COVID-19’s disproportionate impact on people living with diabetes is a growing concern.The American Diabetes Association says nearly 40% of COVID-19 deaths have been from those with the disease, while 90% of the hospitalizations have been people with diabetes or other underlying conditions.“Diabetes was a health crisis and epidemic in this country before the pandemic, and what the pandemic has done really is shine a very bright light on an old problem,” said Tracey Brown, CEO of the American Diabetes Association.Brown has lived with diabetes for 16 years. So, the burden has only worsened for those that have lost health coverage because of job loss.The disease also disproportionately impacts people of color living in low income areas.Brown says even now in 2020, every 5 minutes, someone in the U.S. loses a limb because of complications from diabetes.“There are so many comorbidities that go along with this, which is another reason why I talk about the fact that if we want to address the wellbeing of Americans, and improve the wellbeing of Americans, you can't have that conversation without having a conversation about improving diabetes,” said Brown.Brown wants to make sure people with diabetes don't feel like they're alone right now.There's a page of resources available on their website, Diabetes.org. CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. — An Indiana man has been charged with murder after he allegedly killed and decapitated his wife.Police arrested Michael Parks of Crawfordsville on Friday after investigators found his wife's body and severed head, according to court documents filed Monday.On Aug. 20, the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office received a report of a deceased woman, identified as Hope Parks, whose headless body was found on County Road 225 on the Sugar Creek Bridge.Michael Parks told Crawfordsville police his wife had been missing since Aug. 18 following an argument. He said the last time he saw her was when she left their house and got into a silver or white Honda that was driven by an unknown person.During a search of the couple's house, police found dried blood in the gravel driveway in front of an overhead garage door, on the garage floor with a shoe print and on an exterior deck. Officers also discovered a trail of dried blood in the grass.Later in the day, investigators found a human head with a bullet wound buried in the cellar of the house.Police also found a .22 caliber rifle and ammunition, which matched a spent .22 caliber cartridge casing that was found in the yard next to a trail of blood. A phone believed to have belonged to Hope Parks was found in a safe in the home's bedroom. Investigators also found a man's shoe with tread similar to the footprint in the blood droppings in the garage.The next day, investigators discovered a blue tarp that was stained with blood, along with hair and plastic bags containing blood-covered rags that were found in the hole where the severed head was buried.An initial hearing for Michael Parks was held Tuesday. CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A celebration of life was held in Coronado Thursday night for Nicole Quitasol, the San Diego woman killed in a boat fire off Santa Cruz Island. The event was held at Nicky Rottens, and restaurant officials said the celebration of life was also to help the fundraising efforts to support Quitasol’s family. Quitasol was on the dive trip with four family members, her coworkers posted on Facebook. (AP) — A fatal shooting inside a Costco Wholesale warehouse store Friday night took place after a man attacked an off-duty police officer, the Corona Police Department said.Kenneth French, 32, of Riverside assaulted the Los Angeles Police Department officer while he was holding his young child, the department said in a statement Saturday night. The officer fired his gun, hitting French and two of French's relatives, the department said.French was killed, the department said. The relatives are in critical conditions at hospitals.The officer, whose identity is being withheld, was treated and released at a nearby hospital, and the officer's child was not injured, the department said.The officer was the only person who fired shots in the store, the department said.The shooting prompted a stampede of frightened shoppers to flee the store east of Los Angeles and seek cover inside.Witnesses said they saw a man with a Mohawk haircut arguing with someone near a freezer section when shots rang out at least six times.
