SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police said a mother was drunk and driving her children when she crashed going the wrong way on a Rancho Bernardo street Monday morning.The crash happened about 4:30 a.m. on Camino del Norte, just west of Interstate 15. The woman drove her Chevy SUV east in the westbound lanes of the road, hitting a man in a Jeep Liberty.Officers told 10News the mother, who is in her 30s, had her 8-year-old child in the backseat with her 2-year-old child in a car seat. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Red Cross Volunteers are stepping up to help the many communities at risk of Hurricane Dorian's wrath.So far 20 volunteers have been assigned to the disaster, 18 will be on the ground, and two are working remotely.John Stone is deploying Tuesday evening to South Carolina, he's responded to over 20 disasters."You catch the bug, I mean you're helping people recover from a natural disaster, every disaster is different," said Stone. Stone says this deployment is more personal; his daughter lives in Charleston."I emphasize with her to have a plan, be ready to go, it's my grandchildren you're dealing with, I want you to be safe," said Stone.At any moment, the local Red Cross could be asked to send more volunteers. Hundreds of hospital staff lined the hallways to cheer for and high-five a donor as they’re wheeled into surgery. Hayley Gibbons got to experience the Hero Walk. "I don't think I could've gotten into the operating room on a bigger high. There's no way you could've doubted that you wanted to save someone after going down that hall,” Gibbons said. Gibbons underwent surgery and is doing well. She says she’s excited to give someone a second chance at life even if she never gets to meet that person. 606

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Small hands eagerly grabbing candy aren't always paired with young minds showing good judgment. That was certainly the case in San Diego County on Halloween night, when surveillance video captured trick-or-treaters behaving badly.“Frustrating and really disappointing,” said Eastlake resident K.C. Helman.Helman returned home from trick-or-treating with his kids Thursday night to find his candy bowl gone.Video showed two costumed kids walking up to the bowl. One of them grabbed it and they both ran away.It wasn’t the only trick on Halloween night. 10News gathered a collection of videos posted by residents victimized by some frightful behavior.The candy thieves are a far cry from the generous South Bay boy who was caught on camera in 2017 pouring his own candy into an empty bowl so other children wouldn't be disappointed.Lawrence Malot, then 15, explained what motivated him to share his candy.He's not the only good example in San Diego. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Six San Diego State University students have been diagnosed with mumps in the last week, according to the San Diego County Health and Human Services agency. All six of the students live off campus at BLVD63, an apartment complex not affiliated with the university. “These six mumps cases represent a small outbreak of this highly contagious viral disease,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “The best way to prevent mumps is by getting the measles, mumps and rubella, or MMR vaccine.”RELATED: San Diego State student diagnosed with mumpsAs a result of the outbreak, the agency will be conducting free vaccination clinics at the apartment complex from 3 to 6 p.m. on February 27 and 28 for BLVD63 residents and SDSU students wishing to be immunized. Two doses of the vaccine are recommended for all SDSU students who haven’t already completed the series. A third dose is also being recommended for anyone who lives or works at BLVD63. “Student Health Services (SHS) was able to quickly respond to this public health concern and worked to isolate these students, as well as provide initial information to our campus community,” said Libby Skiles, SDSU's SHS Director. “In collaboration with the county, our team is supporting the impacted students and working to proactively protect the overall health and wellbeing of our community.”The cases come amid an uptick in local cases in recent months, health officials say. In 2019, San Diego County recorded 66 cases of mumps compared to just nine in 2018.
