SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A patient at a North Park dental office got upset after she got hit with surprise fee.Two Thursdays ago, Linda Morrow - donning a mask and gloves - went to Pristine Dental Group for a root canal and bone grafting. After the procedure, Morrow, who doesn't have dental insurance, paid cash for the bill. It was in line with the estimate."The total bill was 0. I didn't have change, so I gave them 0 because I only had bills," said Morrow.Morrow says when no one in the office could make change, the receptionist spoke up."She commented, 'Oh, PPE.'" said Morrow.Morrow says her new bill was for 0 dollars, including a charge for personal protective equipment used by the dental staff."That shut my mouth. I was stunned," said Morrow.Confused, Morrow paid the full amount and left."My concept was that it was definitely an afterthought. If I had exactly 0 or my debit card, I would not have had to pay the charge," said Morrow.Morrow posted details of the charge of the Nextdoor app. Quickly, several neighbors responded that they also have paid similar charges at their dentist offices, ranging from to . In an email sent out to patients one of the dentists attributed it to the "inflated cost of PPE.""If I had to buy my own personal protective equipment for me and my family, they should have to buy it for themselves," said Morrow.Morrow points out no other businesses has charged her for their PPE. On its website, the California Dental Association cautions dental offices who apply the fee to charge the same amount of everyone. As for Morrow's bill, her dentist calls it an oversight, saying the fee should have been added to the estimate, because everyone is charged the same fee. The owner of Pristine Dental says all patients with an email on file are sent an explanation of the new fee before the appointment. Morrow says she get email updates but says she never received such an email. Some insurers do cover the PPE fee. 1981

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A pursuit sparked an officer-involved shooting in Imperial Beach late Saturday night. According to police, officers tried to pull over a Ford F-150 that was reported stolen around 10:30 p.m. Saturday on the 1900 block of Dairy Mart Road. Police say the driver didn’t stop, instead driving into a cul-de-sac, making a u-turn and driving toward officers. “Believing his partner was going to be run over, one officer fired his service weapon to defend the other officer,” police said in a news release. At some point during the pursuit, the suspect threw a handgun out of the truck. RELATED: One shot, killed at Linda Vista recreation centerThe suspect eventually stopped on the 1200 block of Holly Avenue in Imperial Beach and ran away from the scene with a female passenger. The woman has since been located while police continue to search for the suspect. Homicide detectives have been called to investigate due to an officer firing his weapon, police say. It’s unclear whether or not the suspect was hit. Police say the officer who fired at the suspect is a three-year veteran of the department. No officers were injured. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new technology platform launched this week is making it easier for restaurants, hotels, and caterers to donate food to those facing hunger in San Diego County. The new platform, MealConnect, was unveiled by Feeding San Diego. CEO Vince Hall says the free platform will help rescue the more than 14 million pounds of food going into San Diego landfills every year. "This is an issue that is compelling, it is serious, and it is urgent because hunger is debilitating," said Hall. Restaurants and food service providers use the MealConnect app to submit a food donation. It's then picked up by a volunteer and delivered to a nearby charity. Nancy Kane is one of the first San Diego volunteers to take part in the program. "It's flexible, it's not that hard to do, I can do it on my own time. I love it; it's one more thing I can do to make a difference," said Kane.Volunteers receive training and equipment to ensure food is delivered safely. They can choose their delivery hours and can accept or decline requests via text message. MealConnect enables food donors of all sizes, such as hotels, meeting and event planners, restaurants, farmers market vendors, and convenience stores to post surplus food to the system.Feeding San Diego received a ,500 grant from the Walmart Foundation to support the launch of MealConnect in San Diego County. In partnership with Feeding America, MealConnect is available in seven other markets across the United States. 1482
