Five transgender members of the United States military testified in front of Congress on Wednesday, the first to do so publicly.Army Capt. Alivia Stehlik, Navy Lt. Cmdr. Blake Dremann, Army Capt. Jennifer Peace, Army Staff Sgt. Patricia King and Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Akira Wyatt all testified in front of the House Armed Services Committee, according to the Washington Post.All five testified that they were able to do their jobs effectively after transitioning. Some testified that their fellow soldiers were comfortable with their transition, and their transition even allowed others to open up to them.“They talked to me and told me things they never would have before,” Stehlik said. “Things they said they’ve never told other people. I asked them why, and the consistent answer is that they valued my authenticity — my courage in being myself. It allowed them to do the same thing.”The Obama administration repealed a ban on transgender persons in the military in 2016, allowing active military members to serve openly as transgender for the first time in decades. But in 2017, President Trump abruptly changed the policy in a series of tweets. While a number of lawsuits have been filed and are ongoing, the Supreme Court recently ruled to lift an injunction in some cases, keeping the ban in place. The five military members testified that they all sought medical treatments as part of their transition that prevented them from deploying, but all said they were able to do so by taking personal leave in between deployments.Rep. Jackie Speier (D-California), who called the meeting, was among the representatives to file a bill that would allow transgender service members to serve openly earlier this month. HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colorado — The parents of a teenager shot and killed at STEM School Highlands Ranch in Colorado on Tuesday say their son was a hero, and they want the public to know what a great kid he was.John Castillo confirmed Wednesday that his son, Kendrick Castillo, was the 18-year-old killed in the shooting that left eight others injured.“I want people to know about him,” John Castillo said through tears.Kendrick Castillo was a senior at STEM School and Friday would have been his last day of school. Photos from social media show the young man participating in competitions with the school’s robotics team and posing with friends before attending his first prom.Castillo was killed when two students entered STEM School armed with handguns just before 2 p.m. Tuesday and opened fire. Eight students were injured and three students remained in area hospitals Wednesday morning, officials said.Authorities said they had two suspects in custody — an adult male and a juvenile.STEM School Highlands Ranch will be closed for at least the rest of the week, the district said Tuesday night. Other Douglas County schools are open Wednesday but have extra security on-site. Four Michigan teens who pleaded guilty to throwing a rock off a highway overpass that killed a man were sentenced as adults in a Michigan courtroom on Tuesday.They were ages 15 to 17 when they threw rocks onto I-75 in October 2017 in Genesee County. They called it "overpassing." A six-pound rock went through the windshield of 32-year-old Kenneth White's car as he was driving, killing him. The teens were initially charged with charged with second-degree murder but pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of manslaughter. They were being held in juvenile detention."The injuries are horrific. ... I gasped out (when I saw them)" Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said during the teens' trial in 2017.Genesee County Circuit Court Judge Joseph Farah sentenced Alexander Miller, Trevor Gray, Mikadyn Payne and Mark Sekelski to adult prison, rejecting their defense attorneys’ arguments they should be sentenced as juveniles.The judge gave them until Aug. 20 to withdraw their pleas. Their defense attorneys outside of court called the sentence emotional and political.The mother of the victim, Teresa Simpson, applauded the sentence in court and later said her son, “gets the justice he deserves. He’s happy now. He can rest.”The case pointed to the fifth teen, Kyle Anger, who was 18 at the time of the incident, as the one who planned the prank. He loaded up his pickup with rocks and threw the rock that killed White. He pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and faces several more years in prison when he is sentenced at a later date.Leyton said he didn't think the boys intended to kill anyone when they threw the rocks."I don't think they said, 'OK, we're going to kill Kenneth White when he comes hurtling down the road," Leyton said. "But I do think they said, 'We are going to throw a rock down at the next car that goes by and try to hit it.'"The four teens sentenced Tuesday could be out of prison sometime in 2020.
