BEIJING, July 27 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese official Li Changchun called for stepped-up efforts to reform the countries cultural sector at a meeting held recently and joined by publicity and culture chiefs from China's central government.Li also urged more progress to be made in the development and prosperity of China's cultural industries.Li, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, presided over the meeting. State Councilor Liu Yandong and Liu Yunshan, head of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, attended the meeting.

ZHAOYUAN, Shandong, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- Fourteen miners were confirmed dead, 23 others still trapped underground while 292 were lift to the ground safely following a fire that engulfed a gold mine in east China's Shandong Province Friday, local authorities said early Saturday morning.A total of 329 miners were working underground when the fire broke out at about 5 p.m. at the Luoshan Gold Mine run by Lingnan Mining Co. Ltd. in Zhaoyuan city, a spokesman with the rescue headquarters told Xinhua.Three hundred and six were lifted to the ground as of 5 a.m., but 14 of them were found dead, he said.Twenty-three people were still trapped underground, with 21 miners' locations identified, he added.Dozens of injured miners had been sent to two local hospitals, he said.An initial investigation showed that the fire was likely caused by an underground cable. Police were further investigating the incident.The mine owner had been taken into police custody, he said.Over 100 rescuers are working at the scene. Provincial Party chief Jiang Yikang and governor Jiang Daming have rushed to the scene to oversee the rescue work.

BEIJING, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- Flood-triggered disasters have killed more than 1,450 Chinese this year, with another 669 missing, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs.Lingering rainstorms have been slashing provinces including Shaanxi, Sichuan and Jilin this year, triggering floods and landslides, which have affected a population of 200 million and forced more than 12 million to evacuate, according to the ministry.Nearly 13.5 million hectares of crops were affected by heavy rains and floods, with 2.09 million hectares destroyed, while floods have also leveled more than 1.36 million houses.The total economic loss was put at more than 275 billion yuan(40.6 billion U.S dollars), according to the ministry.The central finance authority has recently allocated 195 million yuan to subsidize local governments in those regions worst-hit by natural disasters such as rainstorms and typhoons.The fund, which has been channeled to Jilin, Guangdong, Sichuan and Shaanxi, as well as the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, will be used in relocating residents, helping people rebuild homes and offering relief for residents who lost family members.
