MIAMI — Residents of Bermuda are urged by forecasters to prepare to protect life and property ahead of Hurricane Paulette. The U.S. National Hurricane Center says Paulette is expected to grow into a dangerous storm as it approaches the territory Sunday. It has maximum sustained winds at 75 mph that are expected to intensify. It's the strongest in terms of winds of six disturbances the center is tracking in the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico. Tropical Storm Sally is threatening the Gulf Coast with dangerous storm surge, heavy rainfall and strong winds. Two tropical depressions and two other disturbances were also at sea or in the Gulf. 653
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel says President Donald Trump's personal attorney Rudy Giuliani "embarrassed the state" on Wednesday in a Michigan House Oversight Committee Wednesday night in which he again attempted to overturn the results of the 2020 election in the state. The meeting featured Giuliani questioning witnesses he brought, as well as unverified and false claims regarding election fraud in the city of Detroit.Nessel, a Democrat, said that Republican members of the committee "embarrassed our state and defamed Michigan's most populous city."Nessel also called on Michigan Republican Party Chair Laura Cox to "put up or shut up" and instead take the evidence Republicans say they have of election fraud to her office for investigation. While Trump has been attempting for several weeks to overturn the results of the election citing widespread voter fraud, his legal team has presented little evidence to support his claim.Attorney General Bill Barr, one of Trump's staunchest defenders, said this week that the DOJ uncovered no evidence of widespread fraud that would change the election results.Several witnesses presented by Giuliani Wednesday say they saw irregularities and fraud while counting ballots at Detroit's TCF Center after polls closed. There is no evidence that proves those claims, and judges have ruled against lawsuits that argued the same claims brought in front of the committee.Giuliani also claimed as he has for weeks that thousands of votes were cast illegally despite offering no evidence to support his claim.Michigan has already certified the results of the November election, with president-elect Joe Biden winning the state by more than 150,000 votes. This story was originally published by Max White on WXYZ in Detroit. 1776
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Five-year-old NeeCee, a female snow leopard at the Louisville Zoo, has tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19 in humans, the zoo announced in a release issued Friday. The Louisville Zoo is awaiting confirmatory results of the other two male snow leopards – Kimti and Meru. All three cats are doing well with very mild symptoms. The zoo said it continues to monitor their health closely and expects all three cats to recover. No other animals are showing symptoms at this time. The three snow leopards began exhibiting minor respiratory symptoms, including an occasional dry cough or wheeze, within the last two weeks. It is suspected that NeeCee acquired the infection from an asymptomatic staff member, despite precautions by the Zoo.“Fortunately, based on clinical cases in large cats at other zoos in the country to this point, SARS-CoV-2 infection does not appear to be life-threatening,” said Dr. Zoli Gyimesi, the zoo's senior staff veterinarian. “We will be closely monitoring the snow leopards for ongoing symptoms and resampling them to identify when they have cleared the infection.”In April 2020, four tigers and three lions were confirmed positive at the Bronx Zoo in New York. An additional three tigers at an AZA zoo in Tennessee were confirmed to be infected this fall. Just last week, the Barcelona Zoo announced four lions tested positive for SARS-CoV-2. In all cases, the animals recovered and are doing well. This story originally reported on LEX18.com. 1522
