SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In October, members of ICE, CBP and USBP held a meeting with several organizations in San Diego, telling them the Department of Homeland Security would be ending a policy known as “safe release.”That’s according to a lawsuit filed Wednesday by the County of San Diego against Kirstjen Nelson, secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.The policy of safe release had been in place since at least 2009. Under it, ICE would work with asylum seekers who had made it legally across the border to connect with family or sponsors in the United States. ICE officials would coordinate transportation as well, making sure the migrants made it to their final destinations.At the meeting in October, federal authorities notified Jewish Family Service and the San Diego Rapid Response Network that ICE would no longer be providing that service.“When that policy ended we quickly began to notice there were moms and children being dropped off at the bus stations here in San Diego,” said Michael Hopkins, CEO of Jewish Family Service. “We realized pretty quickly that we needed to create some type of shelter so that we didn’t have families sleeping on our sidewalks and adding to our homelessness problem in San Diego.”Since October, Hopkins estimates they’ve helped nearly 12,000 migrants in San Diego.On average, they take in 50 to 100 people per day, but it can fluctuate.“Last week we had nights when it was over 200,” said Hopkins.The shelter has moved around several times, but in March, the County announced it would allow the Rapid Response Network to operate the shelter out of the former family courthouse in Downtown San Diego.The operation has cost about .3 million, according to the County.It’s come from a mix of donations and money given to the county by the state.In a statement from DHS, officials told 10News, “until Congress acts to address the obvious drivers of the crisis and gives the Department the proper resources, we will continue to refine and adapt our processes to address our many priority missions to the best of our abilities.” 2083

San Diego International Airport was pretty empty Wednesday afternoon with no crowds or long lines and everyone was wearing masks.While it appeared to be smooth sailing for passengers, airline workers are faced with more of a challenge.“For United Airlines no one has been rehired for the holiday,” said Dante Harris. He’s a flight attendant of 21 years and President of the Association of Flight Attendants Southern California chapter. Harris was one of many hit by massive airline layoffs in October when stimulus money ran dry.“Industry-wide, more than 100,000 employees in the airline industry have been furloughed,” said Harris. “It has been absolutely a disaster.”While he’s not currently flying, some of his colleagues still are. Many of them faced with this problem:“Flight attendants are trying to enforce the mask policy, there are people who get belligerent, people who get non-compliant,” said Harris.Cases across the county are on the rise, yet Harris says some airlines are pushing towards getting back to normal.“Selling alcohol and serving food. We are fighting against that. that is not something we want to go back to right away.”The Auto Club estimates nearly 4 million Southern Californians will travel for Thanksgiving. Timeshares can also be transferred to out-of-town hotels, one year at a time. The county expects many to go at the initial offering price. A timeshare is when a person shares in the ownership of a property with others, so that each gets a week of vacation per year. Many of the timeshares were repossessed after the Great Recession, when owners failed to pay at least five years of property tax. "For one week of family bliss in a vacation once a year, this may be the opportunity for as little as 0," said Dan McAllister, the county treasurer-tax collector. "But it is a buyer beware sale."San Diego attorney Dan Eaton said there are many risks to buying a timeshare, and getting out of one can be very difficult."If you think you're just buying a 0 timeshare and you've got access to the timeshare for life without any further cost, that's a huge mistake," Eaton said. Timeshares include annual fees - including maintenance - that can get very expensive."If you stop paying those fees, they can foreclose," Eaton said. "It's an interest in real property."At the Solana Beach Sand Pebbles resort - starting bid 0 - annual fees range from 4 to 2 depending on unit size. And some of the timeshares don't include some parts of the year. Allison Russell, the resort's property manager, said it's vital people do their due diligence before buying. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It's survival of the fittest once again for gyms and fitness centers across the county as San Diego braces for stricter pandemic-related restrictions that go into effect Saturday.One gym preparing for the big shift is major chain 24 Hour Fitness. While members can't choose from their dozens of locations to workout, seven county locations will be open and offering outdoor equipment to members."We're committed to staying outdoors, staying safe, and the well-being of our members is the priority," said 24 Hour Fitness district manager John Amato.Amato told ABC 10News that member visits will be reservation based with 90-minute windows, minimized to 57 guests at a time.While many prepared for what's to come, others like gym owner Tom Green of Green Speed Training in Eastlake did the opposite. Instead of expanding his outdoor space for members, he doubled the square footage on the inside, even though guests won't be allowed to workout indoors until the county falls in a less restrictive tier."It's certainly risky, but I've always been kind of a risk taker and I go with my gut instinct, and if I feel good about it, I go for it," Green said.Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, Green said support from the Eastlake community along with members of his gym have helped keep things afloat and allowed him to upgrade indoor space."It's very supportive, and we have a lot of great clients who really support what we're doing,” said Green.Regardless, both gyms said they'll continue to be there for their clients no matter which tier San Diego slips into next."To get that one-hour workout in, and de-stress to stay healthy, that's what our goal is,” said Amato. 1691
