As parents are deciding whether to purchase Halloween costumes for their children amid the coronavirus pandemic, one Ohio man is ready to safely welcome trick or treaters to his home.Andrew Beattie has installed a 6-foot chute for candy so he can remain distanced from trick or treaters on Beggars’ Night.Beattie says that the chute will be “touch-free” as children will have the treats drop into their candy bucket without having to come in contact with Beattie. For added safety, Beattie says that he will wear a mask and continually change gloves in order to keep children safe.“I want our youngins to be able to have some sense of normalcy and maybe a little bit of exercise in all this madness, and I've put a LOT of thought into how to do so safely, and I appreciate your concern,” Beattie said in a viral Facebook post published earlier this week.Beattie said the chute is a six-foot long tube of cardboard that is four inches in diameter. He said he was able to install the chute on his porch in 20 minutes.“If this candy chute makes things easier or safer, AND gives those with mobility challenges more of a chance to participate, then what's the harm? An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, ya' know,” Beattie wrote.Beattie has created a Facebook group where he hopes to share ideas with others this fall ahead of Halloween. As wildfires scorch parts of the country, COVID-19 has sidelined a critical group of firefighters: prison inmates. The shortage comes as states are on pace for what could be a relentless fire season.CalFire, the state agency tasked with fighting and preventing wildfires in California, has already responded to over 4,100 fires as of June this year. Compare that to an average of 2,500 in recent years.“This year, we’re seeing something more typical of year’s past, we’re seeing these small starts that are growing into bigger fires," said Thomas Shoots, a CalFire public information officer. "We have a 25,000-acre fire burning up in Fresno now.” Responsible for protecting millions of acres across the state, CalFire relies on help from crews of inmates from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.“These are inmates who’ve chosen to help out California by joining these fire crews, and they’re a huge resource for the state,” said Shoots.Roughly 2,200 prison inmates are trained to work on the fire line, but COVID-19 has depleted their ranks.Of the state’s 118 staffed crews, 41 were quarantined because of prison outbreaks as of July 16, eliminating hundreds of firefighters at a critical time.States like Arizona, Colorado, Washington State, and Oregon also deploy inmates to wildfires, but in far fewer numbers than California.“We’re sitting much shorter than we have been in the past, but we’ve also taken a lot of aggressive steps to make sure we have enough folks for when these fires happen,” said Shoots.The state is hiring 858 paid firefighters to fill the void. They could also turn to the California National Guard and out-of-state resources if needed.“It continues to be a concern that COVID-19 could come in and decimate our staffing, but that hasn’t happened because we’re taking every precaution we can.”Like wildfires, COVID-19 has proved destructive and unpredictable, but firefighters stand ready to battle them both. 1968

  

As part of his push to get schools reopened in the fall, he is calling on Congress to approve 5 billion in funding to help with additional costs associated with the coronavirus pandemic.“This funding will support mitigation measures such as smaller class sizes, more teachers and teacher aides, repurposes spaces to practice social distancing, and crucially mask wearing,” Trump said.Trump is also taking a different tact to compelling schools to reopen. Previously, Trump threatened to pull federal funds from schools that did not reopen. Many of those funds are through the Title 1 program, which are directed toward poorer and disadvantaged schools.Rather than pulling federal funds from schools that opt for virtual learning, Trump said that the supplemental funds would go with the students. Under his proposal, students could use federal funds for other in-person learning options, or for homeschooling.“If schools do not reopen, the funding should go to parents to send their child to public/private, charter, religious or home school of their choice, the keyword being choice,” Trump said. “If the school is closed, the money should follow the student so the parents and families are in control of their own decisions. So, we would like the money to go to the parents of the student. This way they can make the decision that's best for them.”Trump said that the CDC would issue new guidance Thursday evening on how to safely reopen schools.While Senate Republicans seem poised to pass additional education funds as part of a broader stimulus plan, Democrats are not as enthusiastic.Speaker Nancy Pelosi told reporters on Thursday that the bill “so far falls very short of the challenge that we face in order to defeat the virus and to open our schools and to open our economy.”The bill also includes funding for coronavirus tests and a second round of stimulus checks. 1887

  

ATLANTA, Ga. – UPS expects to hire more than 100,000 seasonal employees to support the anticipated increase in packages during the holiday season.The company announced Wednesday that its filling full-time and part-time seasonal positions, primarily package handlers, drivers, driver-helpers, and personal vehicle drivers.“We’re preparing for a record peak holiday season. The COVID-19 pandemic has made our services more important than ever,” said the company’s chief human resources officer, Charlene Thomas, in a press release.UPS says it’s offering competitive wages across multiple shifts in thousands of locations across the country.“At a time when millions of Americans are looking for work, these jobs are an opportunity to start a new career with UPS,” said Thomas.According to Thomas, a large number of seasonal workers will move into permanent roles after the holidays.Over the last three years, UPS says about 35% of the people it has hired for seasonal package handler jobs were later hired in a permanent position when the holidays were over, and nearly a third of the company’s U.S. workforce started in seasonal positions.Additionally, the company has an Earn and Learn program, in which eligible seasonal employees who are students can earn up to ,300 towards college expenses, in addition to their hourly pay, for three months of continuous employment.“UPS has invested nearly 0 million in tuition assistance – nearly million a year since the program was established in 1997 – helping over 300,000 employees pay for their college education,” the company wrote.Interested applicants should apply at www.upsjobs.com. 1648
