BEIJING, Jan. 1 (Xinhua) -- More than 45 million people from both home and abroad have visited Tian'anmen Rostrum, a landmark structure in the heart of Chinese capital, in the past 21 years after it was opened to the public.     "In 2009 alone, the rostrum received more than 2.16 million visitors," said Lin Bingkui, of the rostrum administration department.     The rostrum, or the Gate of Heavenly Peace built in 1417, stands to the north of Tian'anmen Square and south of the renowned Forbidden City, the Chinese imperial palace from the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) to the end of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912).     It was on the Tian'anmen Rostrum where Chairman Mao Zedong formally proclaimed the founding of the People's Republic of China on Oct. 1, 1949.     The rostrum was opened to the public for the first time on Jan.1, 1988.     Thousands of tourists use the rostrum as a background while taking photos every day.

WELLINGTON, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang and New Zealand Prime Minister John Key agreed during a meeting Monday to actively explore new ways to advance cooperation between the two countries. Li said during the meeting that in recent years, China and New Zealand have expanded cooperation in many areas such as politics, economy and culture.     He said they also have kept good communications and coordination on major global and regional issues. The smooth implementation of the China-New Zealand free trade agreement has helped bilateral trade surge, Li said. Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang (R) shakes hands with New Zealand Prime Minister John Key in Wellington, New Zealand, Nov. 2. 2009.    New Zealand was the first developed nation to wrap up WTO entrance talks with China, the first developed country to recognize China as a market economy, and the first developed nation to sign a free trade agreement with China.     The development of China-New Zealand comprehensive cooperative relations suits the fundamental and long-term interests of both countries and is conducive to peace, stability and prosperity in the Asia Pacific region, Li said.     He said respecting and caring for each other's core interests and major concerns are key to a stable development of bilateral ties.     Li said China is willing to work with New Zealand to actively explore mutually beneficial cooperation in sustainable development and cultural exchanges and to enhance coordination in multilateral organizations and on major international and regional issues in a bid to bring bilateral ties to a new level.     Key said New Zealand values its comprehensive cooperative relationship with China. He said the smooth implementation of the bilateral free trade agreement has benefited New Zealand a lot.     The prime minister said he looked forward to visiting China and attending the Shanghai Expo next year. New Zealand has spent five times as much on the Shanghai Expo as on the last Aichi Expo, an evidence of New Zealand's high regard and expectations for relations with China, he said.     The New Zealand government respects China's positions on issues concerning its core interests such as Taiwan, Tibet and Xinjiang, and sticks to the one-China policy, Key said.     Li arrived in New Zealand on Sunday after concluding an official visit to Australia. His three-nation tour will also take him to Papua New Guinea.

BARCELONA, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- The top Chinese negotiator for the United Nations climate change talks being held here said Tuesday that the Kyoto Protocol must be followed.     "China's position is quite clear: the Kyoto Protocol must be adhered to, since it best illustrates the principal of 'common but differentiated' responsibilities," said Su Wei, head of the Chinese delegation to the talks.     Su told Xinhua that during earlier negotiations, some countries had proposed discarding the Kyoto Protocol and adopting a totally new document at December's Copenhagen climate change meeting.     "This demand is strongly rejected by the Group of 77 and China, and other developing countries," Su said.     Su stressed that the Kyoto Protocol must be the legal basis for further negotiations at Copenhagen, and developed countries must fulfill their obligations under the protocol, which regulates that they should clarify their reduction targets in the second phase of the protocol.     "If this basic arrangement is changed, the future of the Copenhagen meeting would be greatly shadowed," Su said.     The deal to be reached at the Copenhagen conference, Su said, should have two basic elements.     One element is to set the mid-term emission reduction targets for developed countries under the Kyoto Protocol. That is, developed countries as a whole should commit to making 25-40 percent cuts below 1990 levels by 2020.     The second element is to make substantial arrangements for the implementation of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in accordance with the Bali Roadmap.     "We hope we could lay a good foundation for the Copenhagen conference through negotiations at this meeting," Su said.

BEIJING, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislator Wu Bangguo has stressed the importance of independent innovation amid the global financial crisis and called on engineering workers to boost research to serve the country's economic development.     Wu, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remark during his visit to the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) on Wednesday.     Every major achievement that China has made could not be realized without technological breakthroughs and innovations contributed by the engineering academicians and experts, Wu said. Wu Bangguo (R, front), chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), inspects the Chinese Academy of Engineering and meets with some academicians in Beijing, capital of China, Nov. 4, 2009China's overall economic development so far this year is better than expectations, thanks to the government stimulus package, which proved to be correct, effective and timely, he said.     To enhance independent innovations is an urgent need for keeping the economy to develop fastly and steadily as the foundation of economic recovery is not solid yet, said Wu.     Wu encouraged CAE's academicians and experts to focus their researches on cutting-edge fields such as low-carbon technology, new energy, bio-medicine, IT, intelligent electricity grid and neo-energy vehicles, to provide technological support to the country's industrial upgrading and cultivation of new economic growth area.     Wu said CAE's more than 700 academicians are "valuable treasure" of the country, urging greater efforts to be made to provide better environment and conditions for their researches.
