SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego Fire-Rescue chaplain found himself in need after flames ripped through his apartment in Old Town.Father David Fucci was with a friend last Thursday night when he got a call."My neighbor calls and says, 'Your apartment is on fire'," said Father Fucci.As he raced home, a mix of feelings washed over him. For about seven years, he's served as a volunteer chaplain, consoling victims during tragedy."That night, it felt surreal. Almost like an out-of-body experience. Normally I'm the one driving to the scene, thinking about what I can say," said Father Fucci.Instead, he could only watch as flames claimed his home. "Just kept thinking, don't let it spread to any other apartments and thankfully, it didn't," said Father Fucci.Then, something remarkable happened. As word spread of whose apartment it was, some familiar faces began appearing, including five other volunteer chaplains and a battalion chief."They took the time to put a hand on my shoulders. I knew I was blessed," said Father Fucci.Father Fucci found himself the person receiving comfort. "Sometimes those that give, it's hard to receive ... the compassion, love and help. You learn to let go," said Father Fucci.In the end, the apartment was declared a total loss. Amid the ashes, Father Fucci found something that survived."I found a picture of Mom and Dad. Last picture of them. They died a year later," said Father Fucci.He also discovered something else. He calls it a blessing born from his loss: a perspective that will allow him to better help others at the next scene."Now you have a greater understanding of what they need," said Father Fucci.Father Fucci did not have renters insurance. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A mother and son who died in a shooting at a Linda Vista home earlier this week were identified by San Diego police.On Dec. 7, at around 3:15 a.m., officers were called to a home in the 2200 block of Crandall Drive in response to a shooting.Responding officers found a man and a woman inside the home with gunshot wounds to their upper bodies, according to police.The woman, identified as 46-year-old Hue Le, died from her injuries at the hospital.RELATED: Mother dead, son gravely injured in Linda Vista shootingThe injured man, identified as the deceased woman’s 28-year-old son Justin Le, was placed on life support but police said he passed away on Tuesday evening.According to police, Justin Le’s injuries appeared to be self-inflicted.The case is being investigated as an apparent murder-suicide, San Diego police said.No other details on the case were released. 895

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A judge is expected to decide whether to release a sexually violent predator into the Jacumba Hot Springs area.Joseph Bocklett, a convicted repeat sex offender, had a placement hearing Monday morning. Because of COVID-19 restrictions, it was held virtually. ABC 10News wasn’t given permission to record it, but we did monitor what happened inside of the courtroom.The Department of State Hospitals wants to put the 75-year-old Bocklett in a home in Jacumba -- after a Judge denied a proposal to move him into a home in Pauma Valley.Bocklett was convicted of three sexual offenses over a 19-year period involving victims between the ages of 4 and 9, according to the San Diego County District Attorney's Office. He was last sentenced in 2000 to a 17-year prison term and later civilly committed to Coalinga State Hospital to undergo treatment.Though the public wasn’t allowed to physically be inside of he courtroom, they’ve been working to make sure their voices are heard, protesting this recommendation.They have got pages of signatures from residents in the East County. A few of them gathered near the courthouse holding signs expressing their concerns about the possibility of another sex offender being placed in their community.Among that group Melissa Woodall and her daughter. Woodall said rural East County shouldn’t always be the first choice when it comes to placing sexually violent predators.Woodall said, "It’s awful, it really is. There are so many people who have been put into our community who are predators.”The judge says he’ll take a few days to review the letter that were submitted and the testimony that was given before he makes his decision. 1696

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A random act of kindness at a Rancho Bernardo grocery store has a grateful grandma paying it forward. Kathy Yezarski went to the Albertsons at Rancho Bernardo and Poway Roads Friday night to buy milk and cereal for her grandchildren, who were staying at her home. She was about to pay for her groceries when she noticed a problem. “When I got to the checkout I was really embarrassed to see that I didn’t have my wallet,” Yezarski said. Yezarski thought she’d have to leave the items behind and return home when “a very kind young man” noticed her dilemma. “The man behind me very quickly said ‘I’ve got this,’” Yezarski said. Yezarski was mortified she had forgotten her wallet. “It was really touching to me…heartwarming that he would do that for someone.” Yezarski was so moved, she posted about the kind act on the Nextdoor app for her neighborhood. She was hoping the young man would see the post but she wasn’t expecting the reaction she received. “I didn’t realize when I posted until after I posted that two previous posts had been about recent shootings, and I think people were just reeling from that, feeling so upset and I think they needed to hear something positive. A lot of people said that: thank you for restoring my faith in humanity,” Yezarski said. She was inspired to perform a kind act of her own. “Beyond just thanking him, I thought - I’ve got to pay this forward. I went on the website for the San Diego Food Bank and donated. I thought, wow, I can’t just let this stop here, I can’t. I need to do that, he triggered this desire in me to pay this forward.” Yezarski hopes the young man realizes the power of his generosity. “I would want to tell him ‘you’re awesome’, you are just an amazing person and just thank you because you started something that really touched a lot of people,” she said. 1848

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Marine died Saturday night after being hit by a car in the Midway district. San Diego Police say the crash happened around 7 p.m. on the 2700 block of Midway Drive. According to police, the man in his early 20s left a bar in the area when he walked or fell onto Midway Drive before being struck by a car. Police are checking surveillance cameras in the area to identify the driver, who left after the crash. A woman who lives in the area says cars often speed on the road and that there are few places to cross the street.“Like almost a half a mile down, and so if you're gonna cross, you can either walk extra far or you can jaywalk'; a lot of people you do you see jaywalking,” Quinn Dekker told 10News. 736
