A routine trip to Walmart turned into a nightmare for a Maryland woman, but now she is using her negative experience to help others. Cynthia Morales and her boyfriend Linwood Boyd, who are both blind, were at the self-checkout lane at the Walmart in Owings Mills, Maryland in late July 2017 when they asked an employee for help. While the self-serve kiosks do issue some spoken prompts, it was still a challenge for Morales and Boyd to check out. A Walmart employee helped the pair finish their transaction, but unbeknownst to Morales and Boyd, they requested in cashback, which the employee pocketed. Because no audio prompt gave them a total of their transaction, the couple had no idea this happened until the machine told them to take the cash. Unable to check their receipt, the couple asked someone outside of the store to read them it and discovered they had been charged the extra . The money was returned, but Morales and Boyd decided to shop at another nearby Walmart from then on. Because of their experience at the Walmart, they are teaming up with Melissa Sheeder — another blind Marylander — the National Federation of the Blind (NFB) and the National Federation of the Blind Maryland to sue Walmart under the Americans with Disabilities Act. “What happened to Cindy Morales is an extreme example of what can occur when companies like Walmart deploy inaccessible self-checkout or point-of-sale technology,” said Mark Riccobono, President of the National Federation of the Blind. “The real problem is that Walmart has decided to treat blind customers differently from sighted customers. Walmart’s refusal to deploy readily available technology to give blind shoppers the same choice sighted shoppers have — whether to check ourselves out or visit a cashier —makes us second-class customers. That is unlawful and unacceptable.”The lawsuit is asking for the Maryland federal district court to order Walmart to make its self-service checkout kiosks fully accessible to blind shoppers. The NFB says they have offered to work with Walmart to make their kiosks accessible but they declined the offer. Walmart officials released the following statement regarding the lawsuit: 2276

A new study has found that those who drink moderate amounts of alcohol or coffee lived longer than those who didn’t, reports the Chicago Tribune. The research was led by University of California neurologist Claudia Kawas who tracked 1,700 nonagenarians enrolled in the 90+ study, which began in 2003.According to researchers, those who drank roughly two glasses of beer or wine a day were 18 percent less likely to experience premature death. The findings mean that, according to the research, drinking alcohol increased longevity more than exercise. The study found that participants who exercised 15 to 45 minutes a day cut their risk of early death by 11 percent. And good news for coffee lovers. Participants who drank two cups of coffee a day also increased longevity by 10 percent. The study also found that people who were overweight in their 70s lived longer than normal or underweight people. 904

A Marin County, California doctor says his research into medical marijuana has identified a compound that can help diabetes patients.Dr. Michael Moskowitz, President of Bay Area Pain Medical Associates, says it’s not about getting high, it’s about getting well – and he thinks he’s on to something.Moskowitz believes he has identified a rare component of marijuana called THCV that he says is helping one of his diabetic patients – a patient who’s blood sugar level varies between 50 and 1000 in a single day.“It’s not clear, but it appears that, on a preliminary basis, for the first month that he did that, the extent of how much he varied seems to be less,” said Moskowitz.THCV is found in a strain of marijuana called Black Beauty. It’s leaves are much darker than most marijuana.Although she doesn’t have diabetes, Nina Murphy has chronic neck and back pain she used to treat with traditional pain medication. “I was a little skeptical. I haven’t used marijuana before so it’s not something I was just going to jump into,” said Murphy. “I’m extremely pleased and I hope to off my meds in the next couple months so, yeah!”Moskowitz says more study needs to be done with Black Beauty. “Just having the opportunity to work with something that clearly has therapeutic value, but figuring out how to optimize that and make that work the best for the most number of people is very exciting,” he said.Moskowitz will travel to Miami next week to speaking at a conference to discuss his findings. 1500

A new beer can with the message "poll workers needed" will be sold in four Kentucky breweries to recruit poll workers for the upcoming general election. After a shortage of poll workers in Kentucky's June primary meant limited polling locations, the partnership between Secretary of State Michael Adams and the Kentucky Guild of Brewers is intended to reach people who may have never considered working election day."Everybody needs to be out there voting every single year, but especially this year," said Bailey Johnson, marketing and sustainability manager for Pivot Brewing in Lexington. "We think that if we can help in any way, shape, or form we're going to do it."Pivot will sell its vintage cider in the cans, that features a link to govoteky.com and a QR code that when scanned on a smartphone will take the user directly to govoteky.com, where they can sign up to be a poll worker and request an absentee ballot. The campaign is intended to reach a younger generation, as poll workers tend to be older but are particularly at risk from the coronavirus."It's really just trying to get people to step up because it's not something you think about doing every year," she said.Three other Kentucky breweries are participating in the campaign:Monnik Beer Co. A record number of unaccompanied immigrant children, about 14,000, are currently in US custody, a Health and Human Services spokesman said Friday. The spokesman, Mark Weber, said the additional requirements put in place by the Trump administration to "reduce risk and increase safety" for immigrant children contributed to the high number."We are taking all possible steps to protect children in an environment with many bad actors," Weber said. "We are balancing speed with safety and will err on the side of safety."The Houston Chronicle earlier reported the figure.Last spring, the Trump administration heightened scrutiny of adults coming forward to take care of the immigrant children, and Immigrations and Customs Enforcement now conducts exhaustive screenings of the adults. But many of them are undocumented themselves and fearful of ICE obtaining their information. These Trump administration policies are likely keeping these children in custody.Lawsuits have also accused the administration of extending children's stays, including allegedly holding them intentionally until they turn 18 and are eligible for stricter adult detention. Many of the children do have a legal right to stay in the US, but the legal process can take years.Weber said the high number was also due to the 50,000 Department of Homeland Security referrals of unaccompanied children this year, which he said is the third-highest annual total. DHS referred 59,170 unaccompanied children to HHS in fiscal year 2016, according to a HHS fact sheet, and 40,810 in fiscal year 2017.The number of children in custody changes daily because of referrals by DHS and HHS releases of children to sponsors, Weber said. Most of these children arrived in the US unaccompanied. Children separated under Trump's so-called "zero tolerance" policy account for less than 200 of the reported 14,000. CNN reported earlier this month there are still 171 children separated from their families, four months after a judge ordered the US government to reunite the undocumented immigrant families it had split up at the border, according to court documents. In 2016, the monthly average of the number of children in HHS's care ranged from just over 4,000 to over 9,000. 2230
