BALTIMORE — BALTIMORE, M.D. - It’s Cyber Security Awareness month and the FBI wants to warn people about potential scams, especially while so many are working and going to school virtually.One Montgomery County man, who wants to stay anonymous, was scammed out of thousands of dollars using a dating app and doesn’t want others to make the same mistakes."Emotionally, it’s like there are claws in you that you can't seem to get out," said D. For years, the man who we are calling 'D' thought he was in a caring online relationship, but just last month, he found out it was all a scam."I was a little lonely. I was needing some attention or I guess I just wanted some," said D.It started 5 years ago. Divorced, he had turned to date apps Skout and Meet Me to fill that emotional void and met Brandy Bowens from Canada. It seemed like an innocent relationship for a while, but then she started asking him to be the middle man for her "art business"."By me already being invested in our conversations and our online relationships, I kind of felt it was okay for me to do these things that they wanted," said D.So he started getting money transferred to his bank account that he would then send out in cashiers checks."I had received three wire transfers of over 0,000 and these monies they claimed were for their business," said D. It kept adding up... and then she asked for his money.It all came to a head last month when he got a call from the FBI saying it was all a scam; his ,000 was gone."It's hard. I lost the money and it messed up everything in a financial way for me. I'm trying to build my credit back, just so much that that has screwed up for me," said D.FBI Special Agent Jeffrey Reising said these scams are even more common now during the pandemic because criminals are taking advantage of government programs like unemployment and funneling the money through romance scam victims, like D."Just red flags, like 'Why am I getting unemployment in other people's names in my account? Why am I getting tens of thousands of dollars in my account'?" said Reising.Other red flags to look for are if they can never meet in person, or even answer phone calls, if they don’t have a real voicemail or if they ask for your bank account."Why can I not talk to this person face to face using some of the technology available? Why can’t I interact? Why is all of our communication on a text?" said Reising.It’s red flags D saw, but the scammer could explain away."Saying 'my phone is broke' or 'my camera doesn’t work'," said D.Now he’s sharing his story, hoping that especially during this virtual time, he can stop others from falling victim."Be cautious. If you get that flag, if you don’t get the answer for that flag, then you need to leave it alone," said D. As the world waits for deliveries of Pfizer’s coronavirus vaccine, the pharmaceutical company is having to adjust their target after hitting supply chain obstacles, according to the Wall Street Journal.“Scaling up the raw material supply chain took longer than expected,” a company spokeswoman told the WSJ.Pfizer and partner BioNTech SE had hoped to ship out 100 million doses of their vaccine by the end of the year, that has now reportedly been cut to estimates of about 50 million.Two doses are needed for each person to be vaccinated.Pfizer did not elaborate on where the raw material shortfalls happened. They did say some raw materials in early production earlier this year did not meet their standards and they had to fix the issue.After the WSJ’s report, Pfizer’s stock price dropped and the S&P 500 fell slightly.The United Kingdom has granted emergency use of the Pfizer vaccine, and is expected to start administering doses soon. The FDA in the U.S. is considering a similar authorization, which could come later in December.As part of Operation Warp Speed, the U.S. Government has purchased 100 million doses of Pfizer’s vaccine, with an option to buy more.Roughly 20 million of those doses were expected by the end of the year once the FDA granted emergency use authorization. No word on how Pfizer’s shipping delays could impact this number.Pfizer says their production lines in the U.S. and Europe are complete and they are “confident” they will supply the targeted number of doses in early 2021. 1524

AVILA BEACH, Calif. — Officials say two women are lucky to be alive after a humpback whale capsized their kayak as they paddled in the ocean on Monday.The incident, which occurred near the Cal Poly Pier, was caught on video by multiple people in the area.Julie McSorley says she went out Sunday and took pictures of the whales and convinced her friend to go kayaking with her on Monday.McSorley says there were a lot of birds and fish in the area, so people had their phones at the ready. She said she and her friend could see whales off in the distance.Seconds later, one of the whales was right underneath them.While some video footage makes it appear as the women went inside the whale's mouth, McSorley says their kayak just overturned, and they were thrown underwater.Video shows McSorley screamed before going underwater for about five or six seconds.Humpback whales are considered an endangered species, and marine mammal experts say they can be unpredictable and dangerous. Experts say people should keep about a football field's worth of space between themselves and the large mammals, when possible.The Port San Luis Harbor Patrol says enforcement can be difficult. Boaters can think they've left a whale plenty of space, but the mammals move quickly.The whales have been making appearances close to shore between Morro Bay and Avila Beach in recent days. ATLANTA — Georgia’s top elections official says his office is investigating potential election law violations by groups working to register voters ahead of January's Senate runoffs. Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger named four groups his office is specifically investigating: America Votes, Vote Forward, The New Georgia Project and Operation New Voter Registration Georgia. He says some groups are allegedly encouraging people outside the state to register to vote in January's Senate run-off election, according to The Hill. “We have opened an investigation into a group called America Votes, who is sending absentee ballot applications to people at addresses where they have not lived since 1994,” Raffensperger said Monday in announcing the investigations. America Votes responded to the accusations in a statement to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, saying they have mailed applications to those on the list of voters maintained by Raffensperger's office. The secretary is also punching back at claims that fraud has tainted the state’s presidential election. Raffensperger said dishonest actors are exploiting the emotions of many Trump supporters with fantastic claims and apparently misleading the president as well. He said during a news conference Monday that his office has 23 investigators probing 250 open cases alleging some kind of election law violation, but none of them cast doubt on the integrity of the state's election results. 1461
