(KGTV) -- A local business and organization are coming together to take steps toward better protecting Alzheimer patients by providing free gun locks.Alzheimer’s San Diego and Poway Weapons and Gear have started the first of its kind program regarding what to do when it’s time to lock up your guns.Eugenia Welch is the President of Alzheimer’s San Diego and spoke to 10News. "As we were working further through this program, there was an incident locally, a gentleman shot his daughter because he didn’t recognize her as a daughter he thought she was an intruder. Luckily she’s fine but that could have been a really bad situation," she said. When families are helping their loved ones who have been diagnosed, they often forget about the guns in the home and how dangerous they could be. "If someone is retired military or retired police officer, they’ve probably had guns in their home their whole life and didn’t even think about it” Welch says.This program gives free gun locks to families. It started over the summer and so far they have given out 100 locks.Poway Weapons and Gear has donated 500 locks and tells 10News they will continue to donate as need grows.The program hits close to home for the business because the owner’s grandmother was also diagnosed with the disease.With the locks on guns they become completely unusable, preventing the cylinder from going back in with the rounds to allow the gun to be fired.While the ideal situation is for the guns to be completely removed, the organization says this is the next best option. 1610

President Donald Trump and Democrat Joe Biden will have their microphones cut off in Thursday’s debate while their rival delivers their opening two-minute answer to each of the debate topics.The 90-minute debate is divided into six 15-minute segments, with each candidate granted two minutes to deliver uninterrupted remarks before proceeding to an open debate. The open discussion portion of the debate will not feature a mute button, but interruptions by either candidate will count toward their time in the second and final debate Thursday.The nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debates announced the rule changes Monday, three weeks after a chaotic opening faceoff between the two presidential contenders that featured frequent interruptions — most by Trump.The commission has faced pressure from the Trump campaign to avoid changing the rules, while Biden’s team was hoping for a more ordered debate. POWAY, Calif. (KGTV) — Poway developer Kevin McNamara is hoping to convince residents to support a new plan to add 160 homes to the property which was formerly the Stoneridge Country Club. The golf course was closed after a previous development plan was defeated by voters in 2017.McNamara calls his development "The Farms at Stoneridge." It has an agricultural theme, including hiking trails, parks, community gardens, a butterfly farm, and an amphitheater for public performances.The property is owned by real estate mogul Michael Schlesinger. His 2017 campaign to replace a portion of the golf course with condos was rejected by Poway voters. Schlesinger shut down the course the next morning.McNamara tells 10News he has negotiated an option to buy the land from Schlesinger, dependent on his ability to get city and voter approval on the new plan. He says it is important for a local developer to take over the property. "I've been involved in almost everything that's gone on in this city for 20-plus years. I like to think I can be trusted," McNamara said.Some residents have held out hope the City of Poway would take over the land to re-open the golf course. However, McNamara says the city has no interest, as projections suggest an annual 0,000 loss. Other residents want the land to remain undeveloped open space, but McNamara says the fire department would consider that to be a fire hazard."It's a hard choice for a lot of people and I understand that. But I'm their best option. I'm the best option they're ever going to have," he said.McNamara is hosting a public forum Wednesday night from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Painted Rock Elementary. He will submit his final plan to the city by the end of December. McNamara anticipates that 2019 will be spent working on the environmental impact study, followed by a city council vote in the spring of 2020.
