Mayors across the country are asking their residents to take part of a friendly competition to see which cities can conserve the most water during the month of April.  Residents who participate in the Wyland National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation from April 1 to April 30 have the opportunity of winning ,000 toward their utility payments for a year. They can also win daily prizes, such as water-saving fixtures, cash and an Apple iPad Mini 4.In addition to residents winning prizes, one charity will receive a 2018 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid to help it serve the community."Last year, the challenge awarded more than ,000 in prizes to nearly 300 residents in U.S. cities," according to the challenge's website.Unsure how you can participate? LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The mayor of Los Angeles is authorizing the city to shut off the utilities at homes and businesses that host large parties during the COVID-19 pandemic.Mayor Eric Garcetti made the announcement Wednesday, arguing that such large gatherings put the entire community at risk of contracting the deadly coronavirus.Garcetti says he will allow the city to shut off Los Angeles Department of Water and Power service in “egregious” cases, in which houses, businesses and other venues are hosting unpermitted large gatherings.“While we have already closed all nightclubs and bars, these large house parties have essentially become nightclubs in the hills,” said Garcetti. “Many times, the homes are vacant or used for short term rentals. And beyond the noise, traffic and nuisance, these large parties are unsafe and can cost Angelinos their lives.”Starting on Friday night, Garcetti says if the Los Angeles Police Department responds and verifies that a large gathering is occurring at a reoffending property, officers will provide notice and initiate the process to request that DWP shut off service within the next 48 hours.The mayor’s announcement came hours after a city councilman introduced a motion to increase penalties for property owners who hold large parties in violation of public health orders. Under the motion, penalties for these gatherings could also include utility shut offs.The city’s actions come after a deadly shooting at a mansion party on Tuesday, where police say a 35-year-old woman was killed and multiple other people were wounded, KNBC and KCBS report.The Los Angeles Public Health Department continues to advise residents to keep 6 feet apart from others, only gather with those you live with, wash or sanitize hands often, and always where a mask when leaving home. 1821

Many Starbucks locations will close on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. local time to allow for employees to participate in racial-bias education. All Starbucks company-owned retail stores and corporate offices will be closed in the afternoon of Tuesday, May 29. Franchised locations are not participating in Tuesday's training. The training was announced last month after a store manager called police to forcibly remove two African-Americans for loitering. LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) — A Louisville man, arrested just outside of Chicago, is accused of killing a woman and putting her body parts in a suitcase to visit his family several hours away, according to multiple media outlets.The Louisville Metro Police Department says they were able to track the homicide back to a home in their area, after getting information from investigators in Illinois.Police in Markham, Illinois, a Chicago suburb close to the Indiana border, said the suspect's family picked up the man from a Greyhound bus stop in Chicago recently. "He brought with him luggage two, three bags," Markham Police Chief Terry White told WBBM. Chief White says the family claims they did not know what was in his bags, but became suspicious when the man never unpacked and allegedly kept guarding the bags. Police say the family reported a foul odor was leaking from a suitcase. Police were called when a family member opened the suitcase while the man was out and found the body parts, according to WBBM. "A human body part was discovered. They immediately back away and called police," Chief White said.Officials say the suspect has been arrested. The man's identity or any charges have not been released at this time.LMPD, Markham police and the FBI are investigating the case. The family is cooperating with investigators. 1339
