SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- This Veteran's Day hundreds gathered at the Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial, honoring those who've selflessly served and sacrificed for the nation.Wayne Thompson, who served in the Navy for 30 years, says he attends the Mt. Soledad ceremony every year.“This world would be a lot different if we didn’t have the people that are on this wall. If they didn’t give their lives for the people in this country," said Thompson.Thompson did three tours in Vietnam and now suffers from health complications due to Agent Orange. He's had 11 seizures but says he would serve all over again if asked.“I kept wanting to serve, I don’t know, I just felt like I was doing something for the country, it’s hard to understand, but you get a fulfillment out of serving somebody," said Thompson. He says he's grateful for those who served before him and those serving now.Col. Charles B. Dockery, commanding officer of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, was the keynote speaker at Monday's event. 1009

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The two candidates hoping to become San Diego’s next mayor cast their ballots on Tuesday morning, and both Democrats had messages to voters on Election Day.Barbara Bry and her husband dropped off their ballots at a library in La Jolla on Tuesday. The day before, Bry spent time with her supporters and worked to drum up more support from voters. With his family by his said, Todd Gloria cast his ballot on Tuesday at the County Registrar of Voters in Kearny Mesa. On Monday, he had Gov. Gavin Newsom help him campaign through a virtual phone bank. After carrying out their civic duty, both candidates had messages for San Diego voters.“People hear our message of change for our city. Our focus isn’t on small issues like vacation rentals and scooters, but the big issues like homelessness, housing affordability, and transportation,” Gloria said.Bry said, “We built a grassroots volunteer effort with residents from all over this city. We knew from the beginning we were fighting against the special interest, special interest that has spent more than a million dollars running negative attack ads against me.”The most recent ABC 10News/San Diego Union-Tribune scientific poll shows this race essentially in a dead heat. 1245

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Blood Bank is still dealing with a convalescent plasma shortage. The plasma can be used at local hospitals to help fight COVID-19, but donations from gay men could be turned away if they don’t meet certain requirements. The donation restrictions received national attention after talk show host Andy Cohen says he was turned away from donating the plasma for being gay.The local blood bank explained the restrictions to ABC 10News. The blood bank’s chief medical officer, Dr. Mark Edmunds, says the restrictions are in place by the FDA. He says the FDA actually eased some of the restrictions in April of this year, which was an update from a 2015 change. The FDA says the guidelines exist to protect the safety of the blood and plasma supply. In April, the FDA provided the updated guidelines to allow for a larger donor pool in response to the COVID- 19 pandemic. Before the guideline modifications, a gay man could only donate blood if he abstained from sex for a year. Now, the abstinence time frame is three months.Similar changes were made for people who recently received tattoos or piercings or for travel and residences deferrals related to malaria.Dr. Edmunds says there are studies happening right now to see if and how the donor pool can be expanded even further. The blood bank adopted the FDA’s new regulations on July 31st. Dr. Edmunds says the staff at the blood bank are also working on making donations more inclusive non-binary or transgender individuals. If you’d like more information or would like to donate blood or plasma, you can find more information by clicking here. 1632
