SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A new political party is accused of tricking some San Diego voters into joining them.San Diego Registrar of Voters' Michael Vu told 10News he has referred the matter to the District Attorney and the Secretary of State's Fraud Investigation Unit.The Common Sense Party was founded by former Republicans and is currently attempting to get the 67,000 signatures needed to appear on future ballots as an state-recognized political party. A co-founder told 10News the party hired a third-party company in San Diego to help gather the signatures.RELATED: Early voting begins in California Primary as San Diego County sends out mail ballotsHowever, as first uncovered in an investigation by 10News media partner KPBS, dozens of San Diego voters who are registered for the Common Sense Party say they did not remember signing up and, in fact, had not even heard of the party.Some said the signature gatherer told them they were signing a housing petition. Others said they were given a voter registration form that did not include a place to indicate party preference. When KPBS obtained the form that had been filed by the signature party gatherer for one of the voters, she said she hadn't made any changes. "Oh, no. This is not something I recognize. That is not my handwriting. I don't remember signing this form out," SDSU student Kameron Dollinger said.Julie Meier Wright, a well known civic and political leader who helped found the Common Sense Party, told 10News they are shocked by the accusations and are working to get to the bottom of what happened. 10News left a voice mail for the signature gathering company, but has not heard back.Vu urges all San Diegans to check their registration online before going to vote, in order to ensure that they will get the proper ballot. 1805

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego man convicted of murder will be a free man, decades before his scheduled release.Donnell Fulcher’s conviction for a Barrio Logan murder in 2006 was overturned due to changes in DNA standards, said Deputy District Attorney Hector Jimenez.On Tuesday, Fulcher pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and assault with a firearm rather than go through a third trial. The judge sentenced Fulcher to 14 years, but he received credit for time he already served.Because of that, Fulcher will be released from custody tonight or tomorrow. This result comes after the San Diego County District Attorney’s Conviction Review Unit took a second look at cases involving DNA mixtures, meaning more than one DNA source is found in a sample. Fulcher’s case relied heavily on this type of evidence.The top forensic science group that analyzes DNA released guidelines that are now more conservative, which affected Fulcher’s case. Earlier this year, the District Attorney’s office agreed to give Fulcher a new trial.“We still believe that we have the right guy, but we lost confidence in the conviction so we wanted to give the defendant a chance to have a new trial if he wanted. He chose to plead guilty instead, so at the end of the day, I believe justice was done,” Jimenez said. Fulcher has always maintained his innocence.“I don’t think you can put any limit on the happiness that going free can have for someone who’s serving a life sentence. He is very, very happy. His family is very happy. This is really a joyous moment for all of them,” said Fulcher’s defense attorney Knut Johnson.This would have been Fulcher’s third trial. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego family just got bigger thanks to results from a recently taken DNA test.Sita Brooke and her brother, Odie, met their sister Eva Knight for the first time Friday. Brooke's father, Jim, was also on hand to meet his daughter.Brooke told 10News she purchased a DNA kit from Ancestry.com for her parents last Christmas to learn more about her family's origins. Knight, from Arizona, had also taken a DNA test recently.A parental match popped up for both of them.Brooke's dad served for 33 years in the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Trinidad at one point, where he met Knight's mother. And the sister's have even more in common. Knight is also originally from San Diego before moving to Arizona.The family members are now enjoying their newly discovered connections. 800

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A man suspected of trying to burn down an Albertson's sign in El Cajon pleaded not guilty in Superior Court Friday.Joshua Edgell Wright was arrested Wednesday after he allegedly set fire to the sign at the grocery store off Broadway. A local business owner followed him to a Smart and Final in Lakeside, where he was apprehended. Wright appeared in court via video conference and said nothing. Records show he's been charged with 16 crimes in the last three years, including for petty theft, shoplifting, and resisting arrest.Deputy District Attorney Brandon Owens declined to discuss Wright's criminal history. Judge Daniel Lamborn set bail at ,000. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A man was stabbed to death in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter early Wednesday morning, and police say one person was detained in connection with the incident.At around 2:30 a.m., San Diego police responded to reports of a stabbing in the 400 block of Fifth Avenue, near J Street.When officers arrived, they saw a man in his 40s with a stab wound on his chest lying on the ground with a woman trying to keep pressure on the injury.The victim was rushed to UC San Diego Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries.After the victim gave police a description of the attacker, officers spotted and then apprehended a man believed to be linked to the stabbing.ABC 10News learned the man was detained for questioning.SDPD Lt. Andra Brown said the incident is under investigation, but it appeared the stabbing took place following an exchange of words between the victim and his friends and another group of people. 940
