SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Family grieved the loss of a father, mother and daughter after a raging fire at their Logan Heights home in October.Thursday evening Aunt Rosa Cortes explained how the two surviving children, Wendy, 23, and Angel, 16, were faring. She described areas of Wendy's back and shoulder healing from the burns, saying her skin is getting it's color back.She said her niece and nephew are having a hard time sleeping, saying in Spanish, "every noise, every sound scares them."The fire ignited October 13th, around 4:30 a.m.. Neighbors woke up to screams. Ultimately the father, Jose Antonio Romero Mayo, 44, Daughter Iris, 21, and mother, Nicolasa Mayo-Cortes, 46, died from their injuries.Aunt Rosa said Jose was her favorite brother. She called him her protector.Now she's protecting his two surviving children, saying they can continue staying with her as long as they need.Thursday the family reunited inside Faith on 54th in Oak Park.Cortes said the caskets remained closed and she didn't want to remember them the way they died.Her nephew, Wilber Romero, 26, was arrested on Arson and Homicide charges.She said Wendy and Angel haven't been told about their brother's possible involvement, instead waiting for them to heal before asking questions.Cortes said they need help, psychologically and monetarily to move forward. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Details about a woman’s report of a violent rape were revealed in a downtown San Diego courtroom Wednesday as a resident of a nearby halfway house was charged with the crime. Juan Guzman pleaded not guilty to attacking the woman at 1:40 a.m. December 16 at her home in City Heights. Prosecutors said the victim was sitting on her bedroom floor in front of a mirror when she heard a noise and thought it was her boyfriend. She then saw the reflection of a man she didn’t know, according to attorneys. The man put his finger over his mouth and said “Shh”, the woman reportedly told police. He threatened her with a knife and raped her, prosecutors said. The woman called police, who questioned the man at the halfway house where he lived. Investigators found the woman’s underwear and the knife underneath Guzman’s mattress, prosecutors said. A judge set Guzman’s bail at million, saying he was a danger to the community. Guzman’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for January 3. 1006

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Frustrated business owners are speaking out after a rash of break-ins at local wineries and breweries.Lisa Miller, the co-owner of Koi Zen Cellars in Carmen Mountain Ranch, says her heart sank after she arrived at her winery one morning a few weeks ago."The plant was move to the side and the window was completely shattered. My heart started pounding. I got very anxious," said Miller.Inside, she tasted more anxiety. Police believe the intruder was looking for the cash register, something Miller doesn't have. Instead, the burglar grabbed 40 pieces of consignment jewelry valued at more than ,000."When the detective arrived, he said this has been happening in other wineries and breweries in the area," said Miler.Longship Brewery in Mira Mesa in early April: surveillance video shows a person in a hoodie breaking a window, then crawling through the window. Two days later at the Black Plague Brewery in Oceanside, an intruder wearing a mask and hoodie kicked through a window, slipped in and raced right for the cash drawer, before leaving and driving off in a white Jeep Patriot. Detectives told Miller some 18 breweries and wineries targeted in the past few months. "This makes me really sad, mom-and-pop places put their heart and soul into their business no matter what their business is. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Deputies credited hikers for calling 911, saving a man who had fallen through the ice at Big Laguna Lake Sunday morning. The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department received a call around 11:45 about a man who trapped in the lake after falling through ice. According to the department, the man, who is in his 60s, tried to ski on the ice, but fell in because the ice was too thin. A helicopter was able to quickly descend on the lake, lowering a flotation device down to the man. “He knew he didn’t have much more in him. He knew he had to get out of that water. He didn’t have much time,” Deputy Bill Liniewicz said. RELATED: Man dies on Lincoln Park sidewalk, police sayCal Fire and San Diego Sheriff’s Department all worked together on the rescue. Video from the scene shows a helicopter lowering a rescue device down to the man trapped in the water. Rolling down a gravel road, at the US-Mexico border, a van carried several foreign ambassadors to the US. The group, part of more than 30, came to San Diego for the State Department’s “Experience America Program.” Monday’s stop – a 14-mile stretch of newly constructed primary and secondary border wall just east of Otay Mesa. As the ambassadors approached, work was being done in the hope of finishing the project by January. “Today we’ve been told how you are protecting the US-Mexico border,” said Javlon Vahobov, Uzbekistan Ambassador to the United States.Like the Uzbekistan Ambassador, this is their first time to California.
