SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego Police officer is showing his gratitude this holiday season after an incredible display of heroism. It was at the end of his graveyard shift when he heard panic over the scanner."It's moving pretty quick, ooohh standby. It went over the… it went over the cliff. I was not in pursuit. Send medics!" a San Diego Police Lieutenant said over the police scanner.San Diego Police K9 handler, Jonathan Wiese, noticed that this incident was just around the corner to where he was.RELATED:Officer rescues toddlers after father drives off Sunset CliffsPolice: Man drives off Sunset Cliffs with twin daughters in truckOn the morning of June 13, 2020, a suicidal man had driven through a guard rail at Sunset Cliffs. His truck plunged into the ocean. Inside were his twin 2-year-old daughters."We didn't even come up with a plan. I just pretty much said 'I'm going,'" Wiese remembered. He rappelled down a 30-foot drop, MacGyvering a rescue rope with his 100-foot dog leash. He says adrenaline, police training, but mostly his father-instinct kicked in."I had a two-year-old daughter at home, so when I'm looking in the water, it's her who is floating in the water," Wiese said. "So now it's just, 'OK, you're getting down this cliff!'"RELATED: San Diego officer honored for heroic acts in Poway synagogue shootingThe husband and father of two swam to the crash site and hoisted the girls to safety. His brave actions have since been recognized many times. He says it is a day he will always remember."I am most grateful this year, knowing that those two little girls have a second chance at life," Wiese said.Another unforgettable day for Wiese is April 27, 2019. He was on his way to get lunch with his family when he heard an active shooter call on the scanner. Moments later, he spotted the suspect. Without backup, he convinced the Poway Synagogue shooter to surrender. Officer Wiese took him into custody.Wiese says his competitive spirit motivates him to be a better version of himself every day, to show resilience and strength for his community."If you feel like you're going to win, then incidents like this, like at Sunset Cliffs, 'I'm going to win this incident. I'm going to save these girls in this man.' At the synagogue, 'I'm going to win. I'm going to go home to my family, and he is going to go to jail. and the community is going to be safe.'" SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego woman who was shot at the Route 91 music festival in Las Vegas is making great strides in her recovery.Tina Frost and her boyfriend were with eight friends when Stephen Paddock opened fire. Frost was the only one of her group who was shot. The bullet went into her eye.Her family says the recovery has been difficult but that she continues to power forward with her therapies.Frost’s mother posted an update on the GoFundMe page indicating Frost has walked without assistance, thrown a ball, baked cookies, and painted an eye patch for herself.Amy Klinger, a close family friend, says Frost's strength and resilience is no surprise."She is not going to let anything get in her way of getting back to her normal, happy, and healthy life," said Klinger.  "It was so amazing, I walked into the room and she was talking with her physical therapist and because her sentences were so clear, I did forget for a minute she had not been speaking."A lifelong soccer player, Frost has even been able to kick a soccer ball to her dad in the hallway."The fact that they did say at the very beginning, let's see what happens in a year, and it's only less than five weeks out and she's walking and she's talking, she's just, the progress has been amazing and is a testament to who she is," said Klinger.Klinger believes the worldwide support and power of positivity has been a factor in the healing, for both Frost and her family."Just knowing there's this enormous community, Team Tina, that's out there behind the family, it keeps their spirits up and keeps them positive because this is a lot to do deal with," said Klinger.Frost has a big surgery in the upcoming weeks where doctors will begin facial reconstruction. 1749

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A small portion of San Diego State students will return to campus next week for limited in-person classes. The university says students who are taking in-person classes are required to be tested for COVID-19 at least every 14 days. This includes both students living on-campus and those taking in-person courses.Students and instructors on campus are also required to wear a facial covering at all times (with limited exceptions), maintain physical distancing, and have their temperatures checked daily. There will be two temperature check kiosks on campus and instructors will also have the ability to check a student's temperature using a non-contact infrared thermometer.Since the fall semester started, SDSU has reported 1,134 coronavirus cases among students, including 408 on-campus students and 726 off-campus students. Ten faculty or staff and 13 visitors have also reportedly tested positive. To combat off-campus cases from rising in the surrounding College Area, the school has enforced its COVID-19 student policy on students living off-campus as well. Students or organizations found in violation of SDSU's policies, like failing to wear face coverings or attending social gatherings, could face student organization sanctions and individual disciplinary action, which may include expulsion. 1328

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego nurse who cares for "the sickest of the sick" babies will be honored Sunday for her extraordinary character.Around Rady Children's Hospital, Linda Black is known for her Scottish accent and knack for writing poems."Remember my fingers remember my toes, Remember my eyes so big and so brown, Remember the wind making my whole face frown," she read from one of her poems. This one was written for a baby she cared for who did not survive. She's worked at the hospital for 12 years and always knew she was a caretaker."I wanted to be a nurse because my grandmother had multiple sclerosis and she had several strokes, I used to help my aunt look after her," she said. She is the primary caretaker for one baby at a time. Sometimes the baby is there for weeks, sometimes for months. She found the silver lining in traumatic times, writing poems for the families tailored to their little angels, "basically saying to the families thank you for giving me the honor of looking after your child and your child made an impact on my life."She hopes the poems bring back positive memories for families in a dark time. The families overwhelmed with gratitude, often hugging her. One family whose child survived used her poem as a bucket-list and would send Black photos each time they checked something off the list. When she started writing poems for those who didn't make it, she was worried about the impact. Black was reassured when she ran into a family at a party. She cared for their baby and hadn't seen them since their baby passed. "On her phone was a picture of the grave and on the grave was the poem, it made me realize how my words meant so much," she said tearfully.Sunday she'll be honored at the March of Dimes Signature Chef's Gala for her extraordinary character."If we get donuts we're really excited. You know, donuts and bagels are the biggest gift for us, sometimes chocolate, but to get an award and to get recognized by someone who's outside of my unit it's absolutely amazing, just wow!" Black said with her hand on her heart.Black said she will continue writing poems for the families she cares for. 2149

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Serra Mesa family expecting nearly ,000 in stimulus funds in April is still waiting.Mark Perry, who is married with four children, says his family was expecting a big stimulus check. Both he and his wife still have their jobs, but the check will come in handy."Really looking forward to getting the check. I was looking at a check coming fairly quickly, a direct deposit coming of 00," said Perry.Quickly, because Perry had the same bank account for the last 18 years, his IRS refund received via direct deposit every year, including one in April. Taxpayers like Perry should have received their checks during the week of April 13th, a week which came and went for Perry."Halfway through May, I realized something is really up here," said Perry. That's when Perry started logging onto the IRS 'Check My Payment' link, over and over. Hundreds of times."I probably tried a dozen times just last night. The result is always the same," said Perry. That result was this."Got an error message. Either can't verify or don't qualify. None of those things are correct," said Perry.Perry says when he called the number designated by the IRS for 'Economic Impact Payment' questions, he got nowhere."You end up in the same loop, back in the same place where you started from. There's no one you can actually speak to," said Perry. He's written politicians, and every day, he logs onto the IRS site. And he's not alone."I know of two other people in the exact same position I am. I'm frustrated mostly with the IRS website platform, which seems broken to me," said Perry.According to the IRS, 159 million Americans have received their stimulus payments with paper checks still being mailed out in June.An IRS spokesperson told 10news they are asking for patience from the public and continue to working on getting "up to speed" with the online platform. They also declined to comment on individual taxpayers. 1926
