SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - President Trump's call for some teachers to be armed is sparking local debate.Linda bought her first handgun three years ago for personal protection. She's a local music teacher at elementary, middle and high schools who applauds the President's idea. "It's a good idea because we're going against violence people doing violent things. I can't protect all 30 of my students with pencils, erasers and rulers," said Linda.RELATED: Trump pushing to 'finally do something' on gunsEric Heins, President of the California Teachers Association, is in town for the state Democratic convention and says schools should not be a war zone. "To try and militarize a student campus by introducing more guns is insane. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Officials with the San Diego Padres announced Friday that pitcher Luis Perdomo received a a five-game suspension for his role in Wednesday’s bench-clearing brawl during a game against the Colorado Rockies.The scrum began in the bottom of the third inning when Padres starting pitcher Luis Perdomo threw a 96-mph pitch that nearly hit Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado in the back.Arenado threw down his helmet and bat and charged Perdomo, who countered by throwing his glove at the batter. As Perdomo backed up to avoid an Arenado punch, players and coaches from both sides stormed the field in an attempt to break up the fight.RELATED: Base-brawl: Benches clear in Padres-Rockies game“Arenado has received a five-game suspension for charging the mound and then fighting.  Rockies outfielder Gerardo Parra has received a four-game suspension for fighting during the incident,” the team said in a statement. "Padres pitcher Buddy Baumann has received a one-game suspension for fighting during the incident.  Perdomo, Arenado, Parra and Baumann all received undisclosed fines in addition to their suspensions.,” Padres team officials said.Padres catcher A.J. Ellis, infielder Freddy Galvis and Rockies pitcher German Márquez were also fined for their actions during the altercation.The brawl likely stems from Tuesday night when Padres outfielder Manuel Margot was hit in the ribs in the 9th inning. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are searching for the driver who struck a pedestrian with his vehicle before driving away in Hillcrest early Sunday morning. According to police, a 30-year-old man was crossing the street on the 1300 block of University when he was hit. Following the crash, the sedan fled the scene. LAUSD and SDUSD join numerous other school systems taking similar measures as the number of COVID-19 cases continue to rise.Superintendent Austin Beutner of Los Angeles and Superintendent Cindy Marten of San Diego have issued the following joint statement: “California has now entered a critical new phase in the fight to stop the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic,” they said. “There is evidence the virus is already present in the communities we serve, and our efforts now must be aimed at preventing its spread. We believe closing the state’s two largest school districts will make an important contribution to this effort. For that reason, we plan to close, effective Monday, March 16. “Later today, we will be providing students, parents and staff with more information on our plans to continue providing learning opportunities for students during the closure. We have also directed staff at both districts to prepare to continue providing nutrition and other supports through family resource facilities.” The boards of Los Angeles Unified and San Diego Unified School Districts have unanimously approved this action. San Diego Unified plans to reopen schools on April 6th, unless conditions call for an extension. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are searching for a suspect after a man was shot during a road rage incident in Del Cerro early Sunday morning.According to police, the shooting happened on the 5200 block of Adobe Falls Road at 1 a.m. Sunday.Police say the 57-year-old victim was crossing the street to meet a friend when he was nearly struck by a white, four-door sedan.RELATED: Man continues watching UFC fight after stabbing friend in the Midway DistrictThe victim “exchanged words” with the driver of the vehicle before the man got out of the car and the two fought.The victim was knocked unconscious before a passerby took him to the hospital.
