SAN DIEGO (KGTV)--If you've ever seen a traditional Danza Azteca performance, you know it's much more than a show."We always explain to people that these are ceremonial prayers and that we're sharing them not to entertain people although that's part of it because people love seeing it but also to teach the history of the dancing and to teach there's something to learn from everybody," said Mario Aguilar, the Capitan General or leader of Danza Mexi'cayotl.The group is celebrating it's 40th anniversary this year, which makes it the longest running of it's kind in the country.Aguilar says the dancing is just a part of what they offer members."We use the name circle because we consider ourselves, everybody in the circle as family members, we have some people who've been dancing 40 years," he explained.The colorful and elaborate dances are really stories, telling of the ancient indigenous heritage that members are keeping alive.Aguilar says they're also trying to spread a message of unity."We're reminding people that we're all one people we dress differently we talk differently but we all come and go from the same place and that to me is the greatest gift of Azteca Dance." 1194

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- The family of Crystal Odom filled a San Diego courtroom Monday morning to hear a judge sentence the man convicted of killing Odom in a drive-by shooting in 1995. The judge sentenced Aswad Walker to 15 years to life for Odom's murder, plus three years for gang ties. He was convicted of second-degree murder back in February for Odom's death. Two previous trials had ended in hung juries. Odom's parents spoke before the sentencing. Her mother called Walker a coward and told him he would get what he deserved in prison. When Odom's father, James Odom, spoke, the family became very emotional, tears and sobs could be heard throughout the courtroom. Odom said a burden was lifted off his shoulders and that the sentencing marked an end to a long ordeal. At the time of the shooting, Crystal was with her then boyfriend and her 10-month-old daughter. Her daughter and boyfriend were unhurt. 959

San Diego (KGTV)- As Westin Hotel workers fight for better wages, local business owners are fighting to keep business.Hotel workers have been on strike for the past few weeks. Business owners say customers are now avoiding the area and its costing them money.Joey Aiello owns a shoe shine stand that sits outside of The Westin Hotel. He says he’s seen fewer customers this month because of the strike. “People don’t think its a big business but it supports my family,” says Aiello.He says since the workers hit the picket line, he’s lost 00 in business. “The first week they were here I made less than 0 a day. We have to make 0 a day to stay a float.” Other business also say they are concerned about the noise.The San Diego Police Department says they have received six complaints since October 9th. A spokesperson with Marriott International sent us this statement that says in part:“We are disappointed with some of the tactics the union has deployed including the noise levels. We continue to work with local police to address these issues and we are grateful to our guests for their patience during this time.”The Unite Here Union President, Bridgette Browning, says employees are now in negotiations with the hotel. She also sent us a statement that says:“While we are sympathetic to neighboring businesses - we believe the Marriott has the power to fix this strike and the businesses should be demanding that Marriott do the right thing. The workers are not to blame for the low standards that Marriott has created at the Westin San Diego Gaslamp. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Health officials in San Diego are warning people to avoid water contact at all coastal beaches and bays amid rain sweeping through Southern California. The San Diego County Department of Environmental Health issued the general rain advisory Thursday afternoon. According to the department, the urban runoff caused by the rain can cause bacteria levels to spike significantly in ocean and bay water, especially near storm drains, creeks, rivers and lagoon outlets. RELATED: Check today's forecastThe runoff could contain bacteria from animal waste, soil and decomposing vegetation. The department says water contact such as swimming, surfing and diving should be avoided during rain and for 72 hours after the rain stops. A beach closure will also remain in place for the shoreline of Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge and Border Field State Park due to sewage-contaminated flows from the Tijuana River. The water contact closure includes all beaches from the south end of Seacoast Drive to the international border. 1058
