ROME, May 20 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislator Wu Bangguo met here Wednesday evening with Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi.     Wu is the first chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) who has visited Italy since 1997.     Before meeting with Berlusconi, Wu also met with Italian Senate President Renato Schifani Wednesday morning and signed an agreement on establishing a mechanism of regular exchanges between the Chinese NPC and the Italian Senate.     During his meetings with Italian leaders in Rome, Wu expressed the willingness of strengthening economic cooperation with Italy as a way to counter the impact of international financial crisis.     In an earlier meeting with Chinese entrepreneurs who are doing business in Italy, Wu said the financial crisis has brought about new opportunities for cooperation between Chinese and Italian companies.     The Italian leaders expressed the willingness to expand cooperation with China in various fields, saying China's economic growth will hopefully provide new energy for the recovery and rally of world economy.     Both sides agreed that the two countries should coordinate their stance on reform of the international financial system and work for an early recovery of global economy from the financial crisis.     China saw an economic growth of 6.1 percent in the first quarter of this year, the lowest quarterly figure in years. Meanwhile, the European Union economy dropped 4.6 percent in the same period.     China and Italy have maintained a sound momentum in bilateral links. The two sides have consolidated political trust and maintained close communication and coordination on major international issues.     Leaders of the two countries have maintained contact on a regular basis. Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi visited China last October and met with Chinese President Hu Jintao. During the meeting, he said Italy places importance on China's role in international affairs and wish to cooperation with China to counter the impact of international financial crisis.     In recent years, the two countries have kept optimizing structure of trade and expanded investment. Bilateral cooperation in science, technology and environment protection have achieved good results.     China held a Year of Italian Culture last year. In a gesture of embracing China as a huge market and potential source of investment, Italy is to hold a "Year of China" in 2010.     Italy has decided to participate in the 2010 Shanghai World Expo, while it has won the host of the 2015 World Expo. BEIJING, June 27 (Xinhua) -- China always opposes trade protectionism and will not take protectionist actions against overseas companies or foreign goods, Minister of Commerce Chen Deming said here Friday.     He made the remarks when he met the Minister of Knowledge Economy of the Republic of Korea (ROK), Lee Youn Ho.     Chen said that media reports were incorrect when they equated China's latest circular to boost domestic demand and step up supervision on construction projects with protectionism.     Chen said in China's government procurement, the term "domestic products" also include products produced by legally established foreign-funded companies in China.     "China applied to join the World Trade Organization's agreement on government procurement a couple of years ago, which allowed member countries to bid on each other's government tenders." Chen said. "We hope China might join the agreement soon so as to further open up the government procurement market," he said.     "China would like to maintain stable development in economic and trade cooperation with the ROK," Chen said.     Lee said that China's trade policies were fair and transparent, and his country would like to work with China to oppose trade protectionism.

Crude oil futures have risen 60 percent to more than 70 dollars a barrel this year from a July record on signs of a global recovery.     However, economists and analysts believe this round of price hike will not have any direct and obvious impact on the Chinese economy, which is largely fueled by coal.     "As China only needs oil to supply 20 percent of its energy consumption, costlier oil will not make things as bad as costlier coal," said Lin Boqiang, director of the China Center for Energy Economics Research at Xiamen University.     "However, the economy will be hurt if higher crude prices drive up coal prices," Lin said.     In addition, China's consumer prices fell for a fourth month in May, making it easier for the government to raise oil prices, said Niu Li, senior researcher at the State Information Center.     The price hike comes amid a surge in demand for automobiles in the world's third-largest economy. Passenger car sales rose 47 percent in May to 829,100 units, the biggest jump since February 2006.     Chen Zheng, an auto industry analyst with China Securities Co, believed that consumer demand would not be seriously dampened by this round of price hikes, as China's car owners are largely social elites, who can afford the moderate increases in gasoline prices.     "But if oil prices continue to surge, I'm sure many people will stop buying new vehicles, especially the high-emission cars," Chen said.     PetroChina and Sinopec, two major oil producers, went high shortly after opening, but closed with smaller gains, up 0.28 percent and 0.66 percent to 14.48 yuan and 10.66 yuan respectively in Shanghai Tuesday.
