A Denver family is trying to raise million in order to cure their son with a rare genetic disease. Doctors told Amber Freed that her 2-year-old son is one of 34 people in the world to have this rare neurological genetic disease. “The disease is so rare, it doesn’t even have a name,” Freed said. “It’s called SLC6A1, because that is the gene that it effects.” The disease causes Maxwell to have trouble moving and communicating, and soon it will only get worse. “The most debilitating part of the disease will begin between the ages of 3 and 4,” Freed said. “So, we are in a fight against time.”Maxwell has a twin sister named Riley. “I noticed early on that Maxwell wasn’t progressing as much as Riley,” Freed said. “I noticed he couldn’t use his hands. The doctors told me that every baby can use their hands. That’s when I realized there was something wrong with him.”After multiple visits to the doctor, Freed was able to find a genetic specialist to give Maxwell a diagnosis. “He looked at me and said, ‘Something is very wrong with your son. I don’t know if he’s going to live,’” Freed said. “My soul was just crushed. It was a sadness I didn’t even know existed on earth. You never think something like this could happen. I left my career, and I had no other choice but to create my own miracle and to find a treatment forward to help Maxwell and all those others like him.” Freed searched for scientists trying to create a cure, which she found at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. “We’re working with diseases where kids are born with a defective gene,” said Steven Gray, an associate professor at UTSW in pediatrics. “Our approach is to replace that gene to fix the condition at the level of their DNA. We’re taking the DNA that those patients are missing and packaging that into a virus and use that virus as a molecular delivery truck to carry those genes back in their body and fix their DNA.” “It’s a rare disease, no one has ever heard of it,” Freed said. “But one rare disease messed with the wrong mother.” Freed said she has raised million to help with research for the cure and will need an additional million, in order to let Maxwell and many others continue to enjoy life. “I want Maxwell to have every opportunity that children should have in this life,” Freed said. “When he is having a good day, I just try and soak him in as much as I can. A Florida sheriff's deputy who worked at a school for children with emotional and behavioral problems is facing a felony charge after video shows him slamming a female student to the ground after she tapped his knee with her foot.Broward County Deputy Willard Miller was charged Tuesday with felony child abuse without great bodily harm for the Sept. 25 altercation. She walks away.In the silent video, Miller can be seen speaking to the girl for just over a minute from about 10 feet (3 meters) away while two women watch.He then suddenly walks toward the girl, grabs her throat and throws her to the ground.He flips her onto her stomach, puts a knee against her back and pulls her arms behind her.He then forcibly lifts her up using her pinned arms and throws her out of the room, where an investigator's report says she slammed against a wall.Tony would not say what Miller and the girl said to each other after the knee tap, but he said nothing the girl said or did justified the 38-year-old deputy's actions. Suspecting her 6-year-old daughter with autism was being abused at school, a West Virginia mother hid a recording device in her daughter's hair, court documents say. On Friday, the girl's former teacher and two former aides were arrested, the state's attorney general said. Christina Lester, the former teacher, and June Yurish and Kristin Douty, former aides, were charged with misdemeanor failure to report abuse or neglect, according to a press release from West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey. Amber Pack was concerned when her daughter Adri came home with bruises from Berkeley Heights Elementary in October. The marks appeared to be pressure bruises from tight grips, said Ben Salango, an attorney for the Pack family. Adri was nonverbal, but she would cry getting on the bus and didn't want to leave the house. It was clear she didn't want to go to school, the attorney said. Pack bought a recording device and put it in Adri's hair bun. "She was absolutely shocked by what she heard," Salango told CNN. The teacher and aides at the Martinsburg school threatened Adri and other children, telling them they would hit them in the face and knock their teeth out, and they threatened to withhold food, Salango said. "These arrests send a strong message — that child abuse will not be tolerated and must be reported," Attorney General Patrick Morrisey said in a statement. "We must continue working to ensure vulnerable children are protected, especially at school."
