A former Texas police officer was sentenced to 15 years in prison Wednesday for the shooting death of an unarmed black teen last year in the Dallas suburbs.A jury convicted former Balch Springs Officer Roy Oliver, 38, of murder on Tuesday for killing 15-year-old Jordan Edwards. Jurors returned to court Wednesday for his sentencing, where prosecutors sought at least 60 years, while the defense argued for 20 years or less.Dallas County District Attorney Faith Johnson called Oliver a "killer in blue" who violated his oath to protect citizens. Her colleague, Michael Snipes, made the reference to Mr. Hyde, the violent side of Dr. Jekyll in Robert Louis Stevenson's novella.Defense attorney Bob Gill argued that his client, who fired into a vehicle carrying Jordan, had to decide quickly how best to protect his partner. 830

A Georgia high school teacher is under investigation after he was filmed telling a student he "might" shoot the kid in the head.Paul Hagan, a white physics teacher at Rockdale Career Academy, was filmed ranting against an unidentified black student, according to Atlanta's WSB-TV."Don't smile at me, man," Hagan is heard telling the student. "That's how people like you get shot."In the video, which WSB shared on Facebook, Hagan goes on to say, "I gotta bet by the time you're 21 somebody's gonna put a bullet right through your head. OK? And it might be me the one who does it."The video was apparently shot by another student.Officials at Rockdale Career Academy are investigating the incident. It's unclear if Hagan will face disciplinary action.Clint Davis is a reporter for the Scripps National Desk. Follow him on Twitter @MrClintDavis. A former DACA recipient who had previously claimed he was wrongly deported was arrested on Monday night after attempting to illegally enter the US from Mexico, according to US Customs and Border Protection.Juan Manuel Montes Bojorquez, 23, was seen by Remote Video Surveillance Systems operators crossing the border a few miles east of Calexico, California, according to Border Patrol. The agency said he ran about 200 yards north of the border fence, laid down on the ground, and then stood up and ran again as agents approached him.He was arrested and booked into the Imperial County Jail on pending charges of re-entry after removal, Customs and Border Protection said.He was arrested under the same charge in February, CBP said, which was when Montes claimed he had been wrongfully deported."Our agents witnessed and arrested Mr. Bojorquez making an illegal entry into the United States for the second time this year," said Assistant Chief Patrol Agent David S. Kim. "Border Patrol Agents will always stop, detain, and arrest anyone making an illegal entry into the country irrespective of their immigration or citizenship status."Montes' earlier lawsuit had been a flashpoint in the Trump administration's policies toward the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, known as DACA. The program, which began under former President Barack Obama, provides protections to undocumented immigrants who were brought to the US as children.Advocates seized on Montes losing his protections and being deported as an example of the administration targeting DACA recipients, though Montes' claims about being wrongfully deported have thus far been unsubstantiated.  1678

A California coffee shop refused service to a customer last week after he insulted a Muslim woman and her headscarf.According to KTLA-TV, the video was shot inside of a Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf store in Riverside, California on Friday. The video opens with a man standing in line for coffee."I said, 'Is this Halloween or something?" the man says."Why did you say that?" the woman filming asks."Why wouldn't I? Why wouldn't I?"The woman filming the encounter then pans over to show herself wearing a niqāb, a Muslim headscarf worn by women that covers all but a woman's eyes."What's wrong with me?" the woman asks again."I don't know, you tell me what's wrong with you," the man says.  705

A Las Vegas family is dealing with a bunny multiplying nightmare. There are so many bunnies they have to divvy them up and block them off in different rooms of their house to stop them from reproducing.Kerryann Curtin and her family got Thumper, the male bunny, a couple years ago. More recently, they were gifted what they thought was another boy bunny."They swore it was a boy, the breeder said it was a boy!" said Kerryann's sister Kathleen Curtin-Coble.But to their surprise Brandon the new bunny was a girl. They changed her name to Brandy.Brandy had nine bunnies September 14, 2017. She had seven more a month later and seven more a month after that. That's 23 bunnies in just three months."Even before you know they had babies, they are pregnant again," said Curtin-Coble.On March 22, one of Brandy's baby bunnies had six babies and a few weeks later had three more. The Curtin family has adopted out 21 bunnies on their own but they need help with at least 11 more. They've asked just about everyone for help but no one can help them."We've called Arizona, Utah, California, and every sanctuary in Nevada that we could find," said Curtin-Coble. "We can not find anyone that can take them."Many of the bunny rescues are overwhelmed with hundreds of bunnies already after massive rescue work that was done at a nearby dumpsite. If you are interested in adopting one of the bunnies, email Kerryann at kerryann.curtin@hotmail.com. 1438
