SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Each year around this time, we marvel as gray whales make their way from Alaska down to Baja, Mexico, to give birth. However, this year's migration started late. "This year, with the migration being so late, a lot of the moms aren't actually making it to the lagoon before they give birth. So we're seeing a lot of these pregnant females giving birth on the migration this year," said Captain Domenic Biagini, founder of Gone Whale Watching San Diego.While the migration is late, Biagini says the whales look much healthier than last year, when many died. "Likely these whales spent a little longer feeding this year to make up for what they didn't get last year, and with less sea ice than normal, they're able to actually go further north looking for food, which then also makes the migration longer," said Captain Dom. Biagini says the calves aren't strong enough to dive, so he's already seen close calls with private boaters speeding by. "The problem is a lot of these grays, especially the moms with babies, are intentionally trying to keep a low profile and people aren't realizing that they're there as they're flying through thee areas. So it's really crucial to be conscious of your speed and surroundings during gray whale season," said Biagini.He says while the newborns are more vulnerable, the moms do a good job keeping a low-profile.They should arrive at their destination in a week or two. 1433

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Fernanda Whitworth watched her husband Ralph battle cancer for years."He couldn't swallow, he couldn't talk or basically eat. So he lost 45 pounds, it's literally barbaric."Ralph Whitworth was diagnosed with HPV-related tongue cancer in 2013. It eventually claimed his life in 2016.Before Ralph died, the Whitworths began a quest to find a cure. It's a mission Fernanda has carried on."I feel like we are so close; we're on the tipping point of finding a cure," she explained. The nonprofit they founded in San Diego, The Immunotherapy Foundation, is dedicated to funding the most promising research on HPV-driven cancers."This is a huge problem. Not only does HPV account for six different cancer types, almost 100 percent of cervical cancers and in men, now those instances are rising for head and neck cancer, " said Dr. Ezra Cohen, who is the Associate Director for Translational Science at UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center. The Centers for Disease Control estimate that about 14 million people get a new HPV infection every year in the U.S. Nearly all men and women who have ever had sex get at least one type of genital HPV at some time in their lives. The Immunotherapy Foundation has focused its efforts on three categories:  1321

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- For students in the 3D printing club at Westview High in Poway whose goal was never to hit the 'print' button, they've come a long way."It feels really amazing to know the 3D printing club is helping those who are in need."Victor Ku is president for Westview High's 3D printing club that started up this past year.When the club started, their mission was purely educational. They wanted to create a curriculum and teach people the basics of 3D printing because they didn't have the money to actually print anything."It can be very expensive and super confusing at first which is why we believe all these limitations shouldn’t restrict one from getting the opportunity to learn its such an amazing tool."Then when March came around, Victor said "we were back to square one. We didn’t really know what to do and we realized we need to quickly pivot towards the communities needs and in this case it was face shields or personal protective equipment."That's when the team of young and aspiring engineers got to work and finally hit 'print'."We took a small break and waited for all the design and the actual professional engineers to perfect the design before we started mass producing these face shields," Victor said.They've donated about 400 face shields to five different organizations, and are some of the youngest people to make a difference."We’ve distributed them to hospitals, hair salons and post offices to name a few. That little bit could definitely help save any lives."With things easing up, Victor said they want to widen their distribution list. The ceremony, which will take place in Mira Mesa on Friday afternoon, will be emceed by ABC 10News reporter Melissa Mecija.The 49-year-old Jo Koy, whose real name is Joseph Herbert, has established himself as one of the most popular comedians in the world in recent years, with several Netflix specials, sold-out comedy tours, and other media endeavors under his belt.In a statement, Cate, a second-generation Filipino-American, said: “Jo Koy is iconic and a trailblazer. His homage to the Philippines has reached the lives of millions of people worldwide. Filipino cuisine, culture, and arts are flourishing in District 6, and I am excited to celebrate Jo Koy and recognize his accomplishments.”According to Cate’s office, 1 in every 3 District 6 residents is of Asian-American descent. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Drone video of a Pacific Beach man's search and rescue of his blind pet chameleon plays out like the perfect Hollywood action sequence.Vince Kay Vera says his pet chameleon, "Pete," is temporarily blind due to an infection. "He doesn't normally act like this. He's usually hunting, and hiding, and cruising, but right now he's just roaming aimlessly because he can't see," Vera says.RELATED: Blind San Diego puppy, guide sibling capture hearts around the globeBut that temporary struggle didn't stop the sly Pete from escaping his outdoor enclosure and ending up on the roof of Vera's Pacific Beach condo."So that's all he wants to do all day long, just go straight up," Vera laughed.When Vera noticed Pete was gone, he grabbed his drone and checked the few places he thought Pete could go.RELATED: Coronado gym creates 'March Madness' acts of kindness challenge"I thought it was gonna be hard to find him, but he was just blind wandering around up there you know," Vera said.Video shows Pete perched on the roof, in all his bright neon green splendor.
