A 2-year-old boy was put to bed in Virginia but was nowhere to be found in the morning, police say.Noah Tomlin was last seen around 1 a.m. Monday, in bed in his mobile home in the Buckroe Beach area of Hampton, Virginia, Hampton Police Chief Terry Sult said at a news conference. His mother reported him missing at 11:35 a.m.Police conducted multiple searches, Sult said, but could not find the boy. The flood gates are now closed in New Orleans as the city braces for Tropical Storm Barry.Authorities have warned people in low-lying parts of Louisiana to evacuate. Rescue crews and National Guard troops are stationed across the city and state, preparing to assist in boat rescues. Earlier this week, heavy rain flooded the street and it may just be a preview of what’s to come as Barry gets stronger and moves closer to land. The storm is expected to make landfall in Louisiana early Saturday. New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell urged residents and tourists to shelter in place starting at 8 p.m. CT Friday. “So, I dunno what’s gonna happen,” says New Orleans business owner Sarah Corsiatto. “I think we are gonna get a lot of water in the city.” Corsiatto says she won't leave town, but she is staying with friends to be closer to her coffee shop."I’m gonna try to be open as long as I can,” she says. She says as the storm moves in, she’ll secure her shop with tape and sandbags. Nearby, some historic French Quarter businesses are prepping for the storm by putting out sandbags. Barry could strengthen to a hurricane, but it’s not the high winds that have residents and officials worried, says Benjamin Scott, with the National Weather Service. “It's the large amount of water,” he explains. “Take a look behind me. This is the Mississippi River, already strained from a season of flooding."Scott says the number one threat will be the heavy flooding and rainfall. The Mississippi River this time of year is usually at 6 to 8 feet, but right now, the river sits at 16 feet. The forecast is calling for 15 inches of rain in the city and possibly 25 inches elsewhere. Tourists in New Orleans are taking the warnings from officials seriously. Jacques Desormiere and his friends say they aren’t taking chances. They spent the day stocking up on essentials. “Water, we have a bunch of nuts and things,” he says. “We can cook and eat without electricity.” Desormiere says he and his friends will likely wait out the storm. The Simpson family is on a mission to feed the hungry and inspire others to do the same. “The feeling alone is worth it,” said Lathiell Simpson. “So, if you haven’t done it before, just try it.” Simpson says this idea of giving came after losing a loved one. “My mother-in-law passed away and we needed to cater her funeral and didn’t have the funds to,” he said. That’s when the Simpson’s came together as a family. They bought the food, cooked the meals – everything from appetizers to entrees – even down to the desert. “After I did that and looked at the food I said, ‘I did this with just one man, one kitchen,’” Simpson said. Simpson took that mantra and created a catering company, called One Man, One Kitchen. Fast forward two years, his business has grown and his family is taking to the streets looking to feed 1,000 hungry people this June. The Simpsons cover the cost to provide for the hungry and homeless. “There’s a lot of people out there that don’t have and I don’t have either,” Simpson said. “But when God blesses me with a little extra, I figure out a way of giving it back.” Those receiving these free meals say a little bit of giving can go a long way. “It makes a difference in my life,” said one recipient. “It kind of puts me in a better position.” “It makes me feel there’s some beautiful, good people because they are trying to help the people that are very poor,” said another recipient. According to experts, tens of millions of Americans struggle with hunger and more than a quarter of those people are children. “They do it from the bottom of their heart,” said the Simpson’s oldest child. “We don’t help the homeless, we help the hungry.” The Simpson’s children say they are learning life lessons from their parents’ kindness. Adding this is about much more than meals, it’s food for the heart and the soul.“It’s not always about keeping for yourself, it’s mostly about giving to someone else,” Simpson said. “And the feeling that it gives you afterward is worth more than money.” 2029
