HOHHOT, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- The key to social harmony and stability in China is to strengthen and improve the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC), Xi Jinping, Vice President and member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, said during a tour of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.     Xi said issues concerning economic development and social stability were top priority in the country's minority areas during his tour from Aug. 22 to 25.     He visited villages, customs posts, companies, communities and schools in Hulun Buir, Manzhouli, Baotou, Erdos, and Hohhot. BRUSSELS, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Vice-President Xi Jinping urged closer cooperation between China and Belgium during a speech Friday at the China-Belgium Economic and Trade Forum.     Xi said the development of cooperation between China and Belgium has brought tangible benefits to the two countries.Despite the impact of the global financial crisis, bilateral trade volume rose 14.4 percent to 20.2 billion U.S. dollars in 2008, 1,000 times as much 38 years ago when diplomatic relations were established, he said.     The vice president advanced a three-point proposal to further strengthen bilateral cooperation. China will continue introducing advanced foreign technology, management experience and personnel with special capabilities as well as promoting self-reliance on technological innovation, Xi said.     The two countries have the potential to enlarge technology cooperation and personnel exchanges in various sectors, including manufacturing, finance, nuclear energy, tourism, port and corporation management, Xi said.     Belgian companies could also strengthen their cooperation with their Chinese counterparts to participate in development projects in western, northeastern and central China and in the process of upgrading China's industrial structure, Xi said.     Third, the two countries should also continue improving services and management in a bid to form a better environment for trade and investment.     China and Belgium should make a good use of their cooperation mechanisms, including a joint committee for economy and trade and the Chinese-Belgian investment fund, he said.     They also should try to eliminate trade and investment barriers, provide conveniences for each other's companies in terms of visas and working licenses, improve the efficiency of the investment fund between the two countries and encourage companies to establish long-term and stable cooperation, Xi said.     The two governments also should enhance administrative surveillance and management by protecting intellectual property rights and improving market order to provide a good environment for each other's companies, Xi said.     During the speech, Xi also reviewed the rapid development of bilateral ties between China and the European Union (EU).     Further development of China-EU relations is faced with new challenges as well as opportunities in the face of a number of international issues, Xi said. Those issues, he said, include the global financial crisis, world economic development, climate change, food and energy security, the Doha round of trade talks, and international financial structure reforms.     "I believe that the perspective of the mutual benefit cooperation between China and the EU has a better future with the joint efforts of the two sides," Xi said.     Xi also reviewed the great achievements China has made in the 60 years since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949.     Xi stressed that there still is a long way to go for China to achieve a more prosperous society.     As a peace-loving country, Xi said, China will always continue efforts to cooperate with world countries based on the five principles of peaceful coexistence. He said China also would actively help solve regional and international hot issues and work together with the international community for a peaceful and harmonious world.     Under the current situation, China will continue to cooperate with Belgium and other EU members to promote reforms of the international financial system, to enhance international financial surveillance, to prevent further spread of the financial crisis and to stem the torrent of all kinds of trade and investment protectionism.     Xi arrived here Wednesday for an official visit to Belgium, the first leg of his five-nation European tour. He will also visit Germany, Bulgaria, Hungary and Romania.  

BEIJING, August 5 -- Property sales across 30 cities in China fell 4 percent in July as prices soared and supplies dwindled with big cities feeling the pinch for the first time this year, analysts said.     According to the UWIN property transaction system, the floor space of apartments sold in July dipped 5.37 percent over June to 1.04 million sq m.     Statistics put out by the Beijing Real Estate Transaction website showed that sales of forward delivery housing in Beijing fell to 10,862 units last month, compared to 12,840 units in June.     Property transactions in Guangzhou fell 36 percent over June. The figure is only half of that of May, said Guangzhou's official property website.     "The fall has been triggered by high property prices and shrinking supplies in some cities," said Qin Xiaomei, head of research, Jones Lang LaSalle Beijing. "Property developers have slowed down the pace of new projects in the second half after robust sales in the first half," she said.     Property prices in China's 70 major cities were up 0.8 percent in June, the fourth month-on-month growth in a row this year, according to statistics from the National Development and Reform Commission.     Beijing and Shanghai reported a month-on-month growth of 0.4 and 1 percentage points respectively in June, with prices skyrocketing to record highs of 2007 in some areas, fueled by strong investment, purchase demand and higher land prices.     The high prices have also made most of the prospective buyers wary of making fresh investments.     Li Wei, a 29-year-old company executive in Beijing, said he would prefer to adopt a wait-and-see attitude as the high prices have made most of his preferred apartments unaffordable.     "The unit price of the apartment has soared to 20,000 yuan per sq m from 14,500 yuan per sq m 40 days ago," Li said.     For others like Zhang Li, a property speculator from Wenzhou, Zhejiang province, this is the time to cash in. The apartment she bought in November last year has gained 40 percent in the past six months, largely exceeding her expectations.     "I am a bit uneasy with such a rapid increase in such a short period of time," said Zhang, who has property investment experience of more than a decade. "With people's income and economic fundamentals seeing no big change, I think selling the property will be a safer bet."     According to Grant Ji, director of Savills (Beijing), a UK-based real estate service provider, the fall in transaction volume is still within a normal band.     "July was an off-season for the housing market," said Ji.     "With no big shift likely in the macroeconomic policy during the second half, property prices are unlikely see a big fall as the market is still awash with funds," Ji said.

NANJING, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- An antiwar cartoon exhibition displaying works by 110 Japanese artists opened in the eastern Chinese city of Nanjing Saturday to mark the 64th anniversary of Japan's surrender in World War II.     The exhibition, jointly organized by the Memorial Hall of the Victims of the Nanjing Massacre and the Japanese non-governmental association of "My Aug. 15," will last three moths.     About 160 cartoon works will be displayed, the first time the exhibition is held outside Japan, the organizers said.     Most of the authors of the cartoons were born before Aug. 15, 1945 and had deep memories about the war. In addition, many of them lived in different parts of China with their parents at that time and learned of the news of Japan's surrender in China. Many years later, they produced a group of works with the theme of "My Aug. 15," conveying their condemnation about the war atrocities and reflection on the militaristic brutality.     The exhibition was divided into four parts according to the authors' ages when Japan surrendered, "above 16," "8-15," "5-7" and "below four."     Nine prestigious Japanese cartoonists, along with about 100 people from several Japanese NGOs, attended the opening ceremony of the exhibition Saturday.     "It tells a true story," said 70-year-old artist Kenji Morita, pointing to his own work "Thanks to Adoptive Chinese Parents."     "Although Japan was an invader, many Chinese parents still helped raise Japanese children orphaned by the war," he said.     Leading Japanese manga artist Tetsuya Chiba also recalled the war past he experienced in China.     "I was in Shenyang (capital of northeast China's Liaoning Province) the day when Japan's surrender in World War II was announced by the late Emperor Hirohito over radio. I was only six then, and I couldn't really understand what happened," Chiba told Xinhua.     "I didn't manage to return to Japan immediately, so I spent a very hard year in China after Japan's surrender. But I met a very nice Chinese couple, they gave me food even when they didn't have enough to eat. When we separated, they gave me a blanket. I kept the blanket for years until I met their offspring," he said.     "Aug. 15 is a meaningful day for both China and Japan, whether to mark the victory or to introspect the war. The day reminds us to be against wars," he added.
