The Temple University Board of Trustees decided Friday to rescind the honorary degree it gave to Bill Cosby, one of its most famous alums and a former trustee. In a three-sentence statement, the university said the decision was due to his conviction Thursday on three counts of aggravated indecent assault."In 1991, based on his career achievements, Temple awarded an honorary degree to William Cosby," the statement said. "Yesterday, Dr. Cosby was found guilty by a jury of the felony of aggravated sexual assault. Today the Temple University Board of Trustees has accepted the recommendation of the University to rescind the honorary degree."Cosby graduated from Temple and had been on the Board of Trustees for 32 years until he resigned in 2014 amid accusations that he sexually assaulted dozens of women over decades."I have always been proud of my association with Temple University," Cosby said in a statement released by the university at the time. "I have always wanted to do what would be in the best interests of the university and its students. As a result, I have tendered my resignation from the Temple University Board of Trustees."Through his powerful role at Temple, he met Andrea Constand, who worked for the university's women's basketball team. Cosby was found guilty of drugging and assaulting Constand at his home outside Philadelphia in January 2004.The-CNN-Wire 1392

The United States has reached another grim milestone in the COVID-19 pandemic. The nation’s death toll has surpassed 170,000, Johns Hopkins data showed Monday morning. On Sunday alone, deaths in the U.S. rose by over 480, according to a Reuters tally, with Florida, Texas and Louisiana reporting the most fatalities. The U.S. continues to lead the world in deaths and the number of cases reported, with at least 5.4 million people diagnosed with the novel coronavirus in the country. Johns Hopkins shows the next highest country is Brazil, with over 3.3 million diagnosed and 107,000 dead.Citing a national ensemble forecast, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said last Thursday that estimates show the U.S. could reach 200,000 deaths from COVID-19 by Labor Day weekend. The head of the CDC says the pandemic could become even more dire in the months to come. Director Robert Redfield told WebMD that “this could be the worst fall, from a public health perspective, we’ve ever seen.”The reason? Redfield points to the combination of the COVID-19 surge and flu season. He said, "we're going to have COVID in the fall, we're going to have flu in the fall."The CDC continues to encourage Americans to wash their hands, socially distance themselves, wear masks, and avoid large gatherings.Click here to learn more about how the CDC recommends you protect yourself and others from the coronavirus. 1410

The Woolsey Fire is 100 percent contained, according to the most recent update from Cal Fire. The fire burned 96,949 acres across Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Three people died in the fire and three firefighters were injured. More than 1,500 structures were destroyed and 341 were damaged. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. New imagery from NASA shows a dark scar from the deadly and destructive fire, which burned near Malibu, California. The damage the fire left is still being assessed.NASA's Terra satellite was able to capture this new view of the damage through a false-color image from its Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer. The burnt areas are brown; unburned vegetation is green. The light gray or white areas are buildings, roads and other developed areas. 838

The US Secret Service said it is reviewing an incident in which an agent blocked a CBS News reporter on Tuesday from questioning Jared Kushner, the President's son-in-law and a senior White House advisor, about the disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi. In video posted to Twitter by the journalist, Errol Barnett, a US Secret Service agent physically prevented him from questioning Kushner. When Barnett explained that he was a member of the press, the agent replied, "I don't give a damn who you are. There's a time and a place."In a statement provided to CNN, a spokesperson for the US Secret Service said the agency was "aware of the video" posted by Barnett. 682

The suspect in the deadly terror attack in New York wasn't only a driver for Uber. He also worked for its rival Lyft.Lyft said late Wednesday that Sayfullo Saipov drove for its ride-hailing app in the past but that it deactivated his account as soon as he was identified as a suspect in the attack.Saipov, a 29-year-old from Uzbekistan who was living in New Jersey, has been charged with federal terrorism offenses in connection with Tuesday's attack in Manhattan in which eight people were killed.Uber said Tuesday that Saipov started driving for it in New Jersey just over six months ago, making more than 1,400 trips. It also banned him from its platform after the attack.Lyft didn't provide details on how long Saipov drove for its app or how many trips he made. It's not unusual for drivers to work for both companies.Saipov's case is drawing renewed attention to the background checks that ride-hailing companies carry out on their drivers.Records show Saipov received multiple traffic citations in the past, including failure to equip a motor vehicle carrier with or maintain a required brake system. Both Uber and Lyft said they hadn't come across any complaints about Saipov's safety as a driver for them.New Jersey rules for ride-hailing services like Uber and Lyft require the companies to conduct criminal background checks, which are usually outsourced to specialist firms. Convictions for crimes like reckless driving automatically disqualify a driver.Uber applies different criteria for background checks depending on state regulations. In general, drivers cannot have more than three minor moving violations, such as speeding tickets, in the past three years.Lyft's website says potential drivers are screened for "driving incidents" but doesn't specify what would disqualify them. Both Uber and Lyft say they are in contact with law enforcement authorities over the New York attack."Our thoughts are with those affected by this tragic act," Lyft said. 1999
