In some cases, they wandered as far as nearly 2 miles away. The 'Domestic Cat Tracking Project' ended up successfully tracking 14 cats. The researchers say the takeaway message is to pay close attention to your pets and bring them in at night. 526

A 17-year-old is recovering in the hospital after being shot in the head by a rubber bullet. Caprice Wade said her son Lazerick Wade, 17, went several blocks away from their home in Milwaukee to check in on a gathering of people outside a home. Minutes later, she had to rush him to a nearby hospital.“My heart sunk to the bottom of my feet,” Caprice Wade said. “I didn’t know what to do.”Cell phone video shows Lazerick in a blue hoodie moments before the shot was fired just feet away from officers. Caprice said her son was asked to move out of the street before the shot was fired.“When he turned around to look at me, his head was split wide open,” she recalled after picking up her son.A spokesperson with Milwaukee Police did confirm rubber bullets were used as part of non-lethal munitions to disperse crowds at the location.A police spokesperson said the department is investigating Caprice’s claims but are still investigating the alleged incident.“He’s in intensive care. We’re just waiting to see what else from there,” Caprice Wade said.Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett has gone on-record decrying certain use-of-force."I stressed the need to bring the temperature down. Bring the temperature down,” Barrett said during an interview. The home where Wade was shot at was the site of a chaotic evening Tuesday as crowds gathered over concerns of two missing teens and other crimes believed to be connected to the home.Milwaukee police said they responded to the home on June 22 to check for a missing 13-year-old and a 15-year-old. The officers searched the home several times but did not locate the teens, the news release said.MPD also sent an update in relation to calls at the home:For the residence that was targeted (the lower) on N. 40th St, there were 8 calls for service at that residence in 2020. 6 of those calls were related to the missing checks, threats, and the fire that occurred on Monday and Tuesday. None of the calls were related to prostitution, sex trafficking or Human Trafficking. This story was originally reported by Tony Atkins on tmj4.com. 2079

A 14-year-old girl is missing a week of school at Omaha North High School in Nebraska after suffering from a concussion during a student fight last week. Lizthy Lopez was hit and punched several times at school when a fight between several boys took place during school hours on Feb. 9. Video of the fight, caught on students' cellphones, show dozens of students around the group of students fighting. Lopez is shown holding onto a male classmate, trying to escape, as several boys pushed and hit her. "I blacked out. Sort of. I thought like what am I supposed to do? Fight back? I don't know. All I thought about was, Liz get out of there," said Lopez. Lopez said she has several bruises on her upper body, including her arms, head, and chest. She says her doctor told her she suffered a concussion and is dealing with frequent headaches as a result of her injuries. Lopez and her 16-year-old cousin Nellis Abrego, who was also shown in the video say the tension between the boys started on Thursday when a boy allegedly touched Lopez's other cousin inappropriately in class. They added the fight between two groups broke out in the hallway on Friday morning and was eventually stopped by a school police officer. The Omaha Police Department was also called on scene.Keni Abrego, Lopez's mom said she didn't realize the severity of the fight until she saw the videos circulating social media. Abrego said she spoke to school officials on Wednesday to address the physical damages her daughter suffered from at school and was told her daughter's safety was a priority. In a statement, Omaha Public Schools said, "We are aware of the incident. School administration continues to work with the families of the students who were involved in the incident and the appropriate disciplinary action is being taken. We are also cooperating with the Omaha Police Department in their investigation of the incident. Due to student privacy laws, we cannot share additional details."Abrego said four of the boys who hit her daughter were expelled and ticketed for assault on school property. Several other boys were suspended for fighting. Abrego also plans to press assault charges against the four boys. "The fighting isn't worth it. It's just not. People are just going to get in trouble," said Lopez. "I do know that any boy or man hitting any woman is not okay. And I still can't believe they hit me because I'm a girl and I knew a lot of those guys."Lopez and her cousin said they're scared of other female students from the school fighting them as a result of several boys' expulsions.Abrego said she plans to keep Lopez at the school for the remainder of the school year but will transfer her daughter schools in the fall.  2799

(KGTV) -- The brother of San Diego hiker Paul Hanks is talking about his ordeal in Joshua Tree National Park. The best news they have to share with the public - Hanks is expected to make a full recovery. "Sunday was his birthday, he turned 54," said Dr. Steven Hanks, his brother. "He likes to take a hike on his birthday so he had gone out to Joshua Tree National Park after spending the morning with (our) mother."RELATED: Missing San Diego hiker found injured in Joshua TreeThe 54-year-old left San Diego on Sunday, March 11. His brother said he was reported missing on Tuesday, March 13 after he failed to show up to a meeting with his ex-wife in Las Vegas. Hanks' truck was found near the Maze Loop and Hanks was found by a member of the Joshua Tree Search and Rescue crew on Thursday, March 15. According to his son-in-law, Hanks broke his ankle and fractured his skull after falling 20 feet. He was missing for four days and buried himself in the sand to stay warm, drinking rainwater to stay hydrated until he was found."He had a very harrowing experience. It's a compelling story of survival and we were just stunned when they found him," Hanks' brother said. "I think he's just incredibly thankful to be alive." When asked if he thought the experience hiker would ever return to Joshua Tree National Park, his brother said:"I think he'll absolutely go back. I do know if he goes back, he won't be going back without a satellite phone...a flare gun," he said, smiling. "He really thought he was going on a minimal risk venture. It was just one of those unfortunate accidents that occurred."      1682
