SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) in San Diego could be closing as part of an effort to integrate women into the Marines.MCRD has been in San Diego for about 100 years, but it currently does not have facilities specifically for female Marines.According to a Military.com report, Marine Corps officials are looking at other options in order to meet the integration mandate from Congress.One proposal would create a single boot camp that would include the necessary facilities, rather than the current process of dividing recruits between MCRD in San Diego and the boot camp in Parris Island, South Carolina.In response to a possible closure, the San Diego Military Advisory Council said losing the area boot camp would cost the city.SDMAC Executive Director Mark Balmert said, “So 400 recruits a week come through our location here, about 16,000-17,000 a year. Our studies have shown more than 60,000 of their family members make the trip to San Diego to be a part of their recruit graduation.”Marine officials have already told the Pentagon it cannot add women to boot camps without building new facilities. 1139

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The FBI said a bank robber who held up a US Bank in Rolando last week struck again Friday in La Mesa. Surveillance photos show a man entering the Wells Fargo Bank inside the Vons grocery store at 8011 University Ave. in La Mesa just before noon. The man pretended to talk on his phone before demanding money from the teller, agents said. He also threatened “to shoot” if he didn’t receive money, according to the FBI. After approaching the first counter, the man approached several tellers in an effort to get more cash, said investigators. The man spoke to tellers Aug. 15 during the US Bank robbery inside the Vons at 6155 El Cajon Blvd. “Grab a bag. Start with your 100s. Put all the money in the bag and give it to me or I'm gonna [sic] shoot,” the man said, according to agents. A helicopter searched the area near the Wells Fargo Friday afternoon but could not find the man. La Mesa Police said the man is 5’8”, in his mid-20s to early 30s, and has a tattoo of a cross on his forearm. Anyone with information about the robberies was asked to call the FBI. 1088

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Sure, it may not be Torrey Pines, but Liberty Station's Loma Club is considered a great golf course in its own unique way.For beginners, the club is the perfect, reasonably priced way to get on the green. For veterans, a no frills way to work on your game."It's short, it's inexpensive, and it's well kept," Fred Leipold, an avid Loma Club golfer, told 10News.Lauren Gomez first played at the club when she was just a toddler. Now, she tees off with a scholarship to Pepperdine University in her back pocket. "I know a lot of kids come out here to practice. There's not a lot of golf courses around here, so it's really important to Point Loma," Gomez said.More than a century of history sits in the club's soil. At one time, a young Phil Mickelson played tournament at what was then called Sail Ho.Which is why players and locals were shocked to learn the Loma Club put out a notice that it will close in late December.Point Loma residents flooded social media following the news, worried that the same thing could happen in other nearby communities: Golf courses shutting down with plans to fill the land with housing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Drug Enforcement Agency launched a summer project drilling down on factors leading to violent crime across the nation. It is called Project Safeguard.Special Agent in Charge of the San Diego district, John Callery, said, "over 75% of those [violent] crimes are driven to get money to buy drugs."He said drugs and crime go hand in hand. "When a person devolves into a drug addict unfortunately they become very desperate right? And a desperate person will do desperate things to get money and buy drugs."Callery said his team geared up to knock out 15 cases with violent criminals. The arrests happened from August to October."We took a three month, for lack of a better word, a surge. Let’s get violent actors off the street. Let’s arrest them, DEA, and let’s charge them federally." Callery said they arrested 34 criminals.He added they have a lot of evidence to go through as well, "we’ve seized 71 firearms and... seized 160 kilograms of heroin and 160 kilograms of fentanyl."He hopes the arrests lead to hundreds more and reveal kingpins in the Mexican Drug Cartels."We’re a border town and we have a huge responsibility here to try and stop drugs from entering the United States because 75% of all drugs enter right here in our area and go to the rest of the United States." Callery said he is incredibly proud of his teamHe said five agents were infected with the novel coronavirus since March and have recovered. He said they haven't stopped working through the pandemic.Callery said his next big task is National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on October 24th. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The non-profit organization Border Angels hosted its 32nd-anniversary dinner on Saturday. The dinner raises money to help continue providing the services they offer to immigrants in the community, including water drops for border crossers, legal services, and shelter. The migrant caravan and the upcoming election were hot topics of conversation during the dinner. This year the organization honorees were Margarita Zavala, Kirsten Zittlau and Jacqueline Arellano. Zavala and Zittlau are attorneys. Arellano is the water drop coordinator for Border Angels. Border Angels' founder Enrique Morones tells 10News that he decided to honor women this year. He also encouraged everyone to go out and vote on November 6th saying the president is sending the wrong message about immigrants. Guests at the event also reacted to President Donald Trump deploying the military to the border. At a campaign event, the president was not backing down, saying migrants need to come to the U.S. legally.   1051
