ZAGREB, June 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao arrived in the Croatian capital of Zagreb Friday for a state visit to strengthen the comprehensive cooperative partnership between the two nations.     This is the first visit to Croatia by a Chinese head of state since the two countries established diplomatic ties 17 years ago.     In Zagreb, President Hu is expected to meet Croatian leaders to discuss how to enhance bilateral cooperation and exchange views on major regional and global issues of common concern.     The two countries are expected to sign a host of cooperation deals involving various sectors during the visit.     "I believe that President Hu's visit to Croatia will have great impact on consolidating traditional friendship between China and Croatia and deepening all-round and mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries," said Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Li Hui last week. BEIJING, May 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese military authorities pledged Sunday to tighten supervision on senior and middle ranking officers, through strict punishment in cases of breach of duty and regular inspection of their work.     The military will adopt a strict system to investigate and punish senior officers for breaching duty or making mistakes, said a circular issued by the Central Military Commission (CMC) on Sunday.     The document, approved by CMC Chairman Hu Jintao, said it will also introduce a system of accountability by regular inspection on the work of officers at army corps level.     Military units higher than regiment level of the People's Liberation Army must review the work of their commanding officers at least once a year, it added.     Commanding officers from regiment to army corps levels are usually regarded as middle and senior ranking PLA officers.     It will tighten inspection on senior officers to see whether they strictly follow the military disciplines and show loyalty to the Communist Party of China.     The circular called on the officers to keep a communist nature. "In the face of a complicated ideological situation, senior military officers must stick to their faith and keep a firm political stance," it said.     They should devote themselves to building up the country's military capacity to win local wars in the information age, it said.     The document said that the supervision and inspection will focus on any examples of extravagance and waste by military officers.

BEIJING, April 29 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang Wednesday called for improved entry-exit inspection and quarantine of swine flu cases, and accelerating research on a diagnostic reagent to test for the virus.     All government departments must make public health a priority and maintain steady social order, Li said during a visit to the Beijing Capital International Airport and the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Li visited the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention and Capital International Airport in Beijing to inspect the operations of swine flu prevention on April 29.Li said China had no confirmed cases of swine flu, but the virus could still spread to China as the outbreak was worsening in some other countries.     Entry-exit authorities must step up inspection and quarantine by conducting strict medical examinations of people traveling from areas with swine flu cases, and sterilize goods and transport thoroughly, to keep the virus from entering China, he said.     Li also urged disease prevention experts at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention to develop a diagnostic reagent for use in testing for the virus as soon as possible.     An effective surveillance and reporting system was the basis for the prevention of swine flu, so that people suspected to be infected could be "located, reported, quarantined and treated as soon as possible," Li said.     He also urged local authorities to increase production of anti-flu medications, protective gauze masks, sterilization drugs, and respiratory machines, and enhance public education on swine flu.     Officials should closely monitor the global situation, and take prompt and comprehensive measures to deal with the virus in cooperation with the World Health Organization (WHO) and other countries, he said.     Swine flu is suspected of causing the death of 159 people in Mexico. The United States confirmed Wednesday that a 23-month-old child in Texas had died from the virus.
