SAN DIEGO, CA — SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The City of San Diego calls it the "Get It Done" App, but a Normal Heights man says he wants to know when work will get done."They block the sidewalk. They've ripped through my canopy. They've killed my two lemon trees," said Mike Scaglione as he stood in front of his home. He's referring to the damage caused by palm fronds that fall from two trees on city property he says are in serious need of maintenance. "It'll be seven years tomorrow that I've lived here and in that time frame I've probably picked up 3 or 4 hundred palm fronds."Scaglione said he's been trying for several months to get the city to keep up with the trimming of the two palms outside his home. "They say they're going to, or they direct me to somebody, but it just keeps going no where until it's a dead end." Scaglione says aside from the damaged to his property, he fears a potential for much worse. "Its kind of hard to see," he says, grabbing a palm frond from a pile collected near the trees, "but if you run your hand along here there's a pretty jagged toothed edge on here that if it was to land on somebody it could rip them pretty nicely."Scaglione has been using the city's Get It Done app. Past reports show crews have responded to clean up the fronds once they're on the ground. But when it came to a neighborhood tree trim last October he says, "They came through here and trimmed every tree on the block except mine." Scaglione said he asked the crews why. "They didn't have anything that could get up that high." Scaglione estimates the trees at 40 to 50 feet.In response to an inquiry by 10News, a city spokesperson sent an email explaining San Diego is on a two-year cycle for trimming city owned palm trees. Scaglione's block was on the schedule for October. But there's still more work to be done. So, does that mean the trees in front of Scaglione's home will be trimmed? "Yes," replied the spokesperson, "It is on the schedule." Though Mike feels like he's been here before."They would look into it when they were doing similar work in the neighborhood. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- As we get into the heart of fire season, there are big concerns for neighbors who live along a former golf course. The old Carmel Mountain Ranch Country Club is full of dried brush. Neighbors say they are worried the owner is letting the property become a fire hazard. Chain linked fences block off the entrances to the now-shuttered golf course. "It's looking pretty rough," says neighbor Jeffery Acogido. He's been living in his Carmel Mountain Ranch home for almost 30 years. "The course was actually here before the residences."The brush from the site comes right up to neighbors backyards. As we continue to see, warmer weather neighbors say the unwanted vegetation is becoming a fire hazard. "The community is really concerned that it's just going to be a matter of time that something unfortunate might happen."There have been talks of developing the land. 10News made calls to speak with the owner about the neighbor's concerns but haven't heard back. (KGTV) - San Diego County has given the green light on day camps reopening for the summer and some are moving forward, some are going virtual, and others have made the decision to cancel summer camp plans altogether.A major camp, the YMCA, has been making plans to reopen during the summer for the past few months, and a spokesperson said when they opened online enrollment, some camps filled up within half an hour. There are still camps available at all ten locations, though.“It’s showing us that there’s definitely a need and people are really excited for camp, which is great,” said Nat Corrall, YMCA Association Director of Child and Youth Development.She said they’ll be implementing the County’s rules, including practicing social distancing, taking temperatures upon arrival and keeping kids interacting only with their small group rather than a larger group. She said they already have more than 100 social distancing activities planned.“At the end of the day, it is still camp, it just looks a little different,” said Corrall.On the opposite spectrum, Outpost Summer Camps has canceled camp altogether. This camp, on average, sees 1,200 kids, with up to 1,500 in a good year. This year, they opened up registration January 1 and by the time they made the decision to cancel camp in April, already had around 600 kids enrolled.Outpost Summer Camps Executive Director and Owner Dr. Kelly Jones said they gave full refunds and are feeling the financial hit. She said they decided to cancel camp in early April rather than wait and take a risk because of the level of uncertainty. She also said their camp has a foundation of interactive games so a summer of social distancing wouldn’t be the same.“This was going to be such a new level of things that were unknown, uncontrollable and then really potentially unsafe,” said Jones. “It would just sound so sad to say ‘be apart, don’t touch each other, don’t be so close.’ That’s sad for kids. Usually we see kids together and we smile and we go aw and they’re holding hands and they’re arm in arm.”She said she and her husband typically donate ,000 to ,000 to a scholarship program to send kids to their camp but are unsure if they’ll be able to do that because of the financial hit this year. In response, camp families have donated ,377 to the fund to help send kids in 2021.Jones also said they typically increase fees year to year to make up for inflation, but they're not sure what they'll do in 2021. She did say they'll be redoing their terms and conditions for the refund policy.A third San Diego summer camp is taking a different step: moving online. Tech Adventure Camp has hosted camps featuring tech adventures, robotics, virtual reality, artificial intelligence and more in San Diego for about six years. Executive Director Dr. Korey Sewell said they knew the summer wouldn’t be normal in April and realized they would have to adapt. He said hands-on learning is important for tech education, so they’ve created a new type of program.“What if we had some experiences where we allow you to do the things at home and keep going at home?” he said.They created a virtual camp. Kids have at-home robotics kits to build. A portion of camp will be in a group video class, some will be one-on-one time with an instructor and the rest will be tutorial videos. He said this year, they’re also feeling the financial hit, but they hope to grow this virtual setting into a hybrid class that can be used in future summers. San Diego (KGTV)- In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, hundreds are giving back in the best way they can. This morning volunteers rolled up their sleeves to clean up Balboa Park. 14-year-old Maya Hundley spent the morning planting flowers with her family at the MLK Day of Service Interfaith Project. "I think it's important any day to help out, especially today," says Hundley. "Instead of being lazy or taking it as an extra day off, you can use that time to make a difference in the world." More than 300 volunteers spent the morning cleaning up Balboa Park. "People are doing anything from planting trees and flowers to raking leaves and hauling brush," says Melissa Spence with First United Methodist Church of San Diego. The city's parks and recreation department was on hand, showing volunteers which areas needed the most care. The MLK Day of Service Interfaith Project includes Christians, Jews, Muslims, and Unitarians working together. This is the 11th year the group has come together for the event. "As people of different faiths, we recognize that God gave us this earth we're being called to care for it in the best way that we can," says Spence. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- The DMV is apologizing for long wait times as they work through a new queuing system and problems with the REAL ID.Wait times (without an appointment) used to be under two hours, now they're closer to 4-5 hours. The DMV issued this statement to 10News:The issue is employees have to manually enter the ID number given to each customer, since a new system went online two weeks ago. The ID number consists of your initials and the last four digits of your phone number.The process prior was completely automatic.The other issue relates to the REAL ID. Employees are taking more time to explain to customers what they need to have in order to get the ID.
