday for Epstein's bail hearing, where each side was given 20 minutes to lay out their positions.US District Court Judge Richard M. Berman said he plans to make a ruling on Thursday. A pre-trial services report filed on Monday recommended that Epstein be detained, Berman said in court Monday.Epstein, 66, has pleaded not guilty to charges of sex trafficking of minors and conspiracy to engage in sex trafficking of minors in alleged incidents between 2002 and 2005.The indictment says that he paid girls as young as 14 to have sex with him at his Upper East Side home and his estate in Palm Beach, Florida, worked with employees and associates to lure the girls to his residences and even paid some of his victims to recruit other girls for him to abuse. The hedge fund manager was arrested July 6 at Teterboro Airport in New Jersey aboard his private jet, which had just landed from Paris. He is currently being held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center, a federal detention center in lower Manhattan.Monday's bail hearing has provided further details about Epstein's past and the extent of his wealth, both of which are shrouded in mystery. In court, prosecutors said that investigators going through Epstein's possessions found an expired foreign passport issued in the 1980s that showed Epstein's photo under a different name. The passport also listed his residence as Saudi Arabia. In addition, prosecutors said they had obtained financial records confirming that Epstein is worth more than 0 million, including a single account with over 0 million. Epstein's defense submitted a financial summary of his assets under seal, and Judge Berman said he was inclined to make it public.Defense highlights 14-year clean recordShortly after his arrest, federal agents executing a search warrant of Epstein's mansion in New York seized a "vast trove" of lewd photographs of young-looking women or girls, prosecutors said in a court filing. That "substantial collection of photographic trophies," prosecutors argued in their bail filing, demonstrated the ongoing danger he poses to the public and is a key reason why he should be detained. The federal charges in the indictment are similar to those Epstein avoided more than a decade ago when he signed a plea agreement with federal prosecutors in Miami. As part of the agreement, he pleaded guilty to two state prostitution charges in 2008, served 13 months in prison and registered as a sex offender.A November 2018 3009

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is proposing a condensed, two-day calendar for opening arguments in President Donald Trump's impeachment trial, ground rules that are raising objections from Democrats on the eve of the landmark proceedings. The Republican leader outlined the process in a four-page resolution that will be voted on as one of the first orders of business when senators convene Tuesday. It also pushes off any votes on witnesses until later in the process, rather than up front, as Democrats had demanded. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer expressed his opposition to McConnell's proposals late Monday. "We will be able to introduce amendments and we will introduce a whole series of amendments for witnesses, for documents and other ways to straighten out what McConnell has done and make it a real trial," Schumer said. Each side will be given 24 hours over the course of two days to make their arguments. That means that opening arguments will conclude by the weekend. Arguments are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. ET on Wednesday. It appears that each day's sessions will not end until 1 a.m., at the earliest. Decorum rules dictate that senators will not be permitted to talk or use electronic devices during arguments. After each side makes their arguments, the legal teams for and against convicting Trump will be questioned for up to 16 hours each. 1388

Super-loyal customers who use Starbucks' membership program account for about 40% of sales at the company's US stores. Now Starbucks is taking steps it believes will make the program more attractive.Starting on April 16, the coffee company's rewards members in the United States and Canada will start earning rewards sooner and have more options when redeeming points. For customers who use a Starbucks rewards credit or debit card, points won't expire. (They still expire after about six months for other members.)Digital rewards programs are a way for companies such as Starbucks to increase loyalty and learn more about their customers. The update is designed to bring even more people into the program by offering more choice. The current rewards program works like this: Customers get two points, or stars, for every dollar they spend. Customers need to hit 300 stars within one year in order to start qualifying for rewards. Once they qualify, they can get a free drink or free food for every 125 stars. If they hold on to the points until they reach, say, 250, they can redeem the points for two free drinks, two food items or one of each. The new system lets people get different rewards for different amounts of stars, and starts at a lower tier. Members can cash in 25 stars for an extra espresso shot, dairy substitute or another flavor pump. For 50, they get coffee or tea or a bakery item, and so on.More flexibility can serve more types of customer behaviors, Matthew Ryan, the company's chief marketing officer, told CNN Business."There are people who like to spend at very low levels, and there are people who like to hoard a lot of points," Ryan said. "Right now, we have just the middle point of the range."Starbucks launched its rewards programs in 2009, but has changed how it works over the years. Notably, in 2016, Starbucks 1857
